WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A FAMILY CRUISER.1) Insist on a boat that performs. It may

seem obvious, but every sailboat that's fun is a sailboatthat really sails. It should handle easily, deliver reason-able speed on every point and provide an enjoyableexperience in light, moderate and even heavy breezes.As your sailing ability improves, so will your scorn for aclumsy boat, and your appreciation for a good performer.

4) Look for an honest sailaway price. If carswere sold the way sailboats are, they'd come withouttires or engines. Sails, running rigging and other impor-tant details are "optional."

Buy an O'Day, and you'll sail it away pretty muchthe way you'll sail it for the next five years.

2) Demand attention to safety. No onerespects open water more than the experienced seaman,who has seen all its moods and sudden whims. It wouldbe foolish to trust your family to a boat that is notdesigned to cope with foul weather.

Look carefully at each boat you are seriouslyconsidering, and trust your judgment. Are the stemheadand chainplate fittings custom stainless steel compo-nents, substantially constructed and properly attached?Are the topsides smooth and is the sheer line an even,fair curve? Is the centerboard totally sealed within itswell? Canyou remove it for inspection or is that a boatyard job?

Are the rigging, spars and deck hardware non-corrosive stainless steel and aluminum alloy, and do theylook strong enough to handle an unexpected problem?

O'Day boats are designed and built by peoplewhose whole life is sailing, and who enjoy the boats withtheir families just as you do with yours. All the loyalty inthe world wouldn't get them to buy an O'Day if theydidn't believe in its safety.

3) Look for a boat that's built to last.Sailboats have to be tough because lakes and oceans aretough on sailboats. The rig must stand in heavy air. Thehull must endure the punishment of sharp, choppy waves.The fittings must withstand the corrosion of salt water.

Our theory of building calls for boats to be madea little stronger than they have to be. We lay up thefiberglass decks and hulls by hand - instead of sprayingthem with chopped fibers. Each component used is con-sidered for its ruggedness and durability. And the QualityControl Inspector's signed report accompanies every

hundreds of firms making sailboats today. Many aredecent products. Many others are not. And, as in mosthobbyist businesses, some of the least satisfactory prod-ucts are sold by the sincerest people.

Before you place an order, ask yourself if thecompany will still be around when you need warrantyhelp or replacement parts.

6) Choose a boat that fits your needs. Don'tmake an investment in a boat that's too cramped for yourfamily or not suited for the waters you intend to sail.

Will you moor or trailer the boat? What boats areraced near you? Is your area known for light or heavyair? Is the water deep or shoal? How often will you usethe boat, and how far will you usually sail?

If you're not sure how to judge those require-ments, your local O'Day dealer is a good place to look forhell). We choose each dealer for his knowledge andsincerity. And he'll stock the kind of boats that are mostlikely to fit his area and please his customers.

7) Even if you're only interested in cruis-ing, don't completely discount racing. Unfortu-nately, racing puts many sailors off. To some, the anxietyand pressure seem unnecessary. To others, the rulesand skills seem complicated and difficult.

It's pleasing for us to see that some O'Dayowners race the very same boats in which they and their

families cruise. And many do very well.John Deknatel, Winn Willard and Peter Boyce of

Hunt Associates design each new O'Day cruiser to be agood performer. Where rating rule advantages conflictwith cruising advantages the latter always takes prece-dence. But you'd be surprised how often the two arequite compatible. We're not saying that O'Day cruiserswill win against flat-out racers. But we are saying thatyou can expect to do well, and with good judgment andboat handling, perhaps even win.

Race winners will tell you that there's no fasterway to gain sailing proficiency than in competition. Andeven persistent race losers will tell you there's no betterway to have fun.

8) Read the Warranty. Most boat owners getaround to reading the warranty just after they've hadtheir first problem. We suggest that you read it beforeyou buy the boat.

Each is different. Some are written to protect themanufacturer. The good ones are written to protect you.

And remember, a written warranty isn't muchbetter than the intention of the company that created it.Enforcing an insincere warranty can cost more in timeand money than the problem is worth.

Critical design and construction featuresyou should fully understand. When you're out hav-ing fun on the water, you'll take good design and con-struction for granted. With the right boat you can.

But when you are at the point of making a seriousinvestment in that "right boat," you have an obligation toyourself and to your family to really understand whysome boats can be trusted, and some cannot.

