This year the Hobe Sound Christmas Parade falls on December 7th, known as “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” and we’re taking this opportunity to honor well-known Martin County native, Pearl Harbor Survivor and environmentalist, Ross Witham. Representing Ross Witham as Grand Marshal for the 34th Annual Parade is his wife, Mabel Witham. Ross Witham, a Pearl Harbor sur- vivor and disabled veteran, passed away in 2004. Before his death he received international recognition and honors for his innovative efforts to restore the green sea turtle along Florida’s shores. His wife, Mabel, who is this year’s Parade Grand Marshal, is known for opening the first preschool in Martin County in an old school building in Port Salerno. Today’s preschool and exceptional child pro- grams can be traced back to Mabel Witham’s work. She was a member of the Blasko family of Palm City and became a schoolteacher. In 1917 Ross Witham was born into an old Martin County family. He joined the Navy to see the world. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he was a chief petty officer overseeing a squadron of PBY flying boats. His brother, Homer, was a PBY pilot who was killed in the Aleutian Islands. Homer was Stuart’s first navy pilot to die in World War II. Witham Field in Stuart is named for Homer Witham. Ross and Mabel were married on May 27, 1945 at First Congregational Church in Palm City. They had four children. One day as Ross was walking on the beach, he freed a newly hatched sea turtle that was trapped in seaweed on shore. It became a turning point for Witham and marine turtle conservation. He began the study of turtles, earning a doctorate in marine biology from California Coast University and, with the help of Salt Water Conservation agent Roland C. “Boots” Byrd and museum director Stephen Schmidt, he started a sea turtle rescue program that brought eggs from endangered nests to the House of Refuge Museum for protection until they could hatch and grow large enough to survive in the sea. The transplanting of sea turtle eggs proved to be such a success that it was copied around the state and in the Caribbean islands. Known as the Head Start for Turtles Program it was officially sponsored by the state. Ross Witham authored 27 scientific articles on turtles and lectured at universities around the country and in Central and South America. The 16th Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Conservation and Biology hon- ored Ross Witham in 1996 at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Marine biolo- gists from 27 countries participated in the one-of-a- kind award. Almost unnoticed, even in Martin County, Ross Witham’s wife, Mabel, was quietly working on behalf of children. She began the Open Door Pre-School in Port Salerno. Preschool education was a new idea in Martin County and she endeavored to help young- sters, particularly those from less advantaged families. The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce, its Board of Directors, Staff and Members, are proud to welcome Mabel Witham to serve as Grand Marshal of the 34th Annual Christmas Parade! As 2019 approaches its sunset and 2020 is close on the horizon, I reflect on the events of the past few months and look to a future that will continue to fulfill the promises of membership in the Hobe Sound Chamber.

The 7th Annual Progressive Dinner was a major success. The evening began at the prestigious Loblolly Golf Club for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as attendees dressed in their finery mingled and had fun with the new “scratch off ” raffle where every ticket was a win-ner. The silent auction caused excitement as players outbid each other to try to win certificates for 5 local golf courses.

Our celebrity chefs all provided fabulous meals in the comfort of their homes to delighted guests. And the evening ended with dessert, a nightcap and great dance music at Flash Beach Grille. It was a truly enjoyable evening with exceptional “Chamber of Commerce weather!”

This fall we partnered with our “sister” city, Tequesta and held an informational gathering at new member, joscō bar and oven. We were able to present the benefits of Hobe Sound Chamber membership to many busi-nesses represented at the event and have had several new Tequesta entrepreneurs become part of our Chamber.

Looking ahead, we will again be hosting a food truck event. With a few changes we believe it will be a great attraction for the whole community. It will take place on the 4th Friday of each month now through April 2020. The new venue will be J.V. Reed Park with more trucks, room for the kids to run and have fun, plenty

of space for guests to set up chairs or blankets and enjoy the tasty treats avail-able for purchase. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss the fun.

The 34th Annual Hobe Sound Christmas Parade will step off this year on December 7th at 1:00pm. December 7th is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Grand Marshal for 2019 will be Mrs. Mabel Witham. Her husband was Ross Witham, a Pearl Harbor Survivor. We have added a new trophy this year for the entry that is the most Patriotic.

In a few weeks, December 20th, at a luncheon at Mariner Sands Country Club, we will be installing our 2020 Board of Directors. I am looking forward to a great year ahead with the Chamber staff and volun-teers and a very dynamic Board of Directors.

