Protect your identity; thieves are hiding everywhereTimes sure are changing. It wasn’t

too long ago that shredders werethings found only in offices to

destroy confidential documents, socialsecurity numbers were commonlyused as identification numbers andpeople didn’t think twice aboutthrowing things like canceled checksin the trash.

Today things are different, personalshredders are a common householdappliance, the Social Security Numberis no longer used as a “public” identifi-cation number and most people nowthink twice about just tossing canceled

checks and other confidential infor-mation in the trash.

The reason for these changes is thatidentity theft is the fastest growingwhite collar crime in the nation.

Being a computer technician, I amconsulted by people and businesses

on how to protect personal and privateinformation. At the start of theseconsultations we go through a ques-tion and answer period where I try toassess where the risks are (what kindsof information are at risk, how thatinformation is stored and how thatinformation may be vulnerable) andthe more I do this, the more I seecertain patterns immerge.

First, there seems to be a miscon-ception that identity theft is primarilya financial issue. I find that manypeople are surprised to learn that youcan have your identity stolen andnever have it show up on your creditreport or even have the event berelated to a bank account or creditcard.

If your identity is stolen it could beused to get medical treatment in yourname and next thing you know it yourmedical records are now corruptedwith someone else’s blood type andmedical history – a bad situation thatyour credit monitoring service won’tnecessarily catch. Or perhaps anidentity thief might use your goodname as an alias while committing acrime. Again a credit monitoringservice won’t alert you when thishappens; you are likely to find outabout it when the police show up atyour door with a warrant because theguy using your name never showed upin court.

A second misconception that I run

into over and over is what I call the“locking the barn after the horse hasbeen stolen” syndrome; people tend toget lulled into a false sense of securityonce they start enacting good habitslike securing their computers, shred-ding personal information andactively taking steps to protect theiridentities. Now, don’t get me wrong, these are definitely some good habitspeople must get into but even if yourcomputer and your information islocked up tight, keep in mind yourinformation is already “out there in theworld.”

As we go through life and do com-mon things like apply for loans, medical insurance, drivers licensesand such, we are invariably giving outthat same information that we areprotecting at home. The question youneed to ask yourself is “how manycompanies out there already have myinformation” and “are these compa-nies taking the same steps to safe-guard my information as I am?” Inmost cases yes but unfortunately inmany cases that answer is no; justabout every week we can hear on thenews about some organization thathas a computer stolen or somehowloses a bunch of people’s information.Sometimes millions of identities arecompromised.

Another misconception is, "What

VERO BEACH — The clinking ofmetal in a restaurant usually meanssomeone has dropped the silverware, but last week in Vero Beach, the noisewas coming from a very different sort ofutensil set.

In honor of World Wide Knit in PublicDay, members of the community gath-ered at the Panera Bread in Vero Beachto knit craft projects for local charitiesand cancer patients.

The Knit Sisters of Vero Beach hostedthe knitting in public event, but it wasby no means their first time working onprojects in public, said Vicki Carlton, group member.

This time the knitting group washighlighting the American Cancer Soci-ety and the local chapter was on handpromoting the fall 2014 Making StridesAgainst Breast Cancer event.

Funds raised through the MakingStrides walk provide for free resourcesand support to women newly diag-nosed with breast cancer, allows foraccess to mammograms and helpscover some costs of researching pre-vention, treatment and cures for breastcancer.

“We are registering teams now,” saidTheresa Woodson, community engage-ment representative for the AmericanCancer Society.

The knitting group formed in 2008and has created countless scarves, hats,

purses, blankets, animals and otherknitted objects for cancer patients andother charities over the years, Ms. Carl-ton said.

The group meets weekly on Tuesdaysand Thursdays at Panera Bread at 3p.m. and on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. inthe Indian River Mall food court.

“It’s grown from two women meetingtogether, to maybe up to 50 peopleknitting during season. You never knowwho is going to be there, there are someregulars and some people that justcome once or twice a year,” Ms. Carltonsaid.

Men are certainly welcome to jointhe group, but at this time the group isall made up of women, she said.

Like many clubs and groups, there isa certain social aspect that draws peo-ple into the organization, but the desireto use their skills to benefit others isalso a common bonding element.

The items the group members createare things that cancer patients, usuallyadults, would find useful or comfort-ing. When the projects are completedthey are turned into the local AmericanCancer Society chapter for distribution.