O'Day builds keellcenterboarders. Others buildswing keelers. There are important differences.

The problems of swing keelers. The veryfirst trailerables all had swing keels - heavy metal bladesthat retracted completely within a box in the cabin. Whileswing keels solved the trailer loading problem, theyintroduced other very questionable characteristics.1) With the board retracted the boat has to be substan-

tially less stable. (Basic physics: the center of gravityis much closer to the center of buoyancy.)

2) With the board up, the directional control is substan-tially diminished. (The boat has become a saucer onthe water.)

3) The pin on which the keel pivots penetrates (and issupported by) the centerboard trunk within the cabin.Leaks are common, in spite of continued efforts to thecontraly.

4) Should the side of the keel strike a submerged object,the keel can act as a lever against the vulnerable trunkwithin the hull. Serious damage is possible.

5) Raising and lowering a heav y metal keel is hard on theequipment, and hard on the crew.

6) The keel trunk clutters valuable interior space anddictates the entire accommodation layout.

7) Paint will chip from a metal board. Permanent sealingis impossible. Rust is an inevitability.

8) Removing the keel for inspection is a job for a boatyard.

The advantages of O'Day's keel/center-boards. The O'Day trailerable cruisers are built with aballasted fixed keel into which a lightly ballasted center-board can be drawn. No centerboard trunk penetratesthe cabin. Yet trailer loading is still quite easy.1) Even with the board retracted, the ballast is well away

from (below) the center of buoyancy, and the hull hasvery good inherent stability.

2) A fixed keel maintains directional control in shallowwater when the board is up.

3) The unique O'Day keel/centerboard installation per-mits the hull and centerboard housing to be molded inone secure, totally sealed component. The implica-tions of this construction are incredible.a) The hull integrity is never penetrated, even to

accommodate a centerboard pivot pin. The possibil-ity of centerboard leakage is practically nil.

b) The board is readily removed - by the owner - forinspection and painting.

c) The ballast in the keel is totally enveloped by thefiberglass hull, not bolted to it. (Keel bolt holes aresources of potential leaks.) There is no keel expo-sure to water.

4) A lightly ballasted centerboard is easy to raise andlower, even for a child.

You have a right to ask if keel/centerboards haveany disadvantages. They do, one. Without question, theyare more expensive to build. And that's it.

Desirable design features you shouldappreciate. O'Day doesn't cut corners. Just as HuntAssociates developed the hull, rig and layout, industrialdesigners Banka Mango Inc. have refined the surfacematerials.1) All main bulkheads are easy cleaning laminate with a

teak appearance.2) All interior components are structural - the fiberglass

pan, the fiberglass headliner, the wood joinerwork -are tied together 'in such a way as to contribute to theintegrity of the boat.

3) All have outboard rudders - no chance for loading orlaunching damage. Easy to see and remove snaggedobjects underway.

4) All are fitted with mast tabernacles - a hinged elementwhich allows two people to rig the mast with the boaton the trailer before launching. Yes, even the bigO'Day 25.

5) All fabrics are soft spun synthetics, treated withScotchguard for stain and mildew resistance.

6) All ports are made with tinted glass - reducing glareand cabin heat, and improving privacy to the pointwhere curtains are not really necessarl,

7) All forward hatches close flush to the deck. No leaks,nothing on which to trip or catch a line.

THE 01DAY220The O'Day 22 has become a modem clas-

sic. "Modem" because the design is entirely con-temporary and functionally very satisfying for acruising family of four. "Classic" because over3,200 have been sold. In 1979, the O'Day 22becomes even better.

This year, we've redesigned the22 into atrue keel /centerboarder - faster on all points ofsail, easier to trail, equally at home in shoalharbors or blue water.

Good looks never hurt. Part of the22's appeal is that it looks very pretty.Pretty swinging on a mooring. Prettier yet underthe press of all plain sail.

The O'Day 22 is a real sailing boat—straightforward and uncomplicated, forgiving forthe new sailor, rewarding for the accomplishedveteran. You don't have to be an expert to enjoythe 22. Even under the masthead spinnaker, newsailors are surprised at how comfortable thesteering really is.

The cockpit is 6 feet - room enough for allthe family and a bunch of their friends.

With the board up, the 22 draws less than1'3". Board down, 4'3" of draft bites into thewater for vastly improved windwardperformance.

Home for four. Other 22 foot boats offeraccommodations for four. But how many offerprivacy for four?

