North Tonawanda High School DECA Installs Chapter Members On November 7, 2012 NTHS DECA members were installed at Salvatore‟s Italian Gardens during a ceremony for all Region 12 DECA members. There are 15 schools in Region 12 DECA all the way from Lewiston-Porter to Orchard Park. This is the first official DECA Regional event of the year. Members dress in business attire and celebrate their installation with a dinner and ceremony. This year we listened to a speech made by a former Lancaster DECA student who now owns his own business. His presentation was very inspirational. In attendance for North Tonawanda High School were students, parents, teachers, administrators, and school board members. In the pictures shown several DECA members are making the “DECA Diamond” the national DECA symbol and in the second picture Regional Officer and NTHS co-president Adam Doucette lights the candle of NTHS co-president Connor Greene. We at AFS (American Field Service) would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank all of our host families for their time and dedication over the past school year. The students attending North Tonawanda High School have been able to experience a diverse cultural opportunity that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It is now time for you to let us know if there are any families interested in obtaining information about hosting a student for the upcoming school year. DECA Contributes to the Giving Tree Project

This is an annual project spearheaded by the North Tonawanda High School Guidance Department and Career Center to support NT families. There are many families who are in need, and during the holiday season it is especially important to reach out to them. DECA students select three ornaments from the tree, discuss what would be the best items to get, shop for the appropriate gifts and then wrap the gifts. These gifts are then taken to the Guidance Department to put together with all the other gifts to be delivered. This is a rewarding experience for the students; they enjoy buying gifts for others knowing that it will make their Christmas happier. The main participants this year were Carlie McClinsey, Adam Doucette, Adam Krause and Wes Fezer.

Hospitality Marketing Students Showcase the

Disney Company The Hospitality Marketing students at NTHS hosted the 10th Annual Open House for the Travel Leisure Company (TLC) in the Library Media Center on December 13, 2012. The Travel Leisure Company is a virtual enterprise for which the students enacted the role of specialty travel agents. This year our agents planned their dream trip to various Disney properties/destinations around the world. Student agents were required to prepare brochures, business cards, a PowerPoint presentation, and a display booth to showcase their destination and other Disney information. Destinations included Disneyland Paris, the Disney Cruise Line, and the Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii. Over 100 people visited this year‟s event.

All of the student displays and presentations were judged by the visiting customers and were awarded recognition based on evaluations completed by the customers.

NTHS Students Attend Private Screening of

“Lincoln “ On Thursday, December 20, 2012, over two hundred (200)

NTHS juniors, parents, and teachers took part in a private screening of the critically acclaimed movie, “Lincoln.” The movie did a wonderful job explaining the important decisions that Abraham Lincoln faced as he grappled with the ending of the Civil War and the passage of the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery. The students were well behaved and really enjoyed the Hollywood reenactments of a critical time in our nation‟s history. The social studies teachers who planned this field trip appreciate the cooperation and flexibility exhibited by their colleagues and support staff at NTHS. Kudos to Mr. Afshani, Mrs. Cornell, Mr. Hennessy, Mr. Fezer, Mrs. Cindric and all of the NTHS students (right) who represented themselves and our school so well.

Foreign Language Club Sponsors Annual “Trick

or Treat” for U.N.I.C.E.F. Charity Event

This year for the second time in the history of UN.I.C.E.F, donations stayed in the U.S. to help the children victims of Hurricane Sandy. Participation was huge this year! Club advisor Miss Paul would like to congratulate the participants for collecting almost $500.00 in change. Every penny counts! Only 25 cents can give a child clean drinking water for an entire day.