“We try to make a variety of things sothe American Cancer Society has a vari-ety to choose from. We like to makethem out of comfortable materials, such as cotton or bamboo, because weknow that many people are very sensi-tive. Especially for hats, when peoplelose their hair, their scalps are muchmore sensitive than if they shaved their

head or went bald,” Ms. Carlton said. Many of the women knit but some of

them also crochet items to donate, Ms.Carlton said.

“I learned how to knit from one of thefounders of the group about six yearsago, but I had been crocheting for 49years. I personally like to knit a lot bet-ter and I picked it up pretty fast,” shesaid.

Some of the group members havehad cancer or are in remission from thedisease, which also strengthens the tiesthe knitting group has to the cancercommunity.

“It’s a great support group and group

of friends. You have people that younever would have met or becomefriends with if not for this. Some of thewomen have even traveled to Alaskatogether,” Ms. Carlton said.

Teaching others to knit is anotheraspect of their group, so beginners arewelcome to stop by one of their meet-ings during the week and see what it’sall about, she said.

does it matter if someone steals myidentity? It's not like I'm rich oranything so they aren't going to getanything from me."

But the cold reality is that we are allvulnerable and even though it mayonly take an identity thief a minute tosteal someone's identity, it can takeyears for the victim to get it restored.

OK, so, it's a problem that we allface. The question now is, what can wedo about it? How do I protect myselfonline?

Dogs! Why do dog owners think that it’s

so darn cute to take an animal intothe supermarket? I don’t care if it’stiny and fits in your bag. It’s a darndog that can use the bathroom at anymoment!

Unattended kidsI’ve taken the time to visit some

local parks. Some have fountains andsplash pads and some just have slidesand swings... but you know what theyall have in common? Unattendedkids. Please, parents, a slide is not ababysitter. Do a better job.

Help the wounded warriorsEach day, as I watch television and

see commercials about the WoundedWarrior Program, my blood just boils.Am I the only one who feels this way?

Here are men and women, who

fought for this nation, who have lostlimbs and/or suffer from Post-Trau-matic Stress Disorder, who have todepend on a civilian organizationand donations of citizens to supportthese individuals. Not one pennycomes from our government. Why?

Almost all the news reports tell ushow our government is squanderingmillions of dollars on pork barrel pro-grams, which in many cases aren'tworth a hill of beans. These pork bar-rel dollars could go to our woundedwarriors.

Additionally, we have a foreign aidprogram, wherein we give money tocountries that hate us.

A number of these countries get-ting military foreign aid use theseweapons to kill their own people andstart civil wars.

And here is the worst part of foreignaid – none of these countries receiv-ing American foreign aid has liftedthe country out of poverty.

Why don’t we have DOMESTIC AIDto help the homeless and our veter-ans? Why don’t we have DOMESTICAID for the children who go to bedhungry? Why don’t we have DOMES-TIC AID to help the elderly? Why don’twe have DOMESTIC AID to providetraining to everyone who needs it, sowe can improve the lives of everyone? Why don’t we have DOMESTIC AID toeducate the people in the projectsand clean up the projects? Whyshouldn’t we have DOMESTIC AID?Doesn’t Charity begin at home?

At this moment, we have the worstCongress, whose members are onlyconcerned with retaining their power, their existence and their reelection. These politicians have made govern-ment their vocation. They are notstatesmen/women. They are onlyconcerned with their careers, theirsurvival and their bank accounts. This is why we need term limits.

If you want to help, write to yourrepresentatives and senators. Tellthem what’s on your mind. If theiractions do not support what is bestfor the survival and future of thisnation, then don’t support them intheir bid to be reelected.

How many?I’m wondering how many youth

have to be murdered before someoneactually does something. So you’vegot extra money to help with enforc-ing the laws? Does anyone reallythink that’s going to help? There areno jobs, no laws enforced and noth-ing for any of the kids to do. This is adead end town.

Murder vs. killing? What is the difference between

murder and kill? Either way, someonedies!

That to me is the sadness in myheart. The sickness in the heart tomurder or kill to gain is the greatestsadness that exists in God's heart andmany like me. What do you gain?

Why is this spreading more andmore all throughout the world? Every

day, we find better ways to murder orkill mankind, and yes, even animals!Dogs, cats and other kinds of animals(are) abused and killed and exploitedfor the gain of money. How sad, howvery sad that we have done this to all.

Hit the ‘closed caption’ button

I cannot understand why, when yougo to all types of medical facilities, the TV sets are always on.

However, none of them have theclosed captioning on. The rooms arelarge, and the TVs cannot be heard.

