Advanced Criminal Jury Selection MARY F. MORIARTY, ESQ., Minneapolis, Minnesota

Mary F. Moriarty is an expert on criminal jury selection, and has lectured across the country on that and a variety of criminal defense topics. A trial lawyer and supervisor in the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office, she will provide an advanced primer on jury selection issues, problems, techniques and strategies applicable to all types of criminal trials. Mary Moriarty had been a public defender in Minneapolis for all of six weeks when she had her first felony suppression hearing. She prepped diligently, argued tenaciously, and lost both the motion and the subsequent trial. She was right about the issue at hand, however, and a couple of years later when the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari, Moriarty—who can laugh about it now—couldn’t be pried away from her caseload to attend oral arguments in Minnesota v Dickerson. “Next time,” she told herself. Fast-forward two decades: Moriarty has not had another occasion to argue before the high court, but she has tried a dozen murders and countless other serious felony cases—including a number that set important state-court precedents. In the process, she has acquired a national profile as a gifted courtroom advocate with a talent for training others in the creative, powerful trial skills she uses to secure acquittal after acquittal. The training director and the managing attorney of the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office’s Adult Division, Moriarty has taught attorneys, judges, investigators, and paralegals in every region of the country. She serves on the faculty of public defender trial schools in Minnesota, Kentucky, Illinois, and Louisiana. She is a core faculty member of Gideon’s Promise. Her interactive curriculum models have been widely copied by other trainers. Her NACDL presentation, “Tuning Your Ear to the Off-Key,” on prosecutorial misconduct, was featured in the April 2009 issue of The Champion.

Trying a Homicide Case, Dealing with Prosecution Experts and Junk Science, and Lessons from the Casey Anthony Case

JOSE BAEZ, Coral Gables and Orlando, Florida Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder because of the work of her lawyer, Jose Baez, whose tireless pretrial preparation, case theme development and courtroom execution dismantled what all the “experts” thought was a slam dunk case. A nationally known trial lawyer, lecturer, and an expert in media relations, he will discuss trying a homicide case, with particular focus on dealing with junk science experts, and the Anthony defense itself. Jose Baez - Few trial lawyers have ascended to national prominence as quickly and spectacularly as Jose Baez. Known for his passion, hard work and brilliant courtroom strategies, Jose Baez has brought a new hard hitting style of trial work to the courtroom. Jose A. Baez is an experienced trial attorney who has represented clients in the full range of Criminal and Civil cases. While he is best known for "shocking the world" in what Time Magazine dubbed the "Social Media Trial of the Century" in the Casey Anthony murder trial for which he won an acquittal, Mr. Baez has had continued success in and out of the courtroom. In 2011, he flew to Aruba and helped free millionaire businessman Gary Giordano from prison in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner. He was named "Lawyer of the Year for 2011" by LawyersUSA magazine and also named as one of the "Top 100 Trial Lawyers" for both 2011, 2012, and 2013 by the National Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Baez is also well known for representing many victims of negligence and serious crimes. In 2012 he began representing multiple victims in the "Dark Knight" shooting tragedy in Aurora Colorado. He also represented a rape victim in one of Chicago's highest profile negligent security cases. Mr. Baez's practice has a particular emphasis on representing clients in complex and high profile criminal and civil cases. However, many of Mr. Baez's successes never make it into the spotlight as he has represented celebrities and athletes who prefer anonymity. This is where his knowledge and experience with the media helps best serve his clients. Few attorneys understand the importance of media relations and its inner workings. Mr. Baez has gained extensive experience in successfully defending scientifically/medically intensive criminal and civil cases, including shaken baby syndrome, pediatric head injuries, appeals, sexual assault cases with medical evidence, and cases involving DNA evidence. Additionally, his experience extends to civil cases that involve suing some of the biggest insurance companies in the country. Once called "the most hated lawyer in America", Jose A. Baez wears that title like a badge of honor. Despite personal criticism serving his clients is his highest priority. In order to more effectively cross examine many forensic experts, Mr. Baez finds it important to learn the science himself, that is why he has completed hundreds of hours of training dedicated to areas of forensic

He is also on the faculty at Harvard Law School where he teaches trial techniques to second and third year law students in what is considered one of Harvard Law School's most popular courses. Mr. Baez is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and is extremely active in various charitable endeavors in the Hispanic community.