Katie’s Story... Real World Connections

Students in Ms. Plummer‟s English 9 classes read Tuesdays with Morrie, a novel about life lessons such as compassion for others and living life to its fullest. As a culminating activity, the English 9 students (as well as Ms. Plummer‟s AIS Writing and Mr. Fezer‟s AIS Global students) wrote friendly letters to a young girl named

Katie. Katie is a four year-old girl who has a heart condition and is also a family friend of Ms. Plummer. The diagnosis of her heart condition has led to three open heart surgeries and she is currently awaiting news to see if she needs a bone marrow transplant. With permission from Katie‟s parents, the students were introduced to Katie‟s condition and its ramifications. With this information, students were able to make a real world connection between what they had read and relating it to a real person. Using this information, they wrote and word processed friendly letters which were sent in a care package to Bolingbrook, Illinois, to cheer Katie up right before Thanksgiving. Some students even chose to add colored pictures, stickers, and handmade jewelry to the package. Both Katie and her mother were overjoyed! Not only were NTHS students able to demonstrate compassion for others, but they were also able to realize how thankful they should be for everything they have, including their health.

Tech Wars at NCCC Let’s Get It On!

The North Tonawanda Technology and Academy of Engineering and Architecture students participated in the annual Tech Wars at Niagara County Community College again. We were among 22 Niagara and Erie County school districts with over 800 students to compete in the 15th annual Tech Wars at Niagara County Community College. There were 21 different events. The competitions ranged from RC Heavyweight Sumo Robotics to 3D Modeling and CO2 Car Races. The event is sponsored by NCCC to promote continued education for our high school students. The CAD competitions included one of our academy juniors, Kyle Bortz. He participated in the 3D Solid Modeling On-Site competition. It is a grueling contest where the students are given an object that needs to be taken apart, measured and drawn on a 3D CAD program in a short amount of time. Even though Kyle started learning a 3D program recently, he managed a 3rd place prize. The design and build projects included an On-Site Engineering Challenge. They are given a building project at

the location and the students have to create the design within a specified amount of time. The design is measured by how well it supports the challenge. Joshua Braymiller, Marissa Mattice and Zack Archibald did a great job. We had three teams enter the King of the Hill contest and two of our girls entered the t-shirt design. Nickolas Kraus, Joseph Boryszewski, Jarod Harack, and Stephen Moore built one of the lightest 6 foot bridges but it still held 125 pounds. The efficiency ratio put the bridge in 13th place. This year was the first time the middle school joined the high school. Mr. Walker, one of the middle school technology teachers brought 11 students and they all took part in the bridge building contest or CO2

car races. The bridges for the middle school are much smaller but they are still scored by the load weight divided by the bridge weight. Some came very close to winning. It was great to have a large contingent representing the North Tonawanda Technology Department. The all day event is fun for all and a great experience. Good job and congratulations to all of our North Tonawanda Tech Wars participants.

An Eye-Opening Experience

NTHS students from FACS classes, Health CAP and AOIT attended an eye-opening field trip on January 10th at NCCC. The Police, Youth & Community Relations Seminar is held annually to provide an informal means for law enforcement and community service represen-tatives to promote an awareness of programs available to the youth population. Students who attended were able to select four(4) workshops covering the following important topics:

TEEN SUICIDE ALCOHOL & THE LAW

TEEN PREGNANCY DATING VIOLENCE

PRISON EXPERIENCE HIV

DRUG COURT CONFLICT RESOLUTION

DECISION MAKING TEEN VIOLENCE

All of our participants enjoyed the field trip and were amazed by some of the presenters. Their real-life stories made a strong impact and will have a positive effect on our future decisions!

Team Building and Leadership Event

The North Tonawanda High School Academy of Business and Finance attended a team building and leadership seminar during the month of November. Thirty members of this academy travelled to LaserTron in Amherst to participate in team building exercises. A one-hour interactive lecture was followed by one and one-half hours of actual LaserTron play in the arena. For the first round there were no instructions given and the

member of the two teams tried to outscore each other. Once the round was concluded each team was given instructions on how to work as a team to be successful. There were four rounds in all with instructions between each round. The academy students learned a great deal and had fun at the same time. This event brings all three classes of the academy together to bond. The seniors take the other members under their wing and assist them in any way they can. In the pictures students are completing workbooks and participating in an activity.

Santa Visits Applebee’s! On Sunday, December 2, 2012, Santa - no, two Santa‟s! showed up at Applebee‟s to help with the North Tonawanda High School Academy of Business and Finance annual pancake breakfast fundraiser. Students from the academy helped to seat and serve breakfast-goers just a few weeks before Christmas. It was a well-attended fundraiser and the students enjoyed working with each other and the Applebee‟s staff. Students took turns dressing up as Santa to give away candy canes and exchange ho, ho, ho‟s!

