50 Years of Regret
Monday May 16th 2016 marked the 50
th
anniversary of the beginning of China’s Cultural Revolution in 1966. Mao Zedong ordered schools to be closed to force young people to leave cities and work in remote villages.
If you saw the movie The Killing Fields, something similar happened in Cambodia.
In the case of China the cultural shift caused the economy to collapse and millions to be threatened with starvation. More than 1 million were imprisoned, killed or committed suicide.
Mao was worried that Intellectuals and Capitalists were seeking to overthrow the revolution of the common people.
People had to wait until 1981, five years after the death of Mao, to get a reversal and a recognition that Mao himself and the “Gang of Four” were responsible.
During the Cultural Revolution family members spied on each other and reported their kin to the Authorities. A man called Zhang Hongbing caused his own mother to be sent to her death.
The present President Xi Jinping was sent to the northwest to the province of Shaanxi and lived in a cave for 6 years. His own father was sent to prison.
It has been the practice of China to blame foreign intervention for its problems, but the Cultural Revolution is totally of their own making.
At some time in history an examination of conscience may be necessary. Before one can be absolved, it is necessary to make a good confession. The Communist party needs to make such a confession. The souls of 1 million are crying out for it.
