НЕДІЛЯ ВСІХ СВЯТИХ

"Величаємо вас, апостоли, мученики, пророки

і всі святі, і почитаємо святу пам'ять вашу, ви бо молите за нас Христа Бога нашого"

(Величання на неділю Всіх святих).

Восьма неділя після празника Пасхи, а перша після Зіслання Святого Духа називається неділею Всіх святих. Вона завершує коло рухо-мих свят. Цього дня наша Східна Церква віддає особливу почесть усім тим, які є плодом дарів Святого Духа.

"У цей день, в неділю після П'ятдесятниці, — читаємо в синаксарі цієї неділі, — святкуємо празник Всіх святих скрізь — в Азії, Лівії, Європі, на півночі й півдні. Цей празник наші божественні Отці установили й наказали свят-кувати після Зіслання Святого Духа, наче пока-зуючи нам взір, як прихід всесвятого Духа вплинув на апостолів. Він освятив і зробив пре-мудрими тих, що з нашої природи, щоб їх по-ставити на місце грішних ангелів, і Христові Богові привів: одних через муки і кров, инших через постійність у чеснотливому житті".

Диякон Костянтин (VI ст. ) з Царгорода у своїй проповіді в першу неділю після Зіслання Святого Духа каже: "Грецька Церква визнач-ним і дуже світлим празником поминає ці слав-ні всесвітні безсмертні квіточки, що їх видала ціла земля, постійно навод-нювана ріками Свя-того Духа".

ІСТОРІЯ СВЯТА 1. Східна Церква

Наш церковний календар має на кожний день в році одного або й кілька святих. Та є дуже багато святих у небі, чиїх імен нема в церков-ному календарі, про них ніхто не знає, а їхні імена записані тільки в небесних книгах. Тож бажанням святої Церкви було, щоб усім святим

SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS

“We extol you, Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets and

all Saints, and we honor your holy memory, as you pray for us to Christ our God. “

(Hymn of Praise of the Sunday of All Saints) The eighth Sunday after the Resurrection, that

is, the first Sunday after Pentecost, is called the Sunday of All Saints. This feast completes the cy-cle of moveable feasts. On this day the Eastern Church pays particular veneration to all those who are the fruit of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

“On this day, that is, the Sunday of Pentecost,’’ we read in the Synaxary of this Sunday, “we cele-brate the feast of all Saints all over the whole world — in Asia, Libya, Europe, in the north and in the south. Our holy Fathers instituted this feast and directed it to be kept after the feast of the De-scent of the Holy Spirit, as if to set before us an example of how the coming of the all-Holy Spirit enabled them to attain sanctity. He made holy and all wise those who were of the same nature as we in order to give them the place forfeited by the fallen angels. Through Christ, he brought them to God — some through suffering and martyrdom; others through perseverance in the life of heroic virtue.”

The Deacon Constantine (6c) of Constantinople, in his sermon on the first Sunday after the descent of the Holy Spirit says: “The Greek Church, by a distinguished and very illustrious feast, honors the memory of those immortal flowers which the whole earth brings forth from that soil which is continuously refreshed by the flowing streams of the Holy Spirit.”

HISTORY ОF THE FEAST 1. In the Eastern Church

The veneration of the saints began with the death of the first martyrs of the Christian era.

що в небі, знаним і незнаним, віддати належний культ. І так постає перший празник на честь святих, але ще не всіх, а тільки всіх мучеників. У грецькій Церкві празник Усіх мучеників був уже за часів святого Йоана Золотоустого 407). Від нього навіть маємо похвальну бесіду на їхню честь в першу неділю після П'ятдесятниці. "Ще не минуло сім днів, — каже він, — як ми відбули священне торжество П'ятдесятниці, і знову нас прийняв хор мучеників, вірне ополчення і військо, що нічим не уступає ополченню ангелів, що його бачив Яків, але співревнуюче й рівне йому".