NTHS Career Center The Career Center at NTHS contains an extensive amount of information on careers and virtually every college within the United States. Finding one‟s career path is an evolutionary process in which individuals need to examine their interests, academic abilities, and personal qualities to find vocational areas in which they will be successful. Our goal for our students during their high school years is that they begin to learn about themselves by examining what types of classes and activities they excel at and enjoy. Although choosing a potential major and a college can seem overwhelming, if students are able to answer these questions about themselves they will be better prepared to develop a plan to choose a college major

and a college at which they will experience academic and interpersonal success. Mrs. Maziarz, our Career Center Mentor, works closely with the high school counselors to provide a comprehensive v o c a t io n a l d e v e l o p m e n t program for every student at every grade level. Students are encouraged to come into the Career Center to meet Mrs. Maziarz and to utilize our Career Center, whether they are bound for college, employment, or the military. The Career Center has a wealth of information for the student who is unsure about his or her college or career plans and contains books, magazines, computer software programs, and college videos. Below is an outline for Career Center use which students should ideally follow:

9th grade: Students participate in a counselor-facilitated high school transition group with other 9th graders and are introduced to the Career Center and Mrs. Maziarz, the Career Center Mentor. They return to the Career Center to explore available resources; students are encouraged to sign up for at least two career speakers (English 9 & 10 teachers give extra credit for attending!).

10th grade: Students complete a vocational interest assessment and explore web-based college search programs. They are encouraged to attend a minimum of two career speaker presentations in the Career Center.

8

11 t h grade: Continued exploration of vocational interest areas & college research via the Choices program and available web-based college search programs.

12th grade: During the first semester, students finalize their list of colleges and complete their applications (assistance is available in the Career Center). Financial aid & scholarship information is available and students should remain updated on what is available.

Parents and members of the community are welcomed to use the resources available at our Career Center at any time. Please contact Mrs. Maziarz at 807-3653; we look forward to meeting with you!

Tell It To The Judge

Government class with Mrs. Cindric and Mr. Fezer is both exciting and hands-on. The guest speakers, as well as the follow-up and the field trips, have taught me first-hand that learning the elements of government can be both fun and interesting. One of our favorite field trips we attended was to the Lockport Federal Courts on November 29, 2012. We met

many officials in our legal system and we were able to see how the different court systems work. We first arrived at the Niagara County building in Lockport around 9:00 am. We were met at the door by a court appointed police officer who was assigned to us the entire time. Officer Pete Robinson went above and beyond to explain, in detail, what our class would experience on the field trip. As we entered the first courtroom, we sat down and Officer Robinson spoke to us. Officer Robinson told us we must stand for The Honorable Supreme Court Judge Richard Kloch. Judge Kloch came out of his chambers and answered any questions we had before the special sessions began. This was kind of neat because Judge Kloch was a former North Tonawanda High School graduate. Next Judge Kloch left the courtroom to put on his robe. We all stood as he approached the bench and then his court case began. This experience was both memorable and very insightful, seeing the legal system at it‟s finest. Judge Kloch was very professional and very caring. It was obvious that Judge Kloch is passionate about his profession.

the Math and English components earns the student an elective ½ credit. The 2010-11 school year marked our first offering of this course with fantastic results. NTHS students out-performed our neighbors, with mean scores higher than the New York State average! Although we were unable to offer this course for the 2011-12 school year due to budget constraints, it has returned for 2012-13, and we are expecting continued excellence from our students. We are very fortunate to have this course returned to “active-offered” status at NTHS for the 2013-14 school year. Please encourage your child to enroll in this valuable course. We deliver, within the school day, what could cost upwards of $300 in an after-school program offered by some other educational “agency”. SAT scores are a major component for college and university acceptance. Course selection sheets went home with students in early January. If your child is not already signed up to take this course, please have them indicate their interest to their counselor by making an appointment to see them. Counselors will be reviewing student course selections over the next few months to make sure they are scheduled for the classes they would like to take.

