UNITED STATES AIR FORCEDEVELOPMENTAL ENGINEER

What are Developmental Engineers for the USAF?• 62Es lead the technical development of science and technology for the USAF. This process spans basic research of scientific principles, applied technology demonstrations, development of prototypes, final design, test & evaluation, operational support, and sustainment engineering. What kind of work you actually do will depend on if you are placed in research, test, an acquisition program, intelligence, logistics support, etc. Also, in any of those places, your job could be more technical or more managerial, or both.

TYPICAL DAY…

• On a typical day, they read email, go to meetings, and talk on the phone. Some of these meetings are with users to gain better understanding of the operational requirements. Some meetings are with contractors to check on the technical progress of the development. Others are to keep your management informed. Typical weeks are 0800-1700, M-F. But there are exceptions. A more interesting question would be what do they do on non-typical days?

Page 8: Officer Training School (OTS)

NON-TYPICAL DAY…

• Fly on B-52s• Test bombs/explosives• Launch and fly Spacecraft• Test rockets• Shoot down Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with a laser weapon system.

One of the greatest parts of being an engineer is that you get to develop, test, and work with some of the most sophisticated technology in the world.
