living with illness as it is preparing fordying. By supporting the hospice, you aresupporting your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. Reading through the Newsround, Iam as usual struck by the enormousgenerosity and love of our communityin supporting us, especially in this, our30th year. Thank you!

"I didn’t expect it to feel like that”, issomething we hear quite often fromfirst-time visitors to the hospice. They’re pleasantly surprised by thehappy and positive atmosphere whichcharacterises the hospice buildings butmore importantly the people who workand volunteer for us. Isn’t that somewhat incongruous foran institution that’s looking after peoplewho are very unwell, and in somecases dying? We don’t think so, because actuallyhospice care is a celebration of life, ofmaking every day count, of livingwithout fear of dying. Statistics show that approximatelyone-in-two people in the UK will sufferfrom a progressive or malignant illnessat some stage of their life – hospicecare and support is just as much about

Sharon described how the hospicemade life more comfortable for Grant, herself, and their families. She said: “I was able to stay withGrant in his room and I didn’t leave thehospice once he was admitted, something I will be forever grateful for. “The staff were amazing, so kind andcaring. They offered so much comfortand support at what truly is the mostawful time. “We are very lucky to have such anamazing place here; without it ourloved ones may not have the chance tohave such a dignified end to theirlives.” Nearly 400 people have alreadysigned up to take part in this year'sMendip Challenge on 2 June.

I cannot put into words how truly grateful I am thatmy beloved husband was caredfor with such kindness and dignity.

A new clinical computer systemdesigned to improve record-keepingand integration with other local healthservices is being installed at WestonHospicecare. The hospice is upgrading its clinicalelectronic patient management systemfrom CrossCare to EMIS Web. The move comes in large partbecause other care organisations withinthe hospice's catchment area ofSomerset and North Somerset alreadyuse EMIS Web, and the change willsimplify interaction between thesedifferent bodies. The switch is supported by a grantfrom Somerset CCG and will enable thehospice to effortlessly share patientdata with GP surgeries and communitynursing teams across North Somerset. Improvements include care providersbeing immediately informed of data changes made by affiliate carepartners, while the new system alsohelps with registering patients, booking

appointments and data management. In addition, the hospice will savevaluable time and effort by not havingto re-enter data. There were a number of factorsunderpinning the decision, including:• Improved links to GP systems whomake palliative referrals to the hospice.• Simple user interface, which can betailored for each role/team.• Good reporting and analytical tools. Improved communication efficiency isalso a driver of this transformation, withconnectivity to GP systems and otherhealth care systems offering hugepotential advantages in terms of safety, availability of real time information andreduction in administration tasks. Director of Patient Services, JohnBailey, said: "The switch to EMIS Webwill help the hospice streamline andimprove communications with localGPs and care providers, ultimatelyimproving patient care and itsmanagement."