The majority of patients are of theage where hearing is a problem. Afterall, the technology to close captionthe shows was put there for a reason.

BusinessMake healthy skin a lifestyle, practicing safe sun

VERO BEACH — The largest organin the human body is the one that getsburned, bumped, bruised, weather-beaten and abused, and it shouldn’tbe taken for granted.

The skin is the outer barrier pro-tecting the rest of your body from thedangers of the outside world anddeserves special care, the kind of carethat comes from a professional der-matologist.

Dr. Larry Landsman of the AestheticDermatology Center of Vero Beachhas more than 20 years of experience, and truly cares about the health of hispatients.

His office provides the communitywith a wide array of dermatologicaltreatments for promoting and main-taining healthy skin.

Some dermatologists use physicianextenders, such as nurse practition-ers, to perform procedures. Butpatients of Dr. Landsman can be reas-sured that all procedures, such asbiopsies, skin-cancer surgeries or anycosmetic procedures, are only doneby the doctor.

“Putting the patient first is impor-

tant to us,” Dr. Landsman said.“Patients are treated as individualsand receive quality care. We’re able tosee people in a timely manner and ifthey have an unexpected emergencycome up, we work hard to fit them in.”

Skin cancer is the most commonform of human cancer and in generalthe most curable if caught in the earlystages.

Dr. Landsman specializes in skincancer screening and the treatment ofskin cancer.

He also includes cosmetic and gen-eral dermatology in his practice, which makes his patient demographicquite diverse. Cosmetic dermatologytreatments include Botox, fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal andlaser skin treatments.

“I’m able to treat patients’ needsthroughout their lifespan, from infan-cy to the golden years,” he said. “Inone day, I can see a teenager withacne and low self-esteem and helptheir skin clear up, which helps themfeel better about themselves, thenhelp a middle-aged person look theirbest by recommending a skin careregimen or Botox or filler treatment ifappropriate and the patient desires it,and finally, find melanoma in its early

stages on an elderly person and save alife.”

Dr. Landsman recommendspatients have a full body exam regard-less of the reason for the visit. It’s alsorecommended people see a dermatol-ogist once a year for a full body exam.

“Things can look suspicious to mebefore causing any symptomsbecause of my experience,” he said.

Outside of visiting a dermatologist, people can promote their own skincare on a day-to-day basis.

Practicing “safe sun” by applyingsunscreen with SPF 30 and zinc oxideas an active ingredient every two tothree hours is a good way to start.

Playing tennis is one of Dr. Lands-man’s favorite pastimes and in addi-tion to sunscreen, he recommendswearing sun protective clothing, widebrimmed hats and sunglasses duringoutdoor activities.

“I practice what I preach,” Dr.Landsman said.

He recommends that people exam-ine themselves on a regular basis andget to know the moles and othergrowths on their bodies, as self-examscan have a positive long term effecton overall health.

“If anything is changing, see a der-

matologist as soon as possible,” hesaid. “I look forward to being yourdermatologist.”

Mr. Nunemaker said while the prop-erty includes some occupied residen-tial homes, there are also several aban-doned buildings and overgrownfoliage that allow for coverage for ille-gal activity such as prostitution, drugsand illegal dumping.

Over the past 10 years, the city hasworked with the county to try andresolve some of the issues, but it seemsthe issues aren’t getting any better andthe city is in a better position toimprove the area, Mr. Nunemaker said.

“This is a last resort option. We can’tabide the current situation anylonger,” Mr. Nunemaker said.

“We’ve been working with residentsof Hall Carter James, an adjacentneighborhood, to improve the area butthe Lincoln Park area has stymiedimprovement,” he said.

The area in question is also far out-side the county’s urban service area, which makes it difficult for the countyto address service issues, issues thecity would be able to address just aswell, Mr. Nunemaker said.

“To bring this property into the citywe could provide all the municipalservices, including code enforcementand water services, which is goodbecause water quality is an issue withthe illegal dumping and exotic vegeta-tion out there,” he said.

One thing the city could do is pro-vide a water line to the parcel so resi-dents could tie into the public watersystem instead of using wells and sep-tic systems.

“We could remove the vegetation inthe right-of-ways so people aroundcould see what is going on and thatmight deter some of the drugs andprostitution,” Mr. Nunemaker said.

The county commissioners fullysupported Mr. Nunemaker’s requestand now the next step is for the countyattorney, Dylan Reingold, to work withFellsmere to prepare an agreementand a notification process for theproperty owners and homeowners tohave opportunity for questions and tovoice any concerns.

business plan and a proposal to useMichael Field.

