Our PTFA meetings are being held on Thursday 5th July in school starting at 8.00 pm (all welcome) and Friday 6th July in school at 9.00 am (children welcome). If you would like to

understand more about what our PTFA actually do and how important the PTFA team are to our school then please come along and get involved.

We have had a mountain of lost property pile up over the last few

weeks. Please help to save time for your child, their class teacher

and also parents by ensuring that school belongings such as

coats/jackets, uniform, PE kits, PE bags, book bags, sun hats,

water bottles, packed lunch boxes, water bottles, etc. are all

clearly named (with the child’s forename and surname). We can

only hold onto lost property items for a short time so if you think

you may have lost something please call in to the office and take a look promptly to avoid

disappointment.

Nursery –

We have had such an active time in Nursery this half term! We have been comparing and playing with balls of all shapes and sizes, we have practised lots of different ways to move about and we have had some lovely times up on the top field and using the trim trail! We have also learned the importance of a good night’s sleep and we loved coming to school in our pyjamas, though all the adults did find this made it hard for us to feel as lively as usual! We have looked at a variety of fruit and we have used it to make patterns, fruit kebabs and fruit

salad- yummy! We have had our very own royal wedding with bridesmaids, flag wavers and confetti throwers. Our final week will see us being Superheroes, imagining what it would be like to have all kinds of super powers-we will be designing our own superhero outfits and creating a super power drink that will enable us to go on a super flight all together up on the top field. An exciting end to an exciting topic!

Reception – Our Reception children have had lots of fun writing wishes to the fairy godmother telling her the fairy tale character they wish to be for a day. Children then came to school dressed as their favourite fairy tale character…

Children from Reception have also had the opportunity to attend the Fundamentals Festival this year held at the Derbyshire Tennis Centre. Children had the opportunity to try a number of different activities including cycling, tennis, dance and core strength activities which included planking and balancing.

This term Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying our Pirate and Seaside topic. We have looked at different famous pirates. The children were surprised to find out there were both female and male pirate captains. We then looked at the Spanish Armada in detail. The children found out about the different people involved. They all loved Queen Elizabeth but were shocked to find out that Drake was an actual pirate and was not always heroic. We spent a few weeks making a class Spanish Galleon before setting fire to them to recreate Drake’s fire ships. The children particularly enjoyed acting out the Spanish Armada using water pistols, powder paint and water balloons.

We have been continuing with our ‘Scrummdiddlyumptious’ topic this half term. We have looked at where food groups come from and have located the countries on a map. We have designed and made our own smoothies, made bread and written evaluations - all of them were delicious! After being inspired by our trip to Cadbury World, we have designed our own chocolate bar, complete with its own packaging, ingredients, nutritional information and slogan! Next half term we become Urban Pioneers!

5

Years 5 & 6 have been exploring the human circulatory system this half term, particularly focusing on the function of the heart. As part of this, our pupils had the opportunity to get hands on this week, dissecting a sheep or pig heart, which really helped to make the concepts less abstract and more real!

May also saw the Year 6 children sit their KS2 tests (SATs), and the Year 5 & 6 staff were very impressed with their mature attitude and hard work in the run up to, and during the test week.

Next half term we will have a Latin American vibe, as we explore all things Mexican!

‘Road to Russia’ Challenge

Advice from the government suggests that all children and young people should engage in

moderate to vigorous physically activity for at least 60 minutes per day.

In an attempt to help meet this target, we have introduced our ‘Road to Russia’ activity

challenge. Children are participating in a variety of daily physical activities, such as running

a mile, doing aerobics dances, dancing to times tables, or competing in orienteering

challenges connected to curriculum areas. In return for these activities, classes earn

kilometres, in an attempt to make the 3000km road trip to Moscow, in time for the World Cup

2018. At the time of writing, we have made it across the channel to Calais!

Orienteering

Thirty children from Walter Evans

attended the Derby City SSP Primary

Orienteering Festival on Darley Park at the

end of April. Children were separated into

three teams and undertook an orienteering

challenge; scavenger hunt; and alphabet

challenge. Out of the 17 teams that took

part, a group from Walter Evans, led by

Mrs Smith, scored the highest points on

the day. Well done everyone and thank

you for being so beautifully behaved.

During week commencing 14th May children from year 4 went to Moorways to take part in a football festival. The children played against other schools and won most of their games. All the children played really well and had an enjoyable afternoon. Well done for representing our school so excellently!

On 18th May the football team played away at St Werburgh's School in their last game of the league. We have had a talented and hard working team this year who narrowly missed out going forward to the cup final. Well done to everyone who has taken part and to all the parents/grandparents for their support and for providing lifts to our away games.

Kwik Cricket Competiton

The Year 5/6 kwik cricket team displayed some

excellent cricketing skills at the Derby City Kwik

Cricket competition on Monday 21st May. They

played two games, winning one and narrowly

losing the second match.

One of Tina Turner’s classics has the title:

“What’s Love Got To Do With It!”

The Bible talks a lot about love. Some verses that are often used at weddings and on other occasions are these from I Corinthians 13 (from The Message Bible): Love never gives up Love cares more for others than for self Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have Love doesn’t strut Does not have a swelled head Does nor force itself on others Is not always me first Does not fly off the handle Love does not keep the score of the sins of others Does not revel when others grovel Love takes pleasure in the flowering of truth Love puts up with everything Always looks for the best Never looks back But keeps going until the end Love never dies “Trust steadily,

Hope unswervingly, love extravagantly”

Love has a lot to do with our journey through life Sandra Hinds – School Chaplain/ 07833 646687
