Newsletter 10 Veritas Omnia Vincit - Truth Conquers All From the Principal 28 June 2012 Once again our photographic record of the learning tells the story of a Carncot education. I was so sorry to miss the soiree due to the very sad passing of my friend’s son. It is an evening to which I always look forward with great anticipation and I hear that it was a sensation, once again. How exciting that we have a quintet now! My thanks to Paul Stein and others who recorded the beautiful memories for us. As I write, Market Day is in its final preparation and, despite the rain, I am sure that we will have a successful culmination to our new Business Studies/Young Enterprise unit. The girls have learnt a great deal about product development and how companies operate. We appreciate the in put of our guest speakers in this process. The day is all the more fun with our 5+ a day mufti day. The girls and staff have made a great effort to dress up, and we must thank Jenna and Roma for this initiative. It is sad that Mrs Murphy cannot be here to see her girls market their soy candles. We offer her our deepest sympathy in the passing of her mum last week. In the sporting arena, we may be working hard to get those wins at winter sport, but we have done well at the interschool events. Congratulations to all girls who have represented our school and especially those who have achieved in the top ten placings. I am also excited to hear that so many girls are trialling for places in representative hockey teams and I wish them the very best! I must say that I have really enjoyed watching the Saturday and Monday sports games, and I feel proud of those girls who give their all to every game. Ms Sinclair, Mrs Cotton and Ms Rivoallan have worked incredibly hard once again to bring us an outstanding Art Exhibition. This has truly challenged the girls’ creative thinking and we are all looking forward to the final product. It has been an eventful term, and I know that both girls and staff will be looking forward to a well-earned break, even as we turn our thoughts to the academic, cultural and sporting events of Term 3: the Olympics, the Art Exhibition, the School Production, the Science Fairs and Mathex, to name a few. My very best wishes for a safe and happy holiday! Musical Soirée On Wednesday, we hosted our first musical soirée for the year. It was a most enjoyable evening and was well attended. We were entertained by a variety of wonderful musical performances, including the amazing Huntley Jazz band. Mrs Wheeler, who trains the band, was a Carncot girl and her mum was the infant teacher during the 1970s. Many of the singers dressed up and danced as well as sang for us. It was a great opportunity for the girls to show parents and friends their progress so far this year. During interval, we had a lovely supper provided by Mrs Viles, Mrs Williamson and Mrs Osborn. To conclude the night, we thanked our music teachers. We are most grateful to all the teachers and helpers who made the night so successful. We look forward to the soirée at the end of the year. Rene Williamson, Music Co-ordinator

Young Enterprise Day On the 26th of June, our school decided to have a Young Enterprise Day to support Barnardos. We had the challenge of producing a product or products to sell on the day. The products turned out amazing, from soy candles, house badges, to hairstyles and board games. We are going to donate our profits to Barnardos, except the products on back order. Our overall profit has yet to be collected and we probably wont find out the overall total until next term, but we all know that all the students have done very well. Since Young Enterprise Day went so well, teachers have said it might become an annual event. This is a great chance to start thinking of ideas for next year to help raise money for Barnardos. By Sidney and Mika, Year 7

5+ a day Mufti Day On Tuesday 26th of June the Carncot girls from Year 1-8 sold their personalised products. Not only did we have great success with our market day, but everybody in the school dressed up in a colour of a fruit or vegetable. There was such a range of fruits and vegetables that it was a real rainbow. Mr. Pearson, the baby corn, led the parade of colours to the song “Eat Your Vegetables.” The best part of our great success is that all the money goes to a wonderful charity, Barnardos. 3Dimensions Update Years 4, 5 and 6 have been creating wire sculpture for the Sculpture Exhibition next term. The girls have studied the work of a New Zealand artist, Jacqueline Fraser, who created colourful wire sculpture that could hang on the wall. The girls have had to learn how to manipulate and join wire to create the shape they want. They are looking forward to displaying this work for the opening of 3Dimensions on Saturday, 28 July. Quadrangular Sports Tournament Last Thursday, our quadrangular sports tournament was held at Woodford House in Havelock North. We had an early start and a full day of competition. Competing against us were Woodford House, Iona and St George’s from Wanganui. The A hockey played 7-aside and won against Woodford and lost the other two games. The A netball beat Woodford and St George’s, whom they have never beaten before, then narrowly lost to Iona. The B netball team had one loss, a draw and a win against Woodford. Sadly, soccer lost all their games. On points, Carncot came 3rd overall. We had a great day and were well looked after by Woodford. Thank you to Miss White and Mr Pearson for taking us and all the parents who came and supported our teams. Sally Wenham, Sports Captain

Careers Expo On Monday 18 June, the Year 7 and 8 classes went to the Careers Expo. We learnt that you can get diplomas in hair dressing, equine studies, motor sports, sports, travel and tourism and lots more. I would like to be a veterinarian and look after animals. Most of the girls collected a lot of pamphlets. When we grow up, we probably will not know what we want to do with our lives. Going to a Careers Expo helps us to see what is out there in the world to do. We were told, when we turn 18, we can vote. So I realised that we do not have a lot of time. Soon, we will need a job to earn money to look after a family! This is why the Careers Expo gave most of us a heads up. $4.00 was worth it to go to the Careers Expo and I will be thanking Carncot and my parents in ten years time. Cara Brown, Year 8