During the June 17 meeting, Her-itage Park organizers Jason Red-mond and Coogie Friedman, pre-sented their case for Michael Field tobe kept open for children not only toplay baseball, but to have all pur-pose fields where football and soc-cer teams could play.

“The problem right now is there’snot a lot of places for them to play, and that’s why we are here,” Mr. Red-mond said.

Mr. Redmond said he was appre-ciative of the council giving themtwo weeks to put a mission state-ment together and show insurancecould be obtained, but asked thecouncil to consider Heritage Park, oranother group to lease the parkinstead of going with the “easyoption” of Indian River Sports Com-plex.

Members of the public said theyweren’t against Indian River SportsComplex, just that the city shouldthink outside of baseball when itcomes to city recreational parks andto keep Michael Field open for allsports activities.

City Manager Jim O’Connor rec-ommended the council move for-ward with the lease agreement withIndian River Sports Complex andsaid the lease allowed him to

accomplish two goals the councilput before him, to reduce costs andkeep baseball in Vero Beach.

Mr. O’Connor said Bob Summersbaseball field will continue to beopen for people that want to throwaround a baseball, fields at LeisureSquare are available for people thatwant open access to play soccer orother ball sports and Riverside Parkalso has open spaces.

When it came time to vote, MayorDick Winger said although he heardthe emotional appeal from the pub-lic and Heritage Park supporters, thecity needed to be concerned withhaving a stable organization takingover the property and needed tohear more of a business plan.

“We have to be fiscally responsi-ble,” Mayor Winger said.

“What I would like to know is howsome group is going to make itwork,” he said.

The council voted 5-0 to lease thefields to Indian River Sports Com-plex.

George Young, organizer for Indi-an River Sports Complex, said thereare more than 500 children playingbaseball through the Cal Ripken andBabe Ruth baseball organization.

Mr. Young said he has no problemworking with other organizationswho may want to use Michael Field.

FORT PIERCE — The Harbor BranchOceanographic Institute Foundationboard of directors recently announcedits decision to award a $559,295 grant toFAU Harbor Branch to fund the pur-chase and operation of threeLand/Ocean Biogeochemical Observa-tory units to be deployed in the IndianRiver Lagoon in St. Lucie and IndianRiver counties.

A LOBO is a sophisticated and proven

water monitoring system which pro-vides high quality, long term reliabledata. These new sites will complementadditional LOBOs that were recentlydeployed by St. Johns River Water Man-agement District in the central andnorth Indian River Lagoon.

The likely locations of the HBOIF-funded LOBOs will be in Indian RiverCounty - Vero Beach, downstream of theNorth, Main and South Relive Canals, and near Sebastian River and SebastianInlet; and in St. Lucie County - near Tay-lor Creek and Fort Pierce Inlet to dove-

tail existing and planned IRL water qual-ity monitoring efforts.

The Indian River Lagoon is a unique, highly diverse, shallow-water estuary ofnational significance stretching along 40percent of Florida’s east coast, with anestimated economic impact of morethan $3.5 billion per year. FAU HarborBranch initiated the Indian RiverLagoon Observatory in 2011 to be aleader in fulfilling the need for a strongestuarine observing and prediction net-work in the Indian River Lagoon, todetermine the risks and opportunitiesassociation with environmental change.Urbanization, excessive freshwaterreleases, degradation of water quality, contaminant loading, loss of habitat(e.g., sea grasses, mangroves), decline offisheries, and emerging diseases inmarine mammals are increasinglyimportant issues in the IRL, as they arethroughout the world’s estuaries andcoastal waters.

The HBOIF Board also announcedadditional three-year funding at anannual level of $874,950 designed forinternal capacity building for HarborBranch.

HBOIF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organi-zation under the Internal Revenue Ser-vice, and a Direct-Support Organization(DSO) of Florida Atlantic Universitybenefitting Harbor Branch Oceano-graphic Institute. The DSO designationallows HBOIF to affiliate with the Flori-da Atlantic University Foundation,

through which all private support dol-lars are administered. This arrangementallows HBOIF to benefit from the busi-ness operations of a larger foundation.

HBOIF is also the named recipient ofthe revenue generated from the fourHarbor Branch specialty license platesowned by more than 140,000 Floridaresidents. The Harbor Branch specialtyplates - Protect Wild Dolphins, ProtectFlorida Whales, Save Our Seas, andAquaculture - are among Florida’s mostpopular, providing nearly $3 million forHarbor Branch Oceanographic Instituteresearch annually.

