Ayles Grammar School Art Show Sat 24 Nov 10am-5pm AGS For the first time in the 19 year history of the Fair we will be exhibiting and selling some of our own senior boys’ works of art. 2011 was an outstanding year for A level Art at AGS, with nearly 80% of boys achieving A* - B grades. It is work produced by these talented students along with AS level work that will be available to view and purchase. Louise Tangi, Head of Art, believes “the Art Show provides an opportunity for the talented boys to interact with and be evaluated by the wider artistic community; this will help them to make the transition from being taught art as a subject to joining the commercial art world. All of the boys exhibiting have showed a genuine curiosity to know how the public and other artists will respond to their work.” We are encouraging all visitors to leave written appreciation of the boys work when they visit.

The Apadmi and Hiss Challenge We followed Rebecca Stephenson’s preparations, now read her amazing story. Since the last article she completed 3 more training swims. The first was a 2-way relay of Windermere. This was an overnight swim, taking 11.5 hours. Windermere was very challenging as no one was able to sleep. It started at 22.52, finishing at 10:20 and was fuelled by adrenaline. Having completed it though it felt like the channel was actually going to be possible…maybe even enjoyable. As swimming for an hour now seemed easy for Rebecca, she decided to make sure she was still challenged and signed up for a 10k swimming marathon as the second of her training swims. Having only swum 6k 3 weeks before she had a lot of training to do, and only 2 weeks to do it. But by the week of 10k she was able to swim 8.25k in 3 hours, and on the day she completed 10k in 4 hrs. Now the only training left was a sea swim, 3 days before the channel. Most of the team made it to this swim, off Bardsey Island in Wales – they were supposed to have a boat – but the coastguard wouldn’t let them go out due to there being a force 4 wind on its way – so they swam from the beach – in 1-2 m waves. This was a great experience, and they would find out later in the week just how important the experience would be!

Now for the actual channel swim, they arrived in Dover on the Tuesday night with a poor forecast so they were shocked to get the wakeup call at 7:20 the next morning telling them the swim was on. By 08:30 they were on the boat, and headed out to the starting beach, with the official start time as 09:21am. The first two hours were perfect – like swimming in a lake, the sun was out and it was warm, but around the 3rd hour the weather came in, and over the next 9½ hours it steadily got worse. Going from perfect weather to a force 2, then 3, 4, and all the way up to a force 7. Waves were crashing over them, and they were getting a serious beating, but they kept on moving forward. Finally after 12hrs 52 minutes they had made it to France. It was an incredible experience, especially under such arduous conditions. They were only 1 of 14 boats that attempted the channel swim on that day. All in all it was absolutely amazing with them raising over £3,500 for charity, and learning a lot on the way, especially Rebecca who has gone from a novice swimmer, to a successful channel swimmer, she now has the open water swimming bug and has decided to carry on swimming and complete a solo 1-way of Windermere next summer, at a distance of 11miles. Please continue to support them by donating via their website: www.channelswimmers.co.uk. Donations will be open until 14 December.

Wendover HS2 (WHS2) has written to the new Secretary of State asking for a meeting where he could explain the HS2 policy. The letter is on the WHS2 site. As yet, no response but he has been busy since DfT got its sums on the West Coast Main Line so wrong! On HS2, conservatives now seem to have a ”one motion” policy. HS2 is seeking property access to at least 20 sites in Wendover, and has sent out a third batch of letters. If you wish to discuss this, contact Antony Chapman, details below. The next Community Forum is 13 November. These futile events are superficial with a paucity of detail. WHS2 technical experts disagree strongly with the number-free noise presentation made last time. Very worrying is the need for multiple construction camps to hack out and cover the Wendover “green tunnel”. Wendover HS2 raised this issue with HS2 Ltd at the first of a series of meetings with them on 17 October. A better option is a full bored Chiltern tunnel; this is being pursued. Politically and economically a tunnel should not be more expensive than the alternatives. Judicial review is in December, but whoever loses will almost certainly appeal, so more funding may be needed in 2013. The Northern announcement has yet to be made - this year even? Compensation consultation also seems to have slipped badly. To help to save Wendover, why not make a small monthly donation? Even £5 a month will help, in favour of Wendover HS2 at Lloyds TSB, Sort Code 30-90-38, Number 30265860, or ask us for a form. It’s all spent on the campaign. Wendover Arm Canal The spring fed Arm was opened in 1797 as a navigable feeder essential to maintain the water level on the Chiltern Summit of the Grand Union Canal. The waterway from its outset had a history of leakage and was eventually closed to navigation around 1900. To maintain the flow of water to the summit reservoirs the 1.75 mile Drayton Beauchamp section, where leakage was most pronounced, was piped through to Wilstone and Tringford Reservoirs in 1912. It was, and remains to this day, pumped from these reservoirs to the summit level at Tringford Pumping Station. From here it flows the 1.25 miles of remaining open canal to Bulborne Junction on The Grand Union. In 1968 the first moves were made to re-water the canal and in 1989 the Wendover Arm Trust came in to being as a registered charity. Restoration commenced in 1997 exactly 200 years after the arm was opened and is proceeding in three phases. Phase 1 is now complete and Phase 2 is underway. Phase 3, the remaining 4 miles to the Wendover Basin will require dredging and bank strengthening to accommodate an increased water flow, navigation and a