Officer Robinson then escorted us to the Legislative Branch where we talked in detail to Niagara County Legislator, Mr. William Ross. This was an informal question and answer session. We were then invited to meet the Honorable Judge John Batt (also a North Tonawanda High School graduate), the Family Court Judge. Judge Batt met us in his courtroom where he spent an incredible amount of time with our class. We were then allowed to sit on his bench, robe and all. One amazing thing that happened was that the Honorable Judge Kloch came to find us and spend more time with us in Judge Batt‟s courtroom. The highlight of our day was getting to spend time with the Honorable Judge Sara Farkas. Judge Farkas had come into our government class as a guest speaker. When she came to our school, she invited us to come to see her on the bench at the Lockport courthouse. Judge Farkas handles criminal cases such as murder, rape, etc. Judge Farkas‟s court room was amazing; however, a little intimidating when we first entered. The Honorable Judge Farkas made us feel right at home with her friendly demeanor. Although she did not have a case on her docket, Judge Farkas surprised all of us by allowing us to watch Honorable Judge Mathew Murphy‟s murder trial, already in session. This was an experience we will never forget. Much appreciation to our government teachers, Mrs. Cindric and Mr. Fezer, for taking us on this field trip and bringing in such outstanding community members as guest speakers in our class. We would also like to thank Mrs. Beverly Maziarz, the Secretary to The Honorable Judge Kloch, for scheduling the field trip. A special thank you to Niagara County Supreme Court Judges; The Honorable Judge Richard Kloch, The Honorable Judge John Batt, The Honorable Judge Sara Farkas and The

Honorable Judge Matthew Murphy. A special thank you to Court Officer Pete Robinson and Niagara County Legislator Mr. William Ross. As a government class, we learned a great deal about the functioning of our government and our court system, and came away with many memories as a result of this field trip. Thank you, Elliaggia Sobus III NTHS Senior

Did you know that NTHS offers a comprehensive SAT preparation class?

Our premier SAT Math/English Preparation course is open to students in grades 10 and 11. This one semester elective provides students with 10 weeks each of Math and English, taught by teachers from our Math and English departments who are able to show students‟ techniques that are proven to earn higher SAT scores. Students are supplied with their own SAT preparation workbook that provides ample practice and review. This course is in addition to the students‟ Math and English requirements; students “double-up” in Math and English for one marking period each. Successful completion of both

Québec 2013 Over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, French students traveled to Québec City, Canada to ex-perience French Canadian language and culture firsthand. The group, consisting of 43 students in levels 3, 4, and 5 along with Lucia Wilson and other chaperones Katie Feldman, Travis and Shannon Wilson, and parent John Jones, boarded an overnight coach bus on Friday evening and arrived in Québec City on Saturday morning. A walking tour of the city provided inter-esting historical facts and information and also allowed the students to get their bearings in the Old City. They saw the Parlement, Place Royale, Notre Dame des Victoires Church (the oldest on the continent!) and of course the stoic Chateau Frontenac Hotel surrounded by the ancient walls of Old Québec City. The group went to a sugar shack to enjoy a typical French Canadian dinner and to learn how maple syrup is made. They had the oppor-tunity to enjoy maple taffy made on snow! They also participated in traditional dancing, songs and learned to play the spoons as they enjoyed experiencing some of the “joie de vivre” firsthand. On Sunday, the group toured along the Beaupré Coast, stopping at Saint Anne de Beaupré Basilica (a miracle church), a woodcarver shop to hear some legends of Québec, and then went dog sledding. They also had a chance to try snowshoeing. Sunday evening was spent at a snow park where everyone enjoyed snow tubing, and snow rafting! Before leaving for home on Monday morning, the group visited the Hotel de Glace, a hotel that is con-structed completely out of ice and snow and the temperature inside is a constant -5 to -10 degrees Celsius! (No, we didn‟t sleep there!) Throughout the trip, students had the opportunity to put their French language skills into practice, as Québec City is 95% French-speaking. Our students represented themselves, our school, our community and our country in a very positive manner. We are grateful for the opportunity extended by parents, the school and the Board of Education for this worthwhile educational endeavor. Merci beaucoup!