VERO BEACH — An author with aheart for animals and a love for VeroBeach will back in town for a booksigning event at an independent bookstore.

The Vero Beach Book Center in VeroBeach will host an author conversationand book signing with New York Timesbestselling author Mary Alice Monroeon July 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The event will feature Ms. Monroe’slatest book, “The Summer Wind,” thesecond installment in the LowcountrySummer Trilogy.

“I’m thrilled to be coming back toVero Beach Book Center to promotemy new book. It’s one of my favoritehometown stores and I never miss it,”Ms. Monroe said in an interview.

The book series is set in Sullivan’sIsland, S.C., and revolves around thelives of three estranged half-sistersstaying at their grandmother’s historicoceanfront home during the summer.Woven into the fabric of the primarystory is the plight of an Atlantic bot-tlenose dolphin, adding Ms. Monroe’s

signature environmental issue to thenovel.

“I believe in the power of story,” Ms.Monroe said.

“I can make readers aware of issuesin our landscape and affect change.Once people feel something about anissue, they make a connection with itand they will act on their own, I know ithappens,” she said.

In previous novels, Ms. Monroe hascalled attention to a variety of conser-vation issues including loggerheadturtles, birds of prey and monarch but-terflies, a press release said.

She was inspired to go ahead andinclude a dolphin in her new seriesafter hearing some sad statistics aboutthe health of wild dolphins.

“I always knew I wanted to one daywrite a novel about the dolphin. Every-one loves that beguiling smile,” Ms.Monroe said in a press release.

“But the impetus for me I think towrite this series now is the hard factthat 48 percent to 52 percent of thewild dolphins in South Carolina andFlorida are sick. It’s an alarming situa-tion,” she said.

As a sentinel species, sick dolphins

can be key indicators of health con-cerns that could eventually affecthumans, Ms. Monroe said in an inter-view.

VERO BEACH — For years, Chef Lin’shas been a place to go to for affordablean dinner that will delight the entirefamily.

No matter what you eat, prefer orcrave, the bountiful buffet has some-thing for everyone, whether it is steak, crab legs or sushi.

Chef Xiang Gan Lin, the owner andhead chef, is the artist behind morethan 200 dishes for dinners to choosefrom.

I have been going to Chef Lin’s foryears, each time making sure that I trysomething new and making sure that Ihit all my favorites like the coconutshrimp, shrimp tempura rolls and crabrangoon.

To have an all you can eat sushi buf-fet is hard to find, let alone afford. Hav-ing the variety and ability to chooseany sushi that I want and a rib-eye cutduring dinner is unheard of.

But, not at Chef Lin’s... You can evenhave the sushi chef create your favoriteroll, pick and choose your own stir fryand have a scoop of ice cream to finishoff your night.

Lisa Lueg is the manager of ChefLin’s and the bright and shining facethat you see when you walk in.

She quickly led us to sit at our table,

though almost as quickly, brought usto the buffet.

She explained all of the foods, fromthe cold bar, the sushi station, the dimsum area and the desserts.

I started with my usual, getting por-tions of the Peking duck, crab rangoon, coconut shrimp and a few sushi rolls.

The coconut shrimp is sautéed andcoated in a creamy coconut sauce.

The Peking duck is tender and roast-ed to perfection.

On my second trip I tried the bour-bon chicken, which had an excellentflavor.

I also sampled one of the dim sums, eating a meat filled noodle selection.

I had another one after that.My companion is a lover of General

Tso chicken, which he ate a generousportion of, and also had a rib-eyesteak, cooked to order.

I finished my night with the almondcookies, a piece of coffee cake and aChinese doughnut.

They also have several flavors of icecream, including a pistachio andchocolate.

Mr. Lin’s goal since opening has beento keep the prices affordable.

He does not skimp on the quality offood or on the service to customers. Hebelieves in top quality across theboard.

The service itself is excellent. The

staff, all employees since the restau-rant’s opening, is quick and attentive, refilling drinks and clearing plates.

Ms. Lueng and Mr. Lin said that therestaurant would not be as successfulas it is without the devoted customersthat have kept them busy through atough economy.

“We really want to thank everyonewho has come in and eaten with us,”

Ms. Lueng said. As a long time customer, I have

always appreciated the happy smilesand excellent food I have come toexpect from Chef Lin’s.

As usual, I left full, happy andamazed at the low total on my bill.