s e r v i c e a b l e tow path. Due t o w e e d growth, and silting there is a g r a v e danger , i f noth ing is done, that The Canal and River Trust will have to resort

to piping to preserve the water flow. The Arm accounts for over 80% of all water entering the Wilstone, Startops and Tringford reservoirs, whose volumes are essential to the Grand Union Canal. There is concern amongst some Wendover residents that restoration works to the Arm will destroy habitation and wildlife. Lessons from other canals restored across the country and from the first phase of the Arm, clearly show these fears are unfounded for nature quickly re-asserts its dominance. To do nothing in the hope that the canal will remain essentially as it is, is not an option. If the owners are forced to pipe it, all that will be left is a dry ditch. The PC have decided to consider the matter in more detail to see how much support may be given to the Trust in the future.

Great news Wendover! The refurbishment of your parish church - St Mary's - is finally complete. For many of you, there will be a huge sigh of relief because you have been heavily involved in making decisions, meeting builders, allocating limited budgets and can at last relax! (until someone finds you another job of course!!) The last remaining task of replacing and upgrading the toilets in the adjoining ‘St Mary’s Centre’ is in process. We want to thank everyone for their support of this major project, which has taken the best part of two years to fundraise for, co-ordinate, project manage and support. The reason for this item is to remind Wendover what a wonderful space St Mary’s is for use by the whole community, and to consider ways in which you as villagers might consider making the most of this outstanding building. Contrary to what some may believe, St Mary’s is not a hiding place for religious zealots or only to be used by the ‘clique’ in God’s gang – but a fantastic and welcoming community resource, built over 700 years ago, and recently refurbished to ensure that maximum benefit can be brought to the whole village. Since reopening in April 2011 a whole host of groups and individuals have used the

building, in addition to the regular church services and activities. St Mary’s regularly hosts musical entertainment, including jazz musicians, Wendover Choral Society, a drumming group and of course the much loved Wendover Music which hosts four annual concerts featuring world class artists. The older generation are enjoying the upgraded space, and the U3A (The University of the Third Age) use St Mary’s as their meeting place because it is one of the largest and most accessible venues in the community. It may surprise some that the Scouts used the church weekly last winter and the AA meet in the building throughout the year. Since the refurbishment, St Mary’s has hosted two successful barn dances and started a regular film afternoon, using its new high definition audio and visual equipment. The complete calendar of events will soon be p u b l i s h e d o n o u r w e b s i t e (stmaryswendover.org.uk) but meanwhile, if you are looking for a meeting place, do consider St Mary’s. For bookings, please contact the St Mary’s Office – 01296 623123 or pop into the shop, @st mary’s, 11 The High Street Wendover.

Simon Carter comes to Town Simon Carter is on a slow but sure retail roll-out with a blend of own run and franchise shops with its latest edition coming to Wendover. Having opened their first store in Great Missenden just over a year ago, Fahra and James Mickleburgh seized the opportunity when local estate agent John Hinton brought 6 South Street to their attention. The brand has been in existence for 25 years and recently expanded into tailoring. This luxury English brand has been launched internationally into America, Canada, Japan, China and Australia, yet the stand alone shops have only really come into play this last 2 or 3 years. Simon Carter London have exclusive rights to many of the products on display and as the number of stores is limited, customers can be assured that their purchases will look as attractive and feel as different and as special with each wearing. Winter is upon us and Christmas not far behind so whether it’s a pair of socks for Dad or a funky stripe shirt to be worn on Christmas Day, equally perhaps a sparkling pair of cuff links made from Swarovski Crystal you will find it at Simon Carter, Wendover. We welcome you all and hope that you will accept us into your community and look forward to meeting you in the run up to year end and beyond.

