WOW!!!!!! 2017 has started off with a bang, and looking to be a fun year. Let me start off by

saying we will have a fun year but it will only happen with YOU being there!

January started out exciting with our "Kick out the Pres" meeting. It was sad to see Ken Peto

go but 2017 means a new year and different events. We had a decent attendance for the

election of a our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Lance Evans and his Lady Debbie, and

instillation of club presidents. Our big effort for January was the Official Visit of our

Illustrious Potentate at Manzo's Banquet Hall. Our total attendance was close to 100 people

between us, Lake County, the Golf Club and the Divan. And from all that I have heard,

everyone had a great time and was impressed with the food.

Hard to believe but February is almost over! Our director’s meeting on the first Thursday at

Rose Garden Restaurant in Elk Grove Village was kind of small, but it is a busy season, and

our Sweet Heart dinner on the 16th had great attendance. The food was excellent from what

I heard. (Sorry, had to work that evening.) Special thanks to Erick and his Lady Lisa for

putting everything together! Also thank you Rupert for running the meeting in my absence.

Sooooo, where does that leave us??? Upcoming events!!! Let's have a great attendance at

our board meeting in March, also a large showing for the St. Pat's dinner on the 17th! Yes

Nobles and ladies you read that right, Friday the 17th NWSSC will be joining Medinah for

St. Patties day. Hope to see you there!

Your President, Alan E. Kulevich

Several weeks ago, while reading the most recent issue of the Scottish

Rite magazine, I came across the name Ed Prentiss. Brother Ed (Spring

class of 1942) was mentioned as the actor who played the part of

Constans in the 32nd degree. If you don’t know where this is going,

please “stay tuned.”

Ed Prentiss was a famous radio actor who played many different parts in

Old Time Radio from the studios located in Chicago. He was born in

Chicago and attended the University of Iowa.

Prentiss is most famous for his role as Captain Midnight, an ace

aviator and commander of the Secret Squadron. Captain Midnight was a

man of mystery, a hero whose job was so important that not even his

superiors knew his identity. Listeners knew his real identity and

listened faithfully as he engaged the sinister, “Ivan Shark.” By 1940,

more than a million kids joined the Captain Midnight Flight Patrol.

They received an ‘official junior pilot’s application card, and a

burnished bronze medal of membership. Squadron members were offered

secret decoder badges and rings which they used to decode secret

messages that were incorporated into the story line each day.

As the United States entered World War II, Captain Midnight and his

crew did battle with the enemy. The villains were now Nazis and “Japs”

at home and abroad. Homefront shows were filled with sinister plots in

which Squadron planes took off for England. The shows were filled with

elaborate battle action and credible sound effects: machine-gun fights

in which Captain Midnight manned the gun.

The most notable sponsor of Captain Midnight was Ovaltine (a

carryover from Little Orphan Annie). Pierre Andre, the announcer,

teased the audience about what would happen “tomorrow” in the further

adventures of Captain Midnight.

Brother Prentiss starred in many other radio and television shows and a

handful of movies. He died in 1992 at the age of 83 in Los Angeles.
