St. Kieran Catholic Church Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.” — Luke 6:2021a Notes from Fr. John TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The one who trusts in the LORD is like a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8). Psalm — Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1). Second Reading — Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20). Gospel — Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing (Luke 6:17, 20-26). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 4:1-15, 25; Ps 50:1, 8, 16bc-17, 20-26; Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Gn 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10; Ps 29:1a, 2, 3ac-4, 3b, 9c-10; Mk 8:14-21 Wednesday: Gn 8:6-13, 20-22; Ps 116:12-15, 18-19; Mk 8:22-26 Thursday: Gn 9:1-13; Ps 102:16-21, 29, 22-23; Mk 8:27-33 Friday: 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-3a, 4-6; Mt 16:13-19 Saturday: Heb 11:1-7; Ps 145:2-5, 10-11; Mk 9:2-13 Sunday: 1 Sm 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; Ps 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-13; 1 Cor 15:45-49; Lk 6:27-38 T oday we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today's Gospel we get Luke’s version of the Beatitudes. Luke speaks to the poor and disenfranchised and gives them hope. Jesus tells the people that the world as they know it will be turned upside down and those who have will be found wanting and those in need will be filled. I think there are a few lessons being offered in the readings today. The first lesson is that we need to trust in the Lord as stated in the Prophet Jeremiah. The second is that everything we have is blessing from God and we should be sharing it with those in need. Two goals for good living. Over the last month we have had a large number of requests for weddings at St. Agnes and St. Kieran. And with Valentine’s Day this past week, I thought it would be a good time to write about marriage in the Catholic Church. First and foremost, the Church sees marriage as a sacrament. A sacrament is a visible sign of God’s presence in the world. So, the Church believes that God enters into the marriage and offers grace to the couple as they live out their vows. That is why marriage is not taken lightly. For those wishing to get married at St. Agnes or St. Kieran we ask you to call well ahead of when you hope to get married. Nine months to a year ahead is optimal. Always make sure the church has the date you are looking for available before you put down a deposit on a venue. After that there will be a meeting with one of the priests and then a couple of meetings with a marriage prep coordinator. Then after a bit of marriage prep coordinator. Then after a bit of paperwork you will be ready for the big day. We look forward to serving you at this exciting time. Give us call. The Women’s Welcome Retreat has had a great reception in the parishes over the past two weeks. So far over thirty women have signed up to attend the retreat on March 9th and 10th. The leaders of the weekend are now in their final prepa- ration as well, so please keep them and Fr. Tom in your prayers. Please call the St. Agnes or St. Kieran office if you are interested in joining the group. Fr. Tom has also scheduled an informational meeting for men who might be interested in a men’s welcome retreat. That meeting will be held on Thursday March 7th at 7:00 PM in the library meeting room at St. Kieran and is open to men of St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Please consider attending this informational meeting. St. Agnes School registration is now in full gear. If you are looking to enroll your children in a Catholic school next year I encourage you to call Karen Hamilton at 756-2333 and schedule an ap- pointment for a tour. We have a great educational program and are often able to offer assistance for tuition. The sooner you apply the better the chances are in obtaining financial assistance. Become a Wildcat and become part of a 111-year tradition. Thanks to the St. Kieran Women’s club for hosting the Route 66 presentation and the “Singing Cowboy” last Saturday. I heard it was a great evening. I appreciate all the work the Women do to bring life to the parish.

WELCOME FOR MEN The call to grow in faith is not just an invitation extended to the women of our parish. Men have just as much a responsibility and an opportunity to discover how Jesus has been and continues to be active in their lives. There will be an information meeting for men on Thursday, March 7, 7 pm in St Kieran's school library meeting room. The WELCOME retreat process will be explained, and men will be asked to consider how it can be a blessing for them and for our parish. Listen, and if you hear God inviting you to experience something more in your relationship with Him and other men, come to this meeting. Feel free to contact Fr Tom for more information.

2019 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me…and share the Word”

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word.”

Once we reach our parish goal of $21,568 in paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

PEACEFUL-PRAYERFUL VIGIL TO HELP MOTHERS AND BABIES

There is a Planned Parenthood clinic in Flossmoor at 19831 S. Governors Highway, drawing expectant mothers from a wide area of south and southwest Chicago, its suburbs as well as northwest Indiana for abortion services. A 40 Days for Life vigil is a peaceful public response to abortion. It will take place on the public right of way in front of the Flossmoor Planned Parenthood beginning Wednesday, March 6th through Sunday April 14th. Parking is along the south side of 198th St, ½ block north of the vigil location. The vigil will be maintained 12 hours each day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will be a quiet, peaceful prayer presence on the public right of way in front of the clinic. It will bring an altar of prayer to the site where baby’s lives are ended and mother’s lives are harmed. If signs are held or displayed, they can only express positive, supportive and kind sentiments. No shockingly graphic or confrontational signs are allowed. The peaceful prayerful presence of 40 Days for Life campaigns in front of abortion clinics have led to many abortion clinics closing. Expectant mothers find hope and seek out resources when they see people who truly care for them and their circumstances, leading to a decline of abortions during the vigils, saving lives. Also many clinic workers including managers have left Planned Parenthood employment when their hearts were changed as a result of the prayerful witness during the vigil. Individuals and church groups can sign up for one hour, the same hour every week, several hours, or entire days. To sign up for vigil hours online go to https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/Flossmoor and click on “Sign Up for Vigil Hours”. For more information on 40 Days for Life go to https://40DaysforLife.com

St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for families who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or homebound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694.

P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