Christine Barlow My journey to be a Games maker in London 2012 began when I saw an advert on the London Tube for volunteers way back in 2010. I applied on the web-form thinking that I did not stand a chance as I was not involved in the sporting world nor had I any specific sports related skills. Imagine my surprise when a year later I was invited to an interview at the Excel Centre in East London. I was welcomed warmly from my very first encounter with LOCOG. The interview, information giving and engagement processes were superb from start to finish. Shortly afterwards I was offered a role in the Venue Communications & Command centre (VCC) at Lord’s Cricket Ground. I soon learnt that every functional area has acronyms and that there were thirty-two of these. I was to join a total workforce of 70,000. We were told that this was the largest peacetime recruitment drive since the Second World War. I felt privileged to have this opportunity to make the games great and to be part of such a magnificent celebration of human skill and excellence in a world class city.

We had superb training in how to use radios, remember the dreaded acronyms, problem solve issues and had many practice sessions in radio protocol announcements, keeping

detailed log books and were based with the VCC team of fifteen in the same glass fronted control room as the Police, Security and Medical /Ambulance teams . We had fantastic team spirit, lovely helpful team leaders and great fun. The radios were most active on the monitoring groups for the field of play, pedestrian access, security, medica l , los t ch i ldren, s i te maintenance operat ions and

technical and press operations. We started the day at 6.30am with our regular radio bulletins and were often tempted to say “Good Morning Vietnam’’…instead of which we had to keep to protocol and wish everyone at Lord’s a Good Morning in our cheery voice!! In between the ten hour long shifts, I had a go at archery and met the coach of the South Korean Archery Team. They were just superb to watch and an Olympic world record was broken by a partially blind archer. There were many highlights not least of which was an in depth tour of Lord’s Cricket Ground, and developing good working relationships with fellow Games Makers from all over UK.

Makers Andy and Lynne Harris are a husband and wife team from Wendover who b o t h w o r k e d a s Gamesmakers at the London Olympics. Lynne was part of the Security Team working at the main Olympic Park. She really enjoyed the opportunity of working with people of all different ages and nationalities whose sole aim was to make the Games as enjoyable and pain-free an experience as possible for the general public. It was a real pleasure to go to ‘work’ each day knowing that it would be a long hard day, but truly fun and exciting as well. It was wonderful to play just a very small part in what turned out to be an amazingly successful Games. Working with the military was also extremely humbling – considering many of them had lost much of their leave, they were extremely professional and got on with the job without grumbling. It was certainly an eye-opener to hear first hand of some of their experiences out in Afghanistan. Andy worked with the ‘flags’ team. He helped with flag fitting, handed out flags to teams at

the opening ceremony and then provided flags for medal ceremonies at Earls Court and the Excel. He was amazed at the planning – the full-time team had spent two years getting every flag and anthem agreed by each of the 204 nations. Andy really enjoyed the whole event; it wasn’t perfect but everyone was so positive that stress levels were low. The down side was being

backstage and seeing how devastated some athletes were when they had failed to get the medal they wanted – and having to smile and chat to cheerful strangers on the 6.54am train when normally he would sink into anonymity behind the newspaper! Some back stage ‘insights’: you may have thought that the flame at the opening ceremony arrived by boat and was handed to Steve Redgrave who ran straight into the stadium...No, recorded two hours before! And attention to detail; what about getting 350 Gamesmakers in the stadium, two days before it opened, to enter every toilet and then flush them all at exactly the same time to make sure the water pressure held up!

Summer Update 2012 It has been a while since we last updated this generous community of ours about Mimi’s progress (Amelia Simpson) following her operation in the spring, fantastically paid for by you. Regular visits to her physiotherapist continue twice a week, including through the holidays, as well as regular hydrotherapy sessions. Mimi is slowly building her stamina and strength and various types of equipment have been bought to assist her. Mimi’s progress is slow but steady and it is important to remember that in the 12 months prior to the surgery she had been deteriorating. She was weak as she entered surgery and her challenge now is to strengthen her anti-gravity muscles and re-learn a new motor pattern, now that her spasticity has been reduced. Mimi had two wonderful weeks at “Playaway” at the beginning of the summer holidays paid for by donations. “Playaway” is a daily programme of fun activities including drumming, pottery and swimming which also incorporates her physiotherapy and occupational therapy based on conductive education. Mimi and her twin brother James celebrated their 10th birthdays in June

