August 27, 2017 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed
in heaven.” —Matthew 16:19
Believing has always carried with it responsibility, and for some, authority. Today’s Gospel recounts Jesus
bestowing authority upon Peter, and by extension, to the church. This authority is based not on power, but on a powerful relationship to Christ. At its root, this is love, which translates into serving others. All who
follow Christ share in the responsibility to love and to serve others. We just do it in different, but equally
significant ways.
Scripture Reading Isaiah 22:19-23 God bestows authority upon Eliakim Psalm 138 Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands Romans 11:33-36 Peter gives praise to an inscrutable God Matthew 16:13-20 Jesus bestows authority upon Peter
Hope Appeal
Every year the programs and services supported by the HOPE Appeal touch countless lives in every city, town, and rural area in our seven-county diocese.
From the very young to the frail elderly, your gift makes a difference in the lives of so many.
As you know, the Diocese sets our annual Hope Appeal Goal. The goal set for our Parish for 2017 was
$41,671.00. As of today, we are $18,497.00 short of meeting our goal. If we do not meet our goal, we are not allowed to apply for any of the grant money we
have received each year, usually $10,000.00. We have used this grant money for the Ecumenical Food
Pantry and many programs here in the Parish. If you have not made a contribution or pledge to the Appeal please consider doing so. Please remember if we do not meet our goal, not only are we prohibited from getting grant funding but our Parish must make up
any amount we are short – Please help.
Question of the Week
For Adults: If you were asked, how would you explain Jesus to a person who had not heard of him? For Children: Who do you tell people Jesus is?