I want to personally congratulate our Chamber members who have been chosen by the Business Development Board of Martin County “for their extraordinary contributions to Martin County’s econ-omy and quality of community.” Business of the Year is Board member Bob Thornton of O’Donnell Impact Windows and Storm Protection; Entrepreneur of the Year, Scott Fay, TCI-Rood; and Small Business of the Year, Joe Connelly, Recovery Insurance Adjusters.

Keep watching News You Can Use and www.hobe-sound.org for updates on upcoming events in the Chamber and our community.

You know the feeling --- your head is congested and your face hurts. You press on your cheeks or temples and there’s pain—the pain that can only come from an inflammation in your sinuses. And then—there’s a headache that usually accompanies the sinus with runny nose, watery or itchy eyes and sometimes sneezing. Let’s face it, you feel miserable and sometimes you just want to go to bed!

Sometimes the symptoms of a migraine and a sinus headache can be confused, however sensitivity to light and sound and nausea generally accompany migraines.

Symptoms of a sinus headache may include: • Pressure and pain in the areas of the forehead, eyes

and cheeks or light headedness • Nasal congestion and stuffiness • A yellowish, green or clear discharge from the nose • Extreme tiredness • Chills and fever • Swelling and tenderness in the face Natural remedies that may alleviate some of these

symptoms include using a nasal saline (salt) rinse or spray, breathing moist air to help drain nasal passages as well as using peppermint oil and carrier oil combination rubbed on your temples. Avoid cigarette smoke and drink plenty of water.

Many of my patients ask for a facial adjustment when

they have sinus problems. The adjustment to the facial bones does not hurt and helps improve sinus drainage thus relieving the pressure. Often the result can be instanta-neous. I also highly rec-ommend acupuncture in combination with chiro-practic. These therapies are safe and natural alter-natives to prescription and over the counter medications that may leave you feeling fuzzy-headed and tired, or that may pro-duce additional side effects that only address symptoms, rather than the cause of the discomfort.

When sinus pain is troubling you, try natural health care as your first choice.

Yours in Good Health, Dr. Leon Gonyo D.C., F.I.A.M.A. of Stuart Family Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center. Located at 6096 SE. Federal Hwy, Stuart, FL 34997. For more information, please call 772-781-0193 or visit the website: www.EmergencyChiroCare.com.

Fellow Chamber of Commerce Members and Hobe Sound residents:

My name is Sam Bruning. I am honored to serve as the chairman of the chamber’s ambassador com-mittee. We are a group of friendly and outgoing pro-fessionals with a mission to enhance the chamber experience with existing and new members. We are the volunteers that help the chamber events run smoothly, the smiling faces at ribbon cuttings, and the folks that reach out when members sign up with this wonderful organization.

In the coming months, we will hold a Coffee Talk sponsored by Linda and Eric Wolf at ActiveCanvas. This event will allow you to come meet the ambassa-dors, learn more about our team, and potentially join our group.

We understand the ambassador committee may not be for everyone, but we want to remind you we are here to serve the community. If you would like our help marketing your business we offer our Welcome Bag program. For ten dollars, businesses can put an item in the Welcome Bags, sponsored by Dr. Leon & Shelly Gonyo at Stuart Family Chiropractic. These bags are hand delivered to new businesses by our ambassadors or picked up by new residents at the chamber office. If you are interested. please contact me ([email protected]) or Jan Otten ([email protected]) to learn more.

On September 21st, the ambassador committee and chamber leadership participated in the International Coastal Cleanup. Our group volun-teered to clean up Greenfield Park in Hobe Sound. The ambassadors had a great time serving the com-munity and strengthening friendships within our team. After our cleanup, fifteen hungry women and men stormed Harry & the Native's for great food and a fun atmosphere. We look forward to helping Hobe Sound maintain its beauty and elegance.

Please keep a watchful eye on our group. We have talented individuals that want to continue improving your chamber experience in every way possible.

Canadian philosopher, Jean Vanier reminds us, “One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to wel-come and help people in a way we couldn’t as individu-als.” Our ambassador group demonstrates the ultimate power of teamwork when serving our community.

Thank you for the time you spent learning more about our group. We look forward to serv-ing you in 2020.

Warmest regards, Sam Bruning Ambassador Committee - Chair