with a room full of lovely friends and Colonel Custard! Mimi was promised a party whilst in hospital in America and thanks to ever generous friends and family, that wish became a reality. Fundraising has continued with the very brave Tony Gill having his legs waxed, less painful beauty days and a very generous donation from the guests at The Butlers Cross Ball. Money was also raised by a local company called Grass Roots at their Jeans Day! Further afield Emulex in Wokingham have been regular supporters during these last few months. Lots of produce has been sold locally by adults and children too. Thanks are also due to Sally O’Halloran who made the most wonderful jubilee cake which was raffled at Whitewaters. Well done to the cubs and leaders of 1st Wendover Saturn Cubs who took part in a sponsored hike in Wendover Woods and raised over £200 for Mimi’s therapy. Wrist bands have proved very popular and together with collection tins, which children were invited to take home from John Hampden and Wendover CE Junior Schools, enough money was raised to buy Mimi a new tricycle. This tricycle in Mimi’s favourite colour, lilac,

and has proved very popular during the summer holidays. This specialised trike is part of the regular physical therapy Mimi needs each week. Fundraising is beginning to draw to a close as, incredibly, about £114,000 has been raised. We are working on the final push towards the £120,000 target for the Autumn. It’s hard to believe that we haven’t yet been fundraising a full year, but thanks to this community’s immense kindness we have raised enough to cover all Mimi’s costs until the end of 2014. Money raised for Mimi’s Mission is looked after by its Treasurer, Matt Ryan and his wonderful team at Numbers Ltd. Mimi’s Mission is a Trust, not a charity, and please don’t hesitate to send any questions about how this has been set up and run to the Treasurer. Thank you to everyone near and far who have made all this possible. Grateful thanks for all the donations and for the many anonymous benefactors. Wendover Community Trust has made a significant donation spread over the next two years, which is extremely kind. For Mimi’s Mum, there are no words to express adequately how grateful she is to each and every one of you.

Wendover MakeClub – Quilt Competition for Mimi’s Mission Wendover MakeClub is a group of mums from the local schools, plus some very hip Grannies too, who meet once a fortnight to share a love of modern sewing. We make quilts together for our families and friends and as expressions of our love and friendship to those who touch our lives. Many of us have kids who know and love Mimi, and as a group we wanted to help Mimi’s Mission by donating some of our time and skills. Back in January we turned out our fabric bags and began the laborious task of preparing more than 225 hexagons to turn into a quilt. Each woman donated her favourite fabrics to make hexagons, including some precious scraps from Mimi’s Nana Netia. There was no colour plan or prescription initially but as a result, a riot of colours was tamed into a wonderful rainbow pattern, and each woman was returned a row of hexagons to sew together, then pass to her neighbour, and ‘join on’. The finished quilt includes pieces of fabric that mean something to

every woman who helped to make it. The quilt travelled around the village through the spring slowly growing this most fantastic vibrant rainbow! The quilt is now on show in the window of Cromptons Interiors on High Street in Wendover. It represents the combined hours of work of 15 women, over a period of nearly a year. It has been made almost entirely by hand. A lucky person can win this quilt for the princely sum of two pounds! All we ask is that you accurately guess how much time the quilt took to make - 100% of the money raised will go to Mimi’s Mission. Simply purchase an entry card for £2.00 from Cromptons or wherever you see the Mimi’s Mission poster, make your guess and deposit your card in the Mimi’s Mission tin. Please contact Jane A t w e l l ( M i m i ' s M i s s i o n - [email protected]) or Debs M c G u i r e ( M a k e C l u b - [email protected]) for further information about the above. The quilt winner will be announced on Monday 17 December.

Misbourne 6th Form Open Evening Thursday 29 November 6.00 - 7.30pm Any prospective Year 12 students are very welcome to come and see the Misbourne School which is celebrating another set of superb examination results, both at A’ level and GCSE, and has also secured £2.5 million for some new buildings. At A level, 72% of students achieved A* – C grades, and all our students achieved qualification for university or higher education from over 24 sixth form subjects studied. At GCSE, 86% of our students achieved 5 + A* - C, with an overall average grade at almost a grade B. Robert Preston, the Head teacher, said “these fantastic results reflect the motivation and endeavour of my students and staff. I am so very proud of all my students but there is even better to come.” There were so many successes including 25 students who achieved perfect 100% scores in their external examinations, which is unprecedented. In recognition of the many achievements at The Misbourne, the School has secured £2.5 million for some new purpose built buildings. Robert Preston said “these are exciting times and we continue to provide the best education for all our students and prepare them for tomorrow’s world.’

