Introduction to the OBATE™ fuel solution
for enriched methanol fuel
Michael Teusch, [email protected]
Background for OBATE™ - Regulations drive the market
The shipping industry will over the coming years have to apply to new regulations
that will force them to reduce emission of SOx, NOx and particles.
Some areas have stricter regulations than others. The areas with the strictest
regulations are the SECA areas (Sulphur Emission Controlled Areas).
As of October 29, 2012 all EU ports are considered SECA area.
From 2020/2025 the regulation applies globally
What do these new regulations mean?
Basically it means that all existing and new ships have to comply to the SOx
emission restrictions by 1/1-2015 and all new ships ordered after 1/1-2016 have to
comply to the NOx emission requirements – this might be postponed 5 years!

Background for OBATE™ - Regulations drive the market
Majority of all ships are sailing on Heavy Fuel Oil (3.5% S)
and therefore cannot be used in SECA from 1-Jan-2015
The following options have to be considered:
– Install scrubbers in order to continue sailing on HFO
– Switch to Marine Gas Oil (0,1% S)
– Retrofit ship to sail on LNG
– Switch to enriched methanol fuel = Zero SOx emission
• Crude or regular methanol is feed into
the OBATE™ fuel solution, and through
a catalytic process transformed into
enriched methanol, which is a mixture
of:
• DME (dimethyl ether)
• methanol and
• water.

The OBATE™ fuel solution - flexible set-up
Michael Teusch, [email protected]
Methanol can be stored in ordinary tanks
for petroleum products.
• Methanol can be stored in inerted integral tanks surrounded by
cofferdams above water line and with single skin below water
line.
• Methanol can be stored in double bottom tank. Single skin is
acceptable.
• Methanol is totally
dilutable in water.

Methanol production
Global methanol production approx. 60M MTPY
Today only around 11% of the volume is used for fuel
Primary feedstock comes from natural gas and coal
Regional possibilities for alternative green feedstock

Potential in the European SECA area
Fuel consumption in European SECA area is estimated to
33,000,000 metric tons, which can be split into:
Heavy fuel Oil (HFO) Marine Gas Oil (MGO)
27,000,000 tons 6,000,000 tons
- If all HFO was converted to MeOH = 54,000,000 tons of MeOH
- A conversion of 10% (5,400,000 tons) = 9% of todays global
MeOH production.
What is needed:
- Infrastructure in terms of bunker ships and methanol storage
terminals must be in place

Technical summary
We know:
– OBATETM fuel behavior – good fuel for existing diesel engines!
– How to keep engine emissions down with OBATETM fuel
– It has fuel flexibility: works with Crude and industrial grade methanol
OBATETM secure:
– High fuel efficiency
– Low NOx and low or no soot
– No SOx
Critical next steps & challenges
– Supply chain and infrastructure must be readily available
Thank you.
