Medium Voltage market offering completes the package

NHP Grizz-Bar a finalist in Good Design Awards 2014N E W S

Hopefully by now you, our Newsroom readers, are well aware of NHP’s move into the Medium Voltage market, a move we made over 18 months ago that offers many advantages to our customers and the Australasian industrial electrical industry.

NHP has been selling products, systems and solutions for the low voltage market for over 45 years and we believe we understand what the Australian and New Zealand market expects from a quality industrial electrical partner.

Therefore, any deviation from what we have done well for so long in this market had to be world-class, with the experience and knowledge to back it up. Hence, that is what we have done with our entry into the Medium Voltage market.

What we can now provide our customers with is a complete packaged solution. While we are able to be our customer’s ‘one-stop-shop’ for all their industrial electrical and automation requirements, we haven’t been able to complete the Medium Voltage part of the solution until now. Each industry NHP supplies products into requires Medium Voltage infrastructure, therefore we can now facilitate our customer’s entire needs with a complete (low voltage to medium voltage) electrical and automation solution – a truly ‘one-stop-shop’. One supplier. Less management.

Our Medium Voltage team is made up of experienced and highly-skilled Medium Voltage experts who work hand in hand, often in the same building, with the rest of the NHP team, therefore providing a coordinated and seamless response to your project needs.

This same local resource also allows us to customise our offering to suit our customer’s specific design performance criteria, often competing against the global multinational tender with no room to move.

In addition to these points of difference, we have also brought together an excellent product and solution offering for our customers in this space. From quality Medium Voltage Switchgear to long-lasting transformers and market leading substation and automation solutions, our Medium Voltage product offering is not only reliable and built to last, but also ideal for the Australasian Medium Voltage industry climate.

Our three new suppliers are Alstom, SGC and Trafo Elettro, and together with Rockwell Automation, all produce products that stand up on the world stage. By all working together to combine our extensive industry experience and expertise, NHP and each of these suppliers will seek to provide a seamless network of support, logistics and innovative solutions for our customers.

Forming an admired reputation in the protection and control business, Alstom are synonymous with long term support for their products and training services. With the evolution of new products such as digital technology, improved protection relay capability and control systems architecture, NHP and Alstom are perfectly placed to provide customers with more economical solutions and options incorporating NHP’s existing Medium Voltage Switchgear and Transformers range.

SGC (SwitchGear Company), founded in 1979, are world class providers of state-of-the-art and reliable components and systems for medium voltage electrical distribution. Specialising in medium voltage switchgear, SGC invest heavily in research and development to provide their customers with an optimal product that excels in their ease of use, safety and superior quality. The SGC product also not only limits damage to infrastructure, therefore reducing business downtime in the event of a fault, it is a very safe product. It saves lives.

And finally, a tried and proven manufacturer of quality transformers ideal for Medium Voltage applications, Trafo Elettro were founded in 1969 and can provide custom made transformers to customer specifications through their quality product range.

These new supply partners are in addition to our existing Medium Voltage product range from Rockwell Automation in the form of Medium Voltage drives, and when added alongside our expansive low voltage product range and automation offering, NHP can now package up a solution for our customers and do so at an early stage of a project. With Medium Voltage infrastructure often the first package to be released in many Greenfield projects, NHP are now willing and able to be engaged from the outset and throughout.

With many successful large projects already completed to date, we hope we can provide you with the complete solution you are looking for in the near future.

The $2.6 billion privately funded Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) project involves the development of a new coal export terminal by a consortium of eight coal exporters. Once fully commissioned, the terminal will provide over 80 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) in additional export coal capacity through the Port of Gladstone.

The project has created approximately 1000 jobs on site during construction, while investing heavily in community infrastructure, providing $35 million toward the development of the East Shores – Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct project, which will see delivery of a world-class, waterfront redevelopment.

Using modern technology to assist Queensland to continue its rise as a global competitor in the coal exporting market, WICET, located at Golding Point, forms part of the existing Port of Gladstone. Stage One construction is now more than 91% complete as at 1 September 2014, with the project scheduled to load its first ship later this year.

Stage One works at the terminal include a rail receival facility designed to handle 7600 tonnes per hour (with NHP supplying the purpose-built train loader control system), a 5.5km overland conveyor, a stockyard area for close to 1.6 million tonnes of coal, materials handling and sampling systems feeding the 1.8km long jetty conveyor, a single berth ship loader and associated access roads, workshops, administration offices and amenities.

“The NHP team was called upon to provide a range of products and services throughout the WICET project that reinforces the advantage of partnering with a supplier that offers a complete industrial electrical and automation solutions package”, said Mark Pattison, NHP Director - Automation Business. “One of the key criteria was for a local partner to manage the lifecycle of the project. NHP was able to demonstrate its value proposition by having an office in Rockhampton and the automation technical resources in Gladstone to assist in the execution of the contract”.

NHP recently completed the supply of the plant control system and power distribution equipment for the new terminal. The WICET project, which is NHP’s largest single order to date, consisted of the supply of over 300 automation hardware/ PLC panels, 130 networking panels including the supply of the 200 Allen-Bradley Stratix Ethernet switches. NHP also supplied local control stations, and the train loader control system hardware.

NHP contracted directly to WICET for the supply of this equipment which included the allocation of two specialist design engineers to assist with the design of the Rockwell Automation system.

“The job was a great team effort between NHP, Rockwell Automation, and WICET. It was extremely well executed, with the panel building sub-contractor PT Automation Solutions delivering well built, well-engineered panels, and on time” said Ian Wood, NHP’s Project Manager on WICET.