Gateway School The Gateway School in Great Missenden is the first primary school in the UK to install a DOC® AED device, the world’s only fully automated defibrillator. This lifesaving device could increase the survival rate of anyone suffering a cardiac arrest in the school by up to 90%. Cardiac arrest is a very real issue for young and old and Gateway School is leading a UK-wide drive for the installation of defibrillators in all schools and public places. The defibrillator installed at Gateway provides voice-led instructions to the user, meaning anyone, trained or not, can potentially save a life. “We have a duty of care to anyone in our school, whether pupil, staff, parent or visitor. The DOC AED will ensure that crucial life support can be administered in the case of a cardiac arrest, whether in the school, on the sports field, playground or on the walk to or from school. “We hope also to extend the use of the defibrillator to the wider community in Great Missenden. If someone was to suffer a cardiac arrest close to the school,” explained Steven Wade, head teacher at Gateway School.”

Bulk Oil Buying Scheme

Community Impact Bucks has set up a new scheme in Buckinghamshire to help purchasers of central heating oil to make savings by buying in bulk. By bringing communities together throughout Buckinghamshire it is possible to make the most of the joint buying power of schemes operating in 7 counties across the country. Savings can be made and passed directly to people whose fuel costs are high simply because they do not have a gas supply and have to use oil for cooking and heating.

To join the scheme, an annual membership fee is paid which will cover as many or as few oil orders as you need during the course of the year. The minimum order that can be placed is 500 litres.

New members are eligible to place an order in the same month they join the scheme, as long they submit their application form and pay their membership fee before the ‘ordering deadline date', which is usually the last Wednesday of the month. Memberships fees are £20 for domestic users, £30 for community buildings and £100 for business and this is done through C o m m u n i t y I m p a c t B u c k s [email protected] or 01296 744736

How it works Contact your local coordinator and let them know how much oil you want to order. Please allow up to a maximum of two weeks for delivery of oil from the monthly ‘ordering deadline date'. (In most cases delivery will be sooner.) Once a month the local coordinator lets Community Impact Bucks know the total oil needed for the area. At the end of each month, the bulk oil purchase is negotiated by the Community Impact Bucks oil buyer. Coordinators are then informed the date to expect delivery and how much it will cost and they pass the information on to you. You pay the supplier direct for the oil they deliver.

Does your community have a local coordinator? Wendover now has a local co-ordinator, Andy Trueman who can be contacted on 01296 622122 or [email protected]. So if you would like to find out more about the scheme feel free to get in touch.

New Sailing Boat for Scouts Four years ago 1st Wendover Scouts took to the water at Aylesbury Sailing Club with a small fleet of 4 Pico sailing boats. During that time over 200 young people had the chance to learn to sail. Last year we decided we needed a larger boat, so we wrote to the Wendover Community Trust to ask for support with this project, which we were then lucky enough to receive. So in February this year we made for the Dinghy Show. Not being a sailor myself it was an interesting day listening to talk about jibs, shakles and lots of other bits and, luckily for me, Russell our sailing instructor understood the jargon. We settled upon a Hartley Gull, a UK sailing boat suitable for up to four people. The boat was hand made this summer and took slightly longer than initially thought because of the boats being built for the Olympics. It arrived at the beginning of September and I was the first to paddle it across the lake! The scouts had their chance to sail the boat at our weekend activity camp at the end of September. The boat also got a few looks from others at the club who own older versions. Sailing now features as one of the many activities the troop has to offer. This is made possible by the volunteers that help and the continued support of Wendover Community Trust so it seems apt to name the boat 'Trust'.

Wendover Tennis and Squash Club The Club has received funding from the Bucks Olympic Legacy Project to run a course focusing on introducing tennis to Students 14 to 18 years of age who are not members of a tennis club and who have either never played or only played tennis at a young age. The course is FREE, all equipment is provided and runs each Thursday 4:00 – 5:00pm at the Tennis Club on Dobbins Lane. For details please contact our Head Coach Dan Anthony at [email protected]. The Squash and Racketball winter leagues are now in stride with the addition of our annual team Racketball round robin tournament. Full details can be found at www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk.

News from Wendover Health Centre 01296 623452 Changes to our usual Opening Hours We will close at 1pm on Thursday 22 November for staff training.

Booking an Appointment If you want to see a doctor or nurse and your problem is not urgent, you can book an appointment either by calling us on 01296-623452 or on line at www.westongrove.com. (To make on line bookings you must first register in person at reception: please see the website for details.) Appointments may be booked up to 4 weeks in advance; we do not hold back rout ine appointments for booking on the same day. Our aim is that you should not have to wait more than 1 week for a rou t ine appo in tm ent , a l though sometimes the wait is longer especially when a specific doctor or nurse is requested.

