Solar Artworks: Sustaining CreativityNacho Zamora, Director, Solar Artworks ProjectSolar artworks are a new type of public art which make use of solar power technologies. They combine art, architecture, design, science, and a common objective: how to make our lives more sustainable. Solar artworks can be found around the world, and their creators generally are multidisci-plinary groups of specialists. During the month of October, over 30 solar artworks will be displayed throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region as part of the Fall In...Art and Sol Festival. This will be the first major exhibition of solar art in the world. At our October monthly meeting, the exhibition curator, Nacho Zamora, and other solar art designers will discuss how these works apply and encourage innovation, interaction, beauty, and an ecological message.

When Asia Was the World Stewart Gordon, Ph.D., Senior Research Scholar, Center for South Asian Studies, University of Michigan While European civilization stagnated during the “Dark Ages,” Asia flourished with an amazing wealth of science, philosophy, and religion. Linked together by a web of spiritual, commercial, and intellectual connections, the distant regions of Asia’s vast civilization, from Arabia to China, hummed with trade, international diplomacy, and the exchange of ideas. During our meeting, Stewart Gordon will take an interesting look at Asia from 500 to 1500 AD. Gordon is the author of When Asia Was the World, which examines this period of Asian history through the use of actual memoirs from people who lived, worked and traveled there. This monthly meeting will serve as the open-ing keynote for a four-session OLLI class offered during the winter semester. Each of the class sessions will be led by an SVSU scholar and feature a different book which is part of the Muslim Journeys bookshelf. SVSU has received grant funding for this speaker and the winter reading and discussion series from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

Writing Your Life (152)We live and experience the world through our own eyes, heart, and mind. No two chapters are the same. Whether it’s one small episode, or a lifetime of memories, personal writing is a great way to recall, reflect, and share. Les Miserables: From Hugo to Hugh (153)One of the world’s greatest pieces of litera-ture came from the pen of French author, Victor Hugo. Since 1862, Les Miserables has mesmerized readers throughout the world and led to innumerable film versions of the story. Its latest tribute came in the form of a musical version penned by two French music/song writers in the ‘80s whose mas-terpiece was then adopted by British writers for presentation in theaters around the world. Barb Mitchell, OLLI member and French teacher, will attempt to draw together this great work’s many incarnations, including Hugo’s original French version, its English translation, films, and, of course, the latest incarnation with Hugh Jackman playing the role of Valjean.Mondays: November 11, 18, 25, December 2 & 9 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $32 Members; $64 Non-Members Room: C129

An “Inkling” of the Truth? (155)J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams had more in common than being Oxford professors, excellent writers, and personal friends. They were prominent members of a literary discussion group called “The Inklings” where members discussed works in progress and the ideas that shaped them. An ongoing discussion was the ques-tion of “true myth.” Is there a universal human unconscious truth that explains the similarity of myths from various cultures? Although they approached it in differ-ent ways, several members of the Inklings believed that the “true myth” was the story of Jesus Christ. Join SVSU professor Judith Thompson on this global treasure hunt as we search for clues. Familiarity with the works of the above mentioned authors is not required. Be warned, any truth you find will be strictly our own.Tuesdays: September 17, 24, October 1 & 8 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C140

Mindfulness Meditation (156)Mindfulness meditation helps us learn to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based medita-tion have documented reduction of physi-cal and emotional distress and increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Nan holds a Master’s Degree in Theology with an emphasis in spirituality. The class maximum is 16.Fridays: September 20, 27, October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1 & 8 • 10 - 11:45 a.m.Price: $159 Members; $189 Non-Members Room: C140

History & Philosophy of God (157)Two things are generally true in the world of religion: 1) most people are religious and 2) most people know very little about religions outside their own faith system. Professor Charles Kimball from the University of Oklahoma will be our expert source (Teach-ing Company) as we explore the fascinating subject of “Comparative Religion.” We will review the many similarities in religious teachings as well as the core variances in the world’s five major sacred communities: Juda-ism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Bud-dhism. We will compare how each addresses issues such as the Sacred, the Holy, religious leaders, holy texts, sacred space, objects, people, etc. With the rapid globalization of society, our object will be a better apprecia-tion of world cultures and especially that of the United States, which is the most diverse religious country in the world. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.Thursdays: October 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 • 9:30 a.m. - NoonPrice: $32 Members; $64 Non-Members Room: C129

