We did it. That was one great
show we put on. I want to thank
each and every one of you that
helped make it the success that it
was. In particular, I want to thank Sharon Duncan
for her work. Getting all the dealers lined up is not
an easy task. Each of them has to be interviewed
to discover what they are bringing, where they will
best fit and even those that come year after year
need to confirm that the vehicle they are bringing
is the same length so that it still fits in their favorite
spot, how many are coming, their names (for name
tags), whether the goods they are bringing would
fit better inside than out, is there room for them,
do they need to be put farther out because they
now have to run a generator. Security needs to be
arranged, arrangements for trash to be emptied at
the end of each day (Von Achens), port-a-potties
ordered, last minute cancellations/additions, a list
for those on standby to get into the show/hall. The
enormity of keeping all these people happy and
coming back year after year is time consuming.
The contract letters to send out, the welcome
letters/packets to arrange, interfacing with the
school, asking for contributions for the Treasure
Chest, lining up Demonstrators, and this year she
added the BBQ to her list of duties. No easy task
finding one that was familiar with the site and
comfortable in putting out a quality meal for a very
good price. Making sure there were enough tables
and chairs outside for Thursday night dinner and
Saturday’s BBQ. Once all this is arranged, she was
still handling all the pesky little problems that pop
up all weekend long and running a B&B for the
needy. All of this and more handled with a smile for
everyone and looking good to boot! In a nutshell, it
could not have been done without her and I thank
her from the bottom of my heart.
The Thursday night Pizza Party was delicious again,
including the salad that Jeanne and Jan beef up with
extra goodies each time. Thank you both for taking
care of treating all who come to sell and all those
who make it possible for them to do so!
Hospitality rocked (Yea!!! Sally and crew), the
Treasure Chest (Wayne) was great, the Children’s
Booth (Bill Brown) was rocking and cracking all
weekend long, and the pie booth sold out (Yeah
Cocos).
From signs up, cases cleaned and hauled (Stan
Ferguson), equipment hauled and set out, electrical
& sound (Wes & crew), then take it all down and
put it away for next year. For all of this and more, I
am humbled and I thank you. And God Bless our
strong young helpers!!!
I will ask for a Nominating Chairperson and
Committee for next year’s Officers during our
September meeting. I want all of you to consider
running for Office and filling in on Committees for
the next President. If this Club is to continue, there
needs to be participation from as many of us that

can manage it. Every job has a mentor that has
worked it before who will be happy to enlighten and
help you take on a new task. I invite you all to
spread your wings and try something new!
A chance flyer left on a table in the OASIS Meeting
Room led to the program for our August Meeting. I
had asked Russ McGlenn to design a talk that
covered his Dinosaur Dig in South Dakota and the
type of rocks that could be found around the site; a
little something for our fossil lovers and a little for
our Rockhounds. I enjoyed the talk and was
particularly impressed by the fact that he did not sell
the bones that were found. Those were left for the
Rancher to keep or sell. His sole motivation for the
organized digs was his passion to dig and teach
others how to dig properly and with care. I was very
impressed by the generosity of spirit this shows. I
must admit, while I cannot say I was surprised, I was
disappointed in the lack of exciting rocks to be found
in the area. I was holding out a tiny hope there
might have been a little more bling! Oh well.
Our September Board meeting is on the 4th.
Highway cleanup is on September 15th. Our General
meeting is on September 11th and I am looking
forward to Wes’ show wrap! The Display is Show
Treasures or anything and pie is on the menu
provided by The Azevados, Jan Ferguson, Margaret
Henson and Wayne Mills.

Paul Dominic Berthelot III
1947—2018
Sadly we announce the passing of Paul Berthelot.
Paul and his wife Sandy joined the Orcutt Mineral
Society in 1998 and were very active in OMS, it’s
activites and the annual Rainbow of Gem show.
Paul contributed numerous poems and stories to
the Ore-Cutts. Paul and Sandy were married for 43
years when she passed in 2017. Paul missed Sandy
so very much after her passing and it is a comfort
that they are together again.
Graveside services for Paul will be Saturday,
September 8, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the new Santa
Maria Cemetery. Paul will be buried next to his
beloved Sandy.
Do not mourn or think that I am forever gone,
I am not far away.
I am the voice in the summer wind and
The stillness of a snowfall on winter eve;
I am the candle’s light on a magic night,
I am the laughter in the rain drops and
The sunshine smile of a sunny day.
No, do not mourn of think that I am forever gone,
My love and I are with you always.