For urgent problems please call us as soon as possible – our lines open from

8am to 6.30pm every working day (outside these times calls are diverted to Bucks Urgent Care).

A receptionist will ask you for information about the problem; this is important for assessing the level of priority for your call in relation to others and helps ensure that the most appropriate person deals with your problem. You will be called back by one of the duty doctors or nurses to discuss the problem in depth and agree a course of action. Many problems can be dealt with on the phone, but if necessary you will be offered an appointment to be seen on the same day. If the problem is a continuing one every effort will be made to arrange an appointment with your usual doctor if she or he is available.

Appointments are timed at 10 minute intervals. In order to make the best use of the time available, when you see the

doctor please try and be clear about what it is you are concerned about and what you are expecting from the appointment. Please tell the doctor at the beginning of the consultation if you have more than one problem you wish to discuss. It may not always be possible for all of your problems to be dealt with in one appointment, and the doctor may then ask you to return on another occasion.

If you are eligible and have missed your allocated session please attend then or call Reception to arrange an appointment. Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club completed their season at the end of September with a match at Witchell. The President’s XI scored 197 for 8 in 40 overs with Nick Heafford scoring 42 and Matt Winterburn 53, whilst Tom McPartlan was the most successful bowler for the Chairman’s XI with 3 for 19. Philip Seabrook took 3 for 35 at the top of the order before George Robinson’s 29 and Bob’s Glue’s 31 off 30 balls got the Chairman’s reply back on track, but it was Tom Grace with 45 that held the innings together. However, when he was 8th out on 163, the innings quickly folded to leave the President’s team victorious by 28 runs. After the game President Tony Mogford presented the Season’s Awards:

The 1st XI finished 9th out of 10 teams in the Mid Bucks League Premier Division, whilst the 2nd XI finished a very creditable 4th in Division 2 and ended the league season in style by beating the then leaders Phoenix OB by 35 runs. George Robinson scored 112 and followed it up with 4 for 59, supported by Will Dean’s 55 and a strong all-round bowling and fielding performance.

The U11 team belatedly played their Aylesbury League final in September, losing to a very strong Aston Rowant side. Harrison Cornick took 2 wickets and threw down the stumps for a run out, but Rowant still made 290 in their innings of this “pairs” game. Ben Pope and Jacob Davis made an excellent start to Wendover’s run chase before the opponents’ superiority began to tell and we closed on 219.

Preparations are now underway for the Club’s annual 50/50 Auction on Saturday 17 November, which is an important fundraiser as well as being an eagerly anticipated village event. Lots go under the hammer from 11.30 a.m. at the Wendover Memorial Hall.

Rotary goes Bust Many thanks to all who have donated a total of 6 300 bras to the local Rotary Club BUST project through the Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop. The collection continues so please keep them coming.

Wendover Choral Society Saturday 1 December, 7.30pm St Mary’s Some background to Christmas in Venice: 2012 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Gabrieli and so the Christmas concert will be a liturgical reconstruction of Christmas Vespers in St Marks Venice as it might have been performed in 1640. It will include music by Gabrieli, Monteverdi and my second cousin, twelve times removed, Giovanni Bassano (1558-1617) who worked with Gabrieli and Monteverdi as Maestro di Concerto at San Marco. We will be accompanied by an instrumental group of cornetti, sackbuts and theorbo. The Latin title of Vespers - Evensong, to Anglicans - on Christmas Eve is VESPRI IN VIGILIA NATIVITATIS DOMINUM. For the Doge and the Venetian aristocracy, Vespers on Christmas Eve was the first attendance required in the Basilica of San Marco - the building which housed the saint's remains. Francesco Sansovino the Venetian historian refers to these ceremonial occasions for which the chapels surrounding the High Altar of San Marco were filled with benches and chairs to accommodate the throng of dignitaries. The Doge and the Signoria processed from the Ducal Palace into San Marco itself for this rich and amazing service.

