BLESSING CANDLES ON THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD

JESUS CHRIST

If there is anything we really notice in any

Ukrainian Church, it is candles. Candles are every-where and at all times. We have candles for all occasions: at Easter, Epiphany, Christmas, bap-tisms, funerals, in front of icons, at vigils and on the altar. So why does our church have so many candles? Well, to light a candle is to pray. Light-ing a candle is an act of prayer.

To understand this further we have to look at the bible. God has always appeared as a fire, or a bright light. Jesus’ birth was announced by a star of light. The Holy Spirit came upon the church as tongues of fire. Throughout history God has ap-peared as fire and light.

In every church there is an ever burning sanc-tuary lamp. When you see this light burning, as you do in all our churches, you are reminded that Jesus Christ is kept in the Holy Tabernacle. The candle is the symbol of the presence of God.

People light candles when they come to church. That candle is an act of prayer. We usual-ly light this candle with some intention in mind e.g. someone is sick, someone needs a blessing etc.

The devil is afraid of the candle because he is afraid of the light which symbolizes Jesus who is also known as the “truth”. The devil loves the darkness. The candle breaks the darkness and gives a light for all to see the truth which comes from, and is God. So, instead of cursing the dark-ness we light a candle of hope and love. The East-er candle is exactly this same light because Jesus, by is Resurrection, delivered our freedom from darkness which is also know as sin.

Altar boys and others hold candles when the priest is reading the Gospel. Since the bible is the Word of God, it is also the light of the world. This light helps us see the path of life which must go

НА СВЯТО СТРІТЕННЯ

Коли ми з Вами приходимо до храму найпе-

рше, що ми дійсно помічаємо, це свічки. Свіч-ки є скрізь і в усі часи. Свічка супроводжує людину від її народження та до завершення життя, запалюємо свічку на Великдень, Йор-дан, Різдво, запалюємо їх перед іконами, на молитві. То чому в нашій церкві стільки сві-чок? Запалення свічки - це акт молитви.

Щоб зрозуміти це далі, ми повинні зверну-тися до Святого Письма. Бог завжди являє себе як вогонь, чи яскраве світло. Народження Ісуса сповістила світла зірка . Святий Дух прийшов на церкву, у вигляді вогняних язиків. Протя-гом історії Бог поставав як вогонь і світло.

У кожній церкві постійно горить вічне світ-ло, це символ, що Ісус Христос зберігається в Святому Кивоті на престолі. Свічка є симво-лом присутності Бога.

Люди запалюють свічки, коли приходять до церкви. Ми зазвичай запалюємо цю свічку з деяким наміром, наприклад, хтось хворий, ко-мусь потрібне благословення і т.д.

Диявол боїться свічки, бо боїться світла, яке символізує Ісуса, який також відомий як "правда". Чорт любить темряву. Свічка розби-ває темряву і дає світло всім бачити правду, яка походить, і є Богом. Отже, замість про-кляття темряви ми запалюємо свічку надії та любові. Пасхальна свічка є саме таким світлом, оскільки Ісус, воскресіння, визво-лив нашу свободу від темряви, яку також знають як гріх.

Вівтарна дружина тримають свічки, коли священик читає Євангеліє. Оскільки Біблія - це Слово Боже, воно також є світлом.

through darkness at times. The candle we receive at baptism is a very

important candle. It is so rich with symbolism. Jesus comes to the child and dispels the darkness of sin and gives the one baptised the light to walk in the truth.

Every time we seek God or are praying we should hold a candle or have one lit. In Matt. 5:16 we read, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see you good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven”.

It is not only in church that we need to light candles. The world needs the light of Christ even more. There are no secret citizens in the Kingdom of God. There are those who hold candles and are witness to the light of truth and those who do not know God, or are ashamed of God and never have any light around them. They neither serve God nor their fellow humans; they are lost in the darkness.

The next time you are in church have a look around and light a candle of hope.

The candle is usually made of pure beeswax and so should our hearts be pure. The wick represents the soul of Christ, Our Lord, and the flame represents His Divinity—the fact that He is God. At the Presentation of Our Lord in the temple, St. Simeon held Jesus in his arms and proclaimed that “Jesus is the light that enlightens every person that comes into this world.” He said, “Now, O Lord, you may dismiss your servant in peace for my eyes have seen Your salvation - A revealing light to the Gentiles.” It has become a custom in many of our Churches to bless candles on the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord to remind us that Christ is the Light of the World. Blessing candles is done during the Matins Service or sometimes incorporated into the Divine Liturgy.

Lighting candles: reminds us the God is the ‘Light of the World.’ expresses our belief that Jesus is the Light of

the World and that as His disciples, we are called daily to reflect His light in our lives.

is a Christian way to prepare the soul for a life of dedication and to offer the best of what one has to God.

Candles can also be used: during Christmas Eve Holy Supper. during the blessing of a home with Holy Water. during the blessing of our Easter baskets. for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. during a storm or other perils that may frighten

us. We do this with faith and hope that God would

protect us from all danger and misfortune.

Це світло допомагає нам бачити життєвий шлях, який часом повинен проходити через темряву.

Свічка, яку ми отримуємо при хрещенні, є дуже важливою свічкою. Ісус приходить до дитини і розганяє темряву гріха і дарує хрещеному світло щоб жити по правді.

У Євангелиста Маттея 5:16 читаємо: «Отак ваше світло нехай світить перед людьми, щоб вони бачили ваші добрі діла, та прославляли Отця вашого, що на небі.».

Свічка, як правило, виготовляється з чистого бджолиного воску, і так має бути чистим і наше серце. Гніт уособлює душу Христа, Господа нашого, а полум'я являє Його Божественність - факт, що Він є Богом. При зустрічі (Стрітенні) Господа нашого у храмі святий Симеон тримав Ісуса на руках і проголосив, що "Ісус - це світло, яке просвічує кожну людину, що приходить у цей світ". Він сказав: "Тепер, Господи, можеш відпустити раба свого у мирі, бо очі побачили спасіння - світло на просвіщення для народів". У багатьох наших Церквах стало звичаєм благословляти свічки у свято Стрітення Господа нашого, щоб нагадувати нам, що Христос - це світло світу. Освячення свічок робиться під час Утренні або після Божественної Літургії.

Чим для нас є запалення свічки: нагадує нам, що Бог є "Світлом світу" висловлює нашу віру, що Ісус є Світлом

світу і що ми, як Його учні, щодня покликані відображати Його світло у нашому житті.

Стрітенську Свічку також можна використовувати:

під час святкової вечері у Святвечір. під час освячення будинку святою водою. під час освячення наших великодніх

кошиків. на дні народження, весілля та ювілеї. під час бурі чи інших небезпек, які

можуть нас налякати. Ми робимо це з вірою і сподіваємось, що

Бог захистить нас від будь-якої небезпеки і нещастя.

We invite you to join us for Pyrohy (aka “pierogi”) every Friday. Enjoy a dozen warm pyrohy to dine in or take some to go to share

with your co-workers or loved ones. Pyrohy are on sale every Friday

from 11am - 1pm in our school hall (314 6th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413;

Parking in rear of school or on street). Pyrohy are available in potato and sauerkraut

varieties. Dine-in: $10/dozen. To-Go: $9/dozen.

PYROHY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We ask all who are able to volunteer with

preparations of onions, potatoes, and sauer-kraut on Wednesday and Thursday each week, and with the making of pyrohy on Fri-day, beginning at 8:30 AM. Pyrohy sales are a vital source of income for our parish and can only be successful with your help!

We appreciate the gifts of your time and talent!