Forward, a V-berth and head area(the portable marine head is optional) are sepa-rated from the main salon by a solid door. The 66"settee berths are wonderfully comfortable.

The galley has a built-in stainless steelsink, a five gallon water supply, and a place forthe optional two-burner stove. The stowawaytable hides under the cockpit seat betweenmealtimes.

A boat that's sold complete. O'Daydoesn't skimp on fittings that make a sailboat safeand functional. We don't believe in making every-thing optional including the kitchen sink. So each22 comes complete with an outboard bracket,roller reefing, a tabernacle for raising and lower-ing the mast, Dacron running rigging, halyards,and - most important - a main and a jib.

The O'Day 22 has the all-around personal-ity of a fine and proper little yacht. Lots of com-panies have copied the ideas. But only O'Day canbuild a real O'Day 22. Check it out with yournearby dealer.

THE O'DAY23.At the mooring, it would be easy to mis-

take the O'Day 23 for a lean MORC racer. Power-ful lines. Arresting good looks. No unsightlylumps or bulges to stuff it with more interior room.How can it be a spacious trailerable familycruising boat?

John Deknatel and the Hunt Associates'designers looked at every existing trailerable 23,and decided that they all compromised features toget open space, or open space to get features.So they resolved to make each O'Day 23 featurebigger than ever thought possible, attacking theproblem with two unusual techniques. Thinkingand experience.

The machine for cruising. Everythingaft of the cabin bulkhead is loungeable. Thetable folds up onto the bulkhead, out of the way.A galley unit slides and locks under the portcockpit seat, and the sink and water pump unithides under the starboard seat.

For the few hours a day they are in use,the galley and sink units extend on runners intothe cabin. The y are simultaneously reachablefrom a convenient seat on the companionwaysteps (where the icebox is recessed) or indepen-(lently usable from the settees. And when meal-times are over—zip—out of the wa y, and thespace they needed is returned to you forrelaxation.

The settees themselves are 67" long, andthe port seat extends inboard to form a doublebed. Two more guests can ensconce themselvesin the big 6'3" V-berths forward.

A private head's to port. A hanging locker'sto starboard. Storage bins abound for linens,food, navigational gear and collected junk.

The machine for sailing. If you're newto sailing, you'll be pleased at how simple the 23is to operate, how forgiving it is to handle andhow well it performs. And should you ever findracing a temptation, you can expect to do surpris-ingly well.

With the board down, the boat draws adeep 54". Board up, it's a shoal draft 2'3".There are 246 square feet of sail countered by1200 pounds of lead ballast. What do all thesenumbers mean? Exciting performance!

On deck, an anchor locker forward meansno wet lines aft, and that the anchor lies quickly athand when it's needed. The forward hatch sealsflush. There's even an extra icebox for refresh-ments and a special ventilated cockpit locker tohold the outboard's gas tank.

If we thought you could buy a better boatthan the O'Day 23, we'd build that one instead.

We don't. You can't. Because the O'Day 23is a true state-of-the-art trailerable cruiser.

THE O'DAY 250The O'Day 25 is an extender of horizons -

a distance traveler on the water or traileringbehind your car. It is also America's most suc-cessful 25 footer, ever. Families who really lovetheir sailing, love their 25.

John Deknatel and the designers atHunt Associates conceived of the 25 as a maxi-trailerable that had big boat performance andfeel, and 100% usable interior space.

They moved the settees right out to thepoint of maximum beam, raising the deck forplenty of sitting room. Then they narrowed thetrunk cabin, keeping maximum headroom abovethe walking areas, and leaving nice wide sidedecks for sunbathing.

New raised storage bin/seat backs holdmore gear that can be accessed with less hassle,and create a space beneath which allows eachsettee berth to gain almost an extra foot of width.

Keel and Centerboard. The two 25's

___________________ are identical in just about every way from the- - bottom up. The cockpit is 7 feet across (wider

than most are long). Both share that wonderfulquality of good handling, a result of a beautifully

-balanced rudder. And both are very fast

E- -- The centerboarder, however, is game for

shallow water sailing, drawing only 2'3" with the

Z_. board up (and a whopping 6' with the board down).It also trails obediently and easily, right at thenational speed limit. With the tabernacle, a smallcrew can raise or lower the mast in no time at all

The keel version is for sailors blessed withdeep water, or sailors who want to race. Drawing