“Contact the Elderly” in Wendover This month sees the launch of a local “Contact the Elderly” group, a registered national charity based on a simple concept that makes a big difference to the lives of the older, more isolated members of our community. Once a month a team of local volunteers regularly hosts a Sunday afternoon tea party for those who are less mobile and whose families are not close at hand. “Contact the Elderly” offers an opportunity to spend a convivial afternoon together in the comfort of a volunteer’s home, to meet local friends and to enjoy companionship in a personal and welcoming atmosphere. Volunteer drivers collect and deliver guests to the event. Typically guests are over seventy-five years of age without easy access to transport and who are living on their own with only limited contact with their families. The Lee/Wendover group encompasses villages situated between Chesham and Wendover, and Great Missenden and Cholesbury - anywhere within a fifteen minute car ride of The Lee. Anyone who feels that a life could

be enriched by becoming a regular guest of their local “Contact the Elderly” group should please refer that person to the coordinator, Anthea Hartley, who says “Having spent this last year volunteering with the Chesham branch of Contact the Elderly, I am so

impressed with the enthusiasm of both its guests and its hosts that I have decided to start a local group in W end o ver a n d surrounding villages. I t d e v e l o p s fr iendships and enriches the lives of a l l w h o a r e involved.”

Thanks to the generosity of guests at a local lady’s “significant birthday” party recently, donations were very gratefully received ensuring that this project gets off to a flying start. Thanks also to those volunteers who have already signed-up to the team with their promises of help. Local coordinator: Anthea Hartley tel: 01494 837372 Head Office tel: 020 7240 0630 or 0800 716 543. 1st Wendover Guides to close? For the past 16 years the 1st Wendover Guides has given hundreds of local girls the opportunity to have fun, challenge themselves and develop and gain confidence in a safe environment. The current leader is retiring and unless a new leader is found this popular unit is facing the possibility of closure at Christmas. This will affect not only the current Guides but also the Rainbows and Brownies in Wendover, Halton, Weston Turville and Stoke Mandeville who will find it harder to stay in Guiding when they reach 11 years old. The Guides offers a great opportunity for girls aged between ten and fourteen to try many outdoor activities, new challenges, crafts and badge work. The girls are very enthusiastic and enjoy coming to the weekly meetings. There are adult volunteers who help plan events and assist in running the meetings but a new leader is required. Previous experience is not needed as all necessary training will be given. If you enjoy working with young people and are interested in volunteering to take on this very rewarding role, or

Clock Tower Fundraising Further to the article on the back page of the October edition of Wendover News, Wendover Parish Council would like to thank two recent events which have started the fund raising ball rolling. At the Love Me Do 50th anniversary event on Saturday 6 October, the remains of a drinks “kitty” provided just over £10. After their Harvest Supper on Friday 12 October, The Wendover Society kindly contributed just over £400 - the proceeds from their Raffle.

Charity Choice I must take issue with several of the comments voiced by Val Brown (Charity Shops in Wendover - Oct issue). She says ‘it is regrettable that both our charity shops should be Hospice Shops as it narrows the choice....’ but people who want to target their donations still have the opportunity to shop in other charity shops in nearby Aylesbury, Amersham or Great Missenden, or to make direct donations to the charity of their choice. She also suggests that a ‘proliferation of such shops indicates a struggling shopping centre’. I would retort that it is a sign of a caring community, of which, as a Charity Shop volunteer, I am proud to be a part.

Other traditional fund raising activities will include a Santa’s Grotto for the lower school then in the New Year there will be Valentine Roses and Egg Hunts. This year, all year 12s will hold a leadership role within the school, often leading clubs for lower school pupils such as cookery, chess, textiles, etc. They will also be involved in a variety of community activities.

The deputies - Emma and Jamie - will run the School Council with 2 representatives from each year.

We wish them all a very fruitful and enjoyable year.

The sixth form always has to choose two charities to support and this year they are: locally Helen & Douglas House and nationally the Teenage Cancer Trust. They now have to arrange their own fund raising activities eg a Santa Dash round the school field when thoughts turn to the Festive Season. They are already planning decorating the sixth form Common Room for Christmas as well. The whole school is looking forward to other traditional fund raising activities such as Freaky Friday for the lower school and a Bake Off competition with sales as well. There is usually a mufti day after half term to add to the collection. Last year’s Charity Help Week raised over £2½K, a hard and very worthy target to beat!

The John Colet Head Boys and Girls were voted into office on their return from AS exams in June. Their first task was to organise the annual Fun and Fancy Dress year 12 Sports Day which brought everyone together and reinforced their new tutor groups. They then turned their attention to helping with new year 7s when they came for their induction day in July. On the first day of the new academic year, they were busy helping with individual school photos and the daunting task of talking to the whole school in the Sports Hall. This means that now they are easily recognised by everyone.