Найдавніший сирійський календар з 411 року подає п'ятницю після празника Пасхи як поминальний день Усіх мучеників. Календар халдейців-католиків і сирійців-несторіян у той сам день поминає Всіх ісповідників. У IV ст. в Едесі, сьогоднішня Туреччина, 13 травня святкували день Усіх мучеників. Цього дня на честь мучеників святий Єфрем Сирин († 373) склав окремий гимн.

Із сказаного випливає, що свято Всіх мучеників первісно не святкували скрізь того самого дня та що в одних Церквах воно було рухомим, а в инших нерухомим святом. У якому столітті свято Всіх мучеників перейшло в празник Всіх святих і перша неділя після П'ятдесятниці стала його днем, годі щось певного сказати. Відомо, що за цісаря Льва Мудрого (886-911) цей празник вже святкували на Сході, бо саме він збудував величний храм на честь Усіх святих. Князь Максиміліян каже, що на Сході празник Усіх святих свят-кували раніше, ніж на Заході (Виклади про східні Літургії).

2. ЗАХІДНА ЦЕРКВА Західна Церква святкує празник Усіх святих

1 листопада. І тут, як і на Сході, спочатку було в практиці свято Всіх мучеників, що його Церкви різних країн святкували у різний час. Святий Максим з Турину (V ст. ) має проповідь на честь Усіх мучеників у першу неділю після П'ятдесятниці. У 609 або 610 році папа Боніфатій IV одержав від цісаря Фоки римський Пантеон і присвятив його Пречистій Діві Марії і мученикам. Посвячення Пантеону відбулося 13 травня. Річницю цього дня відтак щорічно святкують з великим торжеством. Деякі бачать у тому початок свята Всіх святих.

Папа Григорій III (731-741) у базиліці святого Петра посвятив каплицю на честь Усіх святих. Дату посвяти цієї каплиці не знали, але від того часу в деяких країнах починають святкувати день Усіх святих 1 листопада.

The cult of the Martyrs in later centuries incorporated also the cult of the apostles, bishops and ascetics, and religious of both sexes. Emperor Constantine the Great built a church in Constantinople in memory of the Twelve Apostles.

Before long, the cult of the New Testament saints was extended to include that of the Old Testament saints. St. Cyril of Jerusalem in his fifth Mystagogical Catechesis attests that during the Divine Liturgy after the consecration “we commemorate those who have fallen asleep before us, first, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, so that through their prayers and intercession, God may receive our petition. Afterwards, we commemorate the Holy Fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep before us...” Our Church commemorates the Old Testament Saints on the Sunday of the Forefathers and Fathers before the feast of the Nativity of our Lord. Some of these saints also have a special day of their own dedicated to them during the year.

Our Church Calendar dedicates each day in the year to one or more saints or classes of saints. There are multitudes of saints in heaven whose names are not recorded in the Church Calendar and whose names are unknown to the world even though they are forever inscribed in the Book of Life. Therefore, it is the wish of holy Church that fitting honor be paid to both the known and unknown saints in heaven.

2. IN THE WESTERN CHURCH

The Western Church keeps the feast of All Saints on the first of November. In the West as well as in the East, the feast of All Martyrs was first to be observed and it was kept at different times by the Latin Churches in various countries. St. Maxim of Turin (5c) has left a sermon in honor of All Martyrs that was delivered on the first Sunday after Pentecost. In 609 or 610 Pope Boniface IV received the Roman Pantheon from Emperor Phocas and dedicated it to the most Pure Virgin Mary and the martyrs on the 13th of May. From that time on, the anniversary of this dedication was celebrated annually with great solemnity. Some believe this marks the origin of the feast of All Saints.

Pope Gregory III (731-741) dedicated a chapel in the Basilica of St. Peter in honor of All Saints. The date of this dedication is unknown, but it is known that from that time on, certain countries began to celebrate the feast of All Saints on the first day of November.
