BOT August Report We warmly welcome parent Mr Antony Ford to the Craighead Board of Trustees,

as a co-opted member. A local Accountant, Mr Ford replaces Mr Brian Rae as Chair of our Finance Committee. New HOD Mathematics, Miss Kelly Dawe presented her triennial report on behalf of the Mathematics and Statistics Department. Programmes and assessments in Mathematics are based on contextual problems, with an emphasis on problem solving so that students can contribute to an ever-evolving society. Members of the Department are excited about our proposed curriculum changes and opportunities planned for 2018, particularly with respect to cross curricular collaboration. The Mathematics Department achieves very good academic results, is well resourced, and has skilled and passionate teachers who have good access to professional development opportunities. Student Representative, Sophie Balchin gave a detailed report about what she gained from being one of eight Student Representatives to attend the School Trustees Association Annual conference, held in Dunedin last holidays. In amongst topics about governance, Sophie was most impressed by Professor Harlene Hayne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, as an inspirational example of women in leadership roles. Sports Advisory Council The Craighead Sports Advisory Council has now been operating for almost 3 years. This group was set up to look at five key aspects of sport – Community Relationships, Recognition of Achievement, Participation and Opportunity, Building Capacity and Initiatives and Issues. Good progress has been made in most of these areas, most notably the development of the Craighead Sports Portal, the introduction of a Sports awards ceremony, sourcing inspirational speakers, rationalising cups and trophies, streamlining documentation, and honouring outstanding achievement and commitment to a sport.

Mrs Rebecca Dobbs was the inaugural Chairperson and has done an excellent job of setting up the structure and framework for how the Council operates. Mrs Dobbs has now completed her term, and we thank her for her tremendous leadership over the past three years. It is pleasing to see that other local secondary schools are now following our lead!

We are delighted that Parent Representative Mr Mick Geary has now taken up the role of Chairperson. Other members include: Mrs Lee-Anne Lang and Mrs Verna Parker (Community Representatives), Anna Hayward and Sarah Templeton (Sports Captains), Mr Allan Faith and Mrs Diane Surridge (PE Department Staff Representatives), Mr Mick Geary and Ms Caro Rhodes (Parent Representatives).

We wish Leah McDonald the best of luck as she heads to China next week to represent New Zealand at the World Speed Skating

    Championships in Junior (U20) races.

    God Bless, Lindy Graham, Principal

    Emma Helliwell—Head Librarian 2017

I began at Craighead in 2013 as a Year 9 student from a small country school, eager to begin the new adventure of high school. Throughout my years here, I have participated in Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Football and Archery. I was Captain of Archery last year, though unfortunately we have been unable to continue this year due to the construction of the new gymnasium. I am a member of the Social committee, Health committee, SADD committee, Amnesty committee and, of course, the Library committee.

So far this year, I have enjoyed working with the Library committee and the wonderful Mrs Oliver to keep the library tidy and inviting, and filled with various book displays including the very popular ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ display. I am excited for the new library that Craighead will have next year, and the opportunities it will create in terms of study areas and extra space.

Although my time at Craighead is nearly over, the five years I have spent here have allowed me to develop into the person I am today. I am incredibly grateful for the supportive environment, challenges and opportunities with which Craighead has provided me.

    FIRST AID CERTIFICATION

    Thirty girls received their

    Comprehensive First Aid

certificates after completing a course of

study at school last weekend. The girls are now qualified in

Work Place First Aid and Resuscitation. The course was

funded through our student STAR funding.

    ME—Endometriosis and Menstrual Health

As part of our Health Programme, Craighead recently invited Tayla Gray (below) from

'Endometriosis New Zealand' to present to our Year 10/11 girls about their world leading ME programme. This engaging and informative presentation educated our students about the differences between normal and not so normal menstrual health, and what can be done to address abnormalities. This was extremely useful and enlightening for our student's and very relevant as up to 1 in 10 women in NZ suffer from the distress of endometriosis. Tayla kindly donated a book on endometriosis to our library which is available for all students.

Further information can be found on the Endometriosis NZ website, www.nzend.org.nz or you are welcome to contact me for further information.

Mrs Joanne Grace—Guidance Counsellor / Teacher of PEH

Congratulations to our Future Problem Solvers who received an Achievement Award for their research on “How to assist the medical field

in dealing with the antibiotic resistant genes present in a variety of GMO foods”. L-R: Emma Jarvie, Sophie Tucker, Rosa Dobbs, Amber Murray and Mrs Gala Kirke.