Our discussions will center on Jenefer Robinson’s book Deeper Than Reason: Emotion and its Role in Literature, Music, and Art. Centering Prayer: Introductory Workshop (159)Centering Prayer is a simple method in which we open ourselves to God and consent to God’s presence and action within us. This prepares our hearts and minds to receive the gift of contemplation. It is a way of paying attention to the Divine Indwelling Spirit who resides at the center of our being. It also helps us to develop a deeper relationship with the Divine. Nan Spence is uniquely quali-fied to teach Centering Prayer as she holds a master’s degree in counseling and theology and works as a psychotherapist and spiritual counselor in Saginaw. She studied Centering Prayer with Thomas Keating, a Cistercian monk who designed this form of prayer.Saturday: November 9 • 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.Price: $39 Members; $69 Non-Members Room: C129 Exploring Buddhism (160)This class will include an overview of the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha who was born in the sixth century in what is now Nepal. Rediscovering Grover Cleveland (161)Grover Cleveland was a strong-willed man who did not flinch at challenges to his principles and policies. Providence or luck, depending on one’s beliefs, may have con-tributed to his extraordinary political ascent. As a mayor, then governor, and finally as president, he mastered his office with single-minded determination, dedication to duty, and absolute integrity. A man of solid Chris-tian faith, honesty, courage, common sense, and ability, many feel that Grover Cleveland

deserves to be remembered as one of the best American presidents. This class will be led by Northwood University professor John Pafford.Tuesdays: September 17, 24, October 1 & 8 10 a.m. - NoonPrice: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Experiencing Rome: A Visual Exploration of Antiquity’s Greatest Empire (163)The ancient Roman world, which lasted more than 1,000 years, spanned three continents at its height. Dr. Stephen Tuck, a professor of classics and the history of art at Miami University, is the lecturer in the Great Courses DVD’s used in this class. OLLI member Barb Mitchell, who holds an MA from OSU in Classical Languages, will be your facilitator and will supplement the series with other DVD’s on ancient Rome. The Saginaw County Fair (165)East Saginaw held its first fair in 1866 and Saginaw City held its first fair in 1873. No fairs were held after 1896 until Riverside Park offered one in 1912. The Saginaw County Agricultural Society’s four-day fair in 1914 eventually became an impres-sive eight-day fair. In fact, during its heyday, the eight-day fair was the largest county fair in America, east of the Rockies.

Declining attendance almost brought the fair to its end around the turn of the century. The Fair has experienced a rebirth since mov-ing to Chesaning in 2002 and downsizing it to a four-day event. Local author Roselynn Ederer will discuss the Saginaw Fairs held since the 1800s and her recent Saginaw Fair anniversary book, A Family Fun Affair.Thursdays: October 10, 17 & 24 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129

The Intelligence Community (170)The intelligence community is the subject of movies, books and television programs. Cloaked in romantic mystery, it operates in shadows we will never comprehend and with a budget that is entirely secret. We depend on it daily to provide information to our government and to keep us safe. We expect it to know the most arcane motives of terrorist organizations we have never heard of and governments we don’t trust. But what do we really know about the intel-ligence community? In this course we’ll examine how is it organized, who the agents and other personnel really are, and how they are selected, trained and assigned. We will also consider what is reasonable to expect from this agency and what is not. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct politi-cal science professor and attorney.Fridays: October 25, November 1 & 8 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C224

This policy has been approved by the advisory board. We hope this will reduce the amount of time OLLI staff spends processing cancellations, and contacting members on waiting lists.

Policy for Classes: $10 cancellation fee. The remainder of the registration fee will be refunded or remain as a credit on your account. The cancella-tion must be done by one week prior to the first class or no refund will be given.

Policy for Day Trips: $10 cancella-tion fee. If your spot is filled from the wait list, the remainder of the registra-tion fee will be refunded. If your spot isn’t filled, and you cancel less than one month prior to the trip your registra-tion fee will be forfeited.