Chef Lin’s is located at 1850 US 1,VeroBeach, 32960. For more informationand hours, call (772) 778-6989.

with the Ocean Research ConservationAssociation based out of Fort Pierce.

Ms. Monroe not only talks aboutconservation and environmental con-cerns in her novels, but lives out herlife in a manner consistent with herpassion. She serves on the board of theSouth Carolina Aquarium, theLeatherback Trust and Charleston Vol-unteers for Literacy.

She holds an active permit as a seaturtle volunteer and fully believes ingetting hands-on experience with anyenvironmental issues before she everputs them in a book.

One facility that helped her writeabout the Atlantic bottlenose dolphinwas the Dolphin Research Center inGrassy Key.

The nonprofit has a natural seawaterlagoon where the dolphins live andinteract, Ms. Monroe said.

According to the nonprofit’s website, the majority of the dolphins at the cen-ter were born there or came from facil-ities where they lived under humancare and are not considered wild.

The illness of the wild dolphins iswhat got Ms. Monroe’s attention and awild dolphin is a part of the novel, butthe bigger picture of “The SummerWind” is definitely the relationshipsbetween the people and the dolphinhelps that story be told, Ms. Monroe

said.“After I finish my research, I can

include my authentic experience withthe dolphins. I can’t make up anythingas good as what actually happens.

“Once I actually start the novel, it’sall about the people, the humanaspect. I can hardly wait to go back andfinish writing the last book in theseries, ‘The Summer’s End,’” Ms. Mon-roe said.

Sharing memories of Dodgertown With summer officially here, I

tend to turn some of myattention to baseball. There was

a time when baseball filled my child-hood. I was a huge baseball fan andwhen Spring Training came around I wasin heaven.

In my teens I discovered that I couldcombine my two loves, baseball and golf. Thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers andthe wonderful complex known asDodgertown in Vero Beach, I could rollinto town with my sticks and my mittand kill two birds with one stone.

By arriving early enough I could get in

nine holes at Dodgertown Golf Courseand then catch the afternoon gamebetween the Dodgers and another club. Ihad to arrive early though, as they wouldclose the course for parking a few hoursbefore the ball game.

In 1948, Branch Rickey and co-owner,

Walter O’Malley, moved the Dodgers'spring training operations from Pen-sacola to a disused 80-acre naval trainingbase in Vero Beach. During World War II,the base served as a training facility fordive-bomber pilots learning to fly nightmissions. On the same property wherepilots practiced strafing and bombing, the duo brought nearly 600 players tochase fly balls, run bases, swat mosqui-toes and stay somewhat sober duringtheir lonely evenings.

With the South still rampant withracial prejudice, many of the blackplayers would travel to Fort Pierce ontheir free time to find public courseswhere they could enjoy a round of golf.In 1953, O’Malley had designed, withinput from players and coaches, a pitchand putt golf course around a man-made lake on the property.

Because space was limited and therewere only a few holes, O’Malley decidedin 1965 to build and maintain his owncourse, adjacent to Holman Stadium. Hehired a pair of minority coaches, JimGilliam, a former Dodger player andPreston Gomez to design the track.

The nine-hole course opened in 1965and was available to all the Dodgerplayers as well as the public. Being anavid golfer, O’Malley could often befound on the links.

With the course being right on theDodgertown property, players could befound there pretty much any time theyweren’t playing baseball. On a given day

you could find Jackie Robinson, DukeSnider, Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, RoyCampanella, Vin Scully or many moreHall of Famers enjoying a round.

Maury Wills learned the game of golfhere. Being an African-American meantthat many places weren’t open to himand his fellow players. He found solaceon the course and learned the game.

Sadly the end came in 2004 when theDodgers were sold. The new ownershipfound that today’s players weren’tinterested in playing the quaint course, regardless of its history, and shut thedoors.

Soon after, the team picked up its bats, balls and mitts and moved its operationto Arizona. The Dodgers had spent 61years in Vero Beach. The team, its playersand fans were not just a part of the city’shistory; they were part of the city itself.

I don’t happen by the old Dodgertowncomplex often, but when I do, seeing thevacant plot of land where DodgertownGolf Course used to be makes me sad.

I think about all the great players whowalked those grounds. I think of howdifficult it must have been for thoseAfrican-American ballplayers to findthings to do in those days, and howwonderful it was that O’Malley builtsomething for ALL of his players to enjoy.

James Stammer has been an avid golferand golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. Hecan be contacted [email protected].