Ol’ Jack By Paul Berthelot
Reprinted from April 2013 Ore-Cutts
AFMS 2014 7th Place Award in Adult Poetry
You’ve heard the story of Sweet Betsy from Pike
How she an’ her husband took a long hike,
Well, what about the rockiest rockhound
with a pick and rock sack,
Have you heard of the rascal who’s called Ol’ Jack?
Now nobody knows where Jack called home
And far as he cared it might as well be Nome, Ya’see,
he wuz a feller who liked to wander an’ roam
Lookin’ for a rock pile where he could
“hunker down like a gnome”.
Yessir, Ol’ Jack liked his rocks
an’ he knew them all by rote
An’ his “secrets” he logged in a handbook of notes
He was a quick minded ol’ poke
who spoke in riddles an’ rings
An’ if he didn’t know somethin’,
why he’d just make up th’ whole thing!
Now, th’ stories he told wuz chock full of bull
and a bit o’ wild lace
An’ whenever he told ‘em his eyes’d start twinklin’ in
his grizzly ol’ face;
“Once” says he “I smelt a rock just north
of this ol’ dirt road
An’ t’git there I had to ketch an’ ride
a wrinkled old granddaddy toad!”
Yessir, Ol’ Jack wuz a character, a right crazy ol’ coot
{An’ it ain't only owls who can holler ‘n’ hoot},
A western picture o’ th’ Pied Piper
he wuz in his ‘duds an’ his frills’
An’, y’know, those silly ol’ rocks
plumb foller’d him all over th’ hills.
Once I went rocking with him
to see if his blarney wuz a tad full
An’ I never see’d such a curious sight afore
that I laughed like a bull,
‘Cause there stood Ol’ Jack
with a funny look on his mangy ol’ face
With his scrawny ol’ body jigglin’ and twitchin’
at a furious pace!
Well, now that I think on it I got to admit,
though reluctant I confess
Ol’ Jack wuz a gen’ine article;
Yessir, the best in the west,
An’ Sweet Betsy,
why, she wuz nothin’ compared to Ol’ Jack
Th’ rockiest rockhound I know’d with a pick an’
baggy rock sack.
How to Make Edible Geodes
Geodes can be stunning jaw dropping
rocks when cracked open, but did
you know that it is possible to
make edible geode-looking candy?
This looks like a fun and easy treat to
make and show-off. It’s not a quick project with a
two day wait for the crystals to form, but each step
seems fairly simple in itself. This looks like
something fun to do with an older kid, but definitely
any age child or adult would enjoy getting to admire
and eat the “geode”. There are written instructions
http://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/rock-
candy-geodes-recipe/ and a short information

The Day I Discovered the Giant’s
Marbles By Paul Berthelot
Originally printed December 2009 Ore-Cutts
It happened while I was on holiday in New Zealand;
~ rather ~ on a “working sabbatical”. The wife was
shopping at some of Moeraki’s more trendy
Shoppe’s and I was taking advantage of her absence
~ although I certainly would notice the repercussions
of her excursion at a later date.
As I had some free time, and the wife otherwise was
occupied, I hired a guide for an afternoon hike along
some of the country’s more rugged countryside. I
must note that anybody who knows me realizes how
“rugged” I actually am and no doubt would find such
a euphemism hilarious. Be that as it may, my guide
and I set out to see what would turn up.
We were walking along New Zealand’s Otago
coastline when I observed some large round objects
in the distance. As we drew near and I could more
clearly see what I had glimpsed earlier I thought I
was dreaming, or at least had lost what little
common sense I had left. “Look!” I said to my guide.
“Middle Earth really existed. Don’t you see the
giant’s marbles? Mr Tolkien was spot on.”
Laughing quietly my guide assured me giants
weren't found in New Zealand and he told me the
objects weren’t “marbles”, they were boulders. Since
he was a Scotsman “born & bred” I’ve no doubt he
found me a “wee bit daft”, but, at least, he wasn’t
rude enough to say so.
“Well, if they aren’t giant’s marbles, what are they?”
I tried humoring him as I was certain he wouldn’t
recognize a giant’s marble if he fell over one or was
hit on the head with it. Scotsmen are so sensible…
My guide began by telling me the “marbles” were
much older than one would think possible. “Laddie,”
he said in his gentle burr, “these stone boulders are
verrrry old. Aye, they’re much older than your giants.
And since they weigh several tons & some measure
up to three metres in diameter, it would take a
prodigious giant to lift them.”
A cloud of doubt crossed my mind but I managed to
keep my mouth from rambling. “Oh,” I muttered
quietly. Obviously my guide was too practical to
even believe in giants. To deny that giants existed
was to court a fate worse than death or so I’d been
told when a youngster.
My guide continued his geology lesson, he said these
were New Zealand’s Moeraki Boulders which had
been sketched by Mr Mantell in 1848 when they
were more numerous than today. What’s more, he
said, scientists determined they were formed during
the Paleocene some 60-65 million years ago on an
ancient seabed. Calcium and carbonates crystallized

in a process similar to a pearl and the boulders could
have taken as long as four million years to form. The
mudstones simply weathered out of that seabed
along this stretch of the New Zealand coast
beginning about 15 million years ago.
Needless to say I was impressed at my guide’s
knowledge. But, I also thought he probably was
making it up. After all, my wife constantly made up
stories to explain her obsession with sparklies. I’d
seen the havoc an obsession could cause first hand...
knowledge confirmed by my readings in the
“Antiquarian’s Olde Philosophie.” Why couldn’t my
guide do the same? Seemed logical to me.
“One final point”, my guide said. “You're not
completely wrong about the Moeraki’s connection
with folklore. The Maori believe the boulders are the
remains of calabashes, kumaras and eel baskets that
washed ashore after the Araiteuru, a legendary
canoe, wrecked at Shag Point.”
Hmmmm,” I thought out loud. “Seems like they’re
giant’s marbles after all. Didn’t the Maori’s live there
around the same time?”

Show. The Rock Splitter was a great success at the Gem
Show. Wayne Mills took it to John Von Achen, who
sharpened the blades and it was good to go. We went
through 80 pounds of geodes.
NRA stapled a sign for their upcoming event onto our
Gem Show sign. Elaine Von Achen saw this happen, took
it down and gave it to Sylvia..
The show was well received with only a few incidents.
Everyone likes the food and was pretty happy.
Comments about the geode smashing, the food truck,
Wayne’s maps and kiosk, the treasure chest were all
positive. All the people who helped us, Nick, the janitor,