Local Face: Tony Mogford Tony Mogford has been a familiar face in Wendover since 1952 when he took the tenancy of Bank Farm from the fairly new Lord of the Manor Lionel Abel–Smith. This friendship led to 35 years as the chairman of W endover Community Trust (now the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust). Within 2 years of arrival he had won the heart of, and married, Mary Pheby, “the girl next door” who lived in Brook House. They are blessed with two children, Jacky and Edward, and 5 grandchildren. Tony has always seen himself as a farmer although his family background is not agricultural. At Berkshire College of Agriculture he was the first student President then Governor for over 50 years including 10 years as Chair and now Honorary. This pattern of service to the community followed by glowing accolades has been the pattern of his life. This includes 25 years in Local Government including Aylesbury Rural District Council through becoming the first chair of Aylesbury Vale District Council and the opening of the Civic Centre (recently demolished). Through him, AVDC was among the first Districts in Bucks to have sheltered accommodation. He then moved on to Bucks County Council, retiring in 1985.

For long he stood as an independent unopposed then it became imperative to join a party to have any influence. In addition he did stints with Buckingham Development Corporation, Thames Valley Police, Aylesbury Festival of the Arts and Bucks Association for Mental Health. Tony has always supported education and projects involving the young. This led to chairing the governing bodies of Green Park Youth Training Centre, John Colet School and Aylesbury College. This included extending the Colet playing field when there was a threat from the proposed bypass. It also meant fighting very hard to rebuild the school when the original structure started to rot. Tony formed the Oxon & Bucks Branch of the Prince’s Trust as the first chair and was granted two Royal warrants. In 1999 Tony received the MBE for education, and work in the community of Buckinghamshire. Meanwhile he continued to be busy helping people and organisations in Wendover as well. He joined the Sports Supporters Club and took over from Bill Brook and Oliver Floyd. They ran a local mini football “pools” keeping 50%

of the weekly pot. Tony encouraged the Lord of the Manor to make available to the T e n n i s a n d S qu as h C l ub valuable building land in Dobbins Lane. When Ca p ta i n T om Barlow bought Witchell from the Lord of the Manor to give to Wendover (in the same way that his father had given Hampden Meadow) it was Tony who helped to level the uneven ground with his farm equipment. The first early 1960s Carnival to raise money for the swimming pool was held on their field in Hale Lane. Tony and Mary gave full support to the annual Gymkhana. Later Tony supported fully the covering of the pool which is now named after him. He led the successful refurbishment of Wendover Memorial Hall and most recently helped with the refurbishment of St Anne’s Hall. His latest honour was to be awarded the 2012 Presidents’ Prize by the Wendover Society of which he was a founder member and vice-chair for 17 years, gratefully received last month.

View from the Chair Looking forward to interesting times, the Vice Chair and I, with the chairs of committees, are already planning: Finance, chaired by Bob Lewis, will be working soon with committee chairs compiling the budgets/precept for next year as well as ensuring the auditors remain happy. Staffing, ably chaired by Karen Saunders, is straightening out and tweaking procedures to ensure the Parish Council staff are happy in whatever line of work they are undertaking. Jill Bottomley is Acting Clerk, with Sue as her Assistant. Judith, Peter and Ian run the CIO and deal with allotment management, the Quiz and the Market. Andy and Tony look after the Parish grounds. We have engaged Ines Respini-Jones, a Wendover resident, as our interim HR Consultant, to ensure that staffing issues are kept in line with current law and good practice. Amenit ies , one of the larger Committees, has two major projects. The Clock Tower restoration will begin very soon. Fundraising has started and Tom Walsh, Chair of Amenities, has set up www.wendoverclocktower.org.uk to help promote this project. The Manor

Waste improvement is also an ongoing development being project managed by another local person, Steve Bowles. A further project is the improvement of the London Road Play area to ensure safety is not compromised. Planning, led by Oliver Statham, will change as Localism takes a hold. With other councillors involved on outside bodies we have a busy, vibrant and enthusiastic set of councillors and staff all working for the people of Wendover.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

Employment Tribunal Fiona Lippmann, who resigned as Clerk earlier this year, made a claim against the Parish Council for Constructive Dismissal. The judgement of the Employment Tribunal that followed was that her claim of constructive dismissal failed and was dismissed. Further information will be posted on the website.

Allotments We currently have 2 plots available to rent at our London Road site. Now is the perfect time to get started and be prepared for next season.

Macmillan Coffee Morning £48.83 was raised for Cancer Support in the Clock Tower on Friday 28 September. This was a perfect opportunity for staff and councillors to meet informally over coffee and cakes.