NHP also had a parallel contract for the supply of similar equipment to control the ship loader. This equipment was installed in the ship loader at the point of manufacture prior to delivery to site.

As NHP were responsible for the detailed design and supply of the Plant Control System Hardware including the automation panels and networking panels, a specialist team was assembled consisting of customer and technical support out of Brisbane and Gladstone, project management and document control out of Melbourne, and finally specialist technical support by engineers embedded within the design team at Hatch in Brisbane.

NHP won the project on a competitive tender which called for the supply of the control system hardware and specified Allen-Bradley® PLCs and a ControlLogix system from Rockwell Automation. The project was also standardised on Eldon enclosures as well as purpose built stainless steel enclosures which had to meet the demanding Gladstone Port Authority specification. The ControlLogix system, FT View and Asset Centre was chosen for its adaptability, flexibility and proven reliability at the existing Gladstone Port facilities.

“The system provides uniformity with the adjacent existing site as well as the high performance and reliability that it is well known for”, said Robin Grace, Automation - Business Development at NHP. “FT View was also chosen to provide visibility to the process”.

The WICET project also required a range of stainless steel Concept Plus distribution boards and the associated power distribution and switchgear requirements – all of which were custom engineered at NHP’s National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre located in Laverton, Victoria. It was this ability to custom build both efficiently and expeditiously that NHP’s Director - Product Quality, Engineering & Manufacturing, Alex Coslovich thought brought great value to the WICET project.

“NHP is a solutions provider - we don’t just sell components. It was this technical application knowledge and ability to manufacture automation panels, panel boards and provide engineering support that suited the customer’s specific requirement that enabled us to add value to the WICET project. We always strive for customer service excellence and from the various positive feedback we’ve received from the WICET team, we are confident that we’re hitting the mark”.

The ability for NHP to call upon its extensive engineering support and product range that spans across 19 market categories combined with the relevant technical expertise was of great advantage to those involved in the WICET project. From Switchboard Builders and Engineering Procurement Consultants through to Contractors, Wholesalers and of course the WICET project team, NHP’s understanding of the individual requirements and ability to service them accordingly, formed an important role in the overall delivery of the project.

WICET is being constructed in stages to match forecast coal export demand, with Stage One to deliver 27 million tonnes per annum of export capacity.

When your company is responsible for the annual production of more than 1 billion square metres of plasterboard across 220 facilities, 70 quarrying operations and 60 countries, a certain commitment to performace is a non-negotiable. This is certainly the case for Knauf Plasterboard Australia who, together with globally recognised parent company Knauf Group, employ a manufacturing and production capacity of that very magnitude.

Knauf Plasterboard Australia manufacture and distribute a diverse range of products and systems including plasterboard, mineral fibre tiles and acoustic boards for commercial and residential applications. With two manufacturing facilties in Australia (one in Melbourne and Sydney), Knauf’s determination to produce innovative products and systems that are exceptionally engineered, recently led them to a review of their plant operations at their two facilities - in particular their process automation control infrastructure.

To achieve their ultimate goal of delivering the best results for their customer’s varied application requirements, Knauf required a system that enabled them to deliver the highest levels of quality and service – all of which needed to be underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development. After considering the available products on the market, it was decided that NHP and the Rockwell Automation PlantPAx™ solution was a natural fit and it was subsequently specified for the upgrades at both facilities which each have an identical system comprising of six control centres.

Specially designed to meet a range of key market challenges and objectives that indeed applied to the Knauf operation, the PlantPAx solution made perfect sense for Knauf Project Engineer at the Altona facility in West Melbourne, Jack Hayes.

“The first of a series of upgrades began a couple of years ago at our Sydney operation and have been spread out in a way to minimise our production downtime. As well as upgrading our process control with the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix range, we’ve also upgraded our SCADA piece by piece utilising the PlantPAX system”, said Jack.

“While we had a fair idea about what we wanted to achieve through the upgrades, the ability to consult with the knowledge and experience of Integrated Automation (system integrators) and NHP enabled us to capitalise on the PlantPAx technology in a way that customised our solution for increased results”.

The system was installed by recognised Rockwell Automation system integrators, Integrated Automation, who while working with NHP and Knauf were able to successfully integrate the PlantPAx plant-wide control system.

“We showed them the tools that were available as part of the PlantPAx solution to reduce engineering effort and when it came to architecture design we were also able to assist with correct product selection”, said Andrew Allen, NHP’s Process Technology Specialist.

“Following the successful integration, Integrated Automation’s feedback has been really positive and in using the PlantPAx solution they were able to significantly reduce their engineering effort which is always a great result”.

By adopting this solution, Knauf were able to not only increase efficiencies and productivity across all layers of their operations, but also enable improved business agility, security, time to market and sustainability.

“From our perspective, it is important to get the backbone of your process control solution right and that’s what we’ve been able to do thanks to PlantPAx. We’re now well positioned for future upgrades and the expereience has opened our mind to the places that PlantPAx can take us as a business and the opportunities this creates”, Jack concluded.

In a recent report published by the Clean Energy Council of Australia, the Mount Mercer Wind Farm, undertaken by Meridian Energy Australia, was listed as one of the largest renewable energy projects currently under construction. This should come as no surprise to those aware of the project, as upon completion it is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power close to 100,000 homes – or the equivalent of the nearby regional city of Ballarat in Victoria, Australia! Located in the Golden Plains Shire approximately 30 kilometres south of Ballarat in Western Victoria, the Mount Mercer Wind Farm will also result in a reduction of more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.

Working alongside ETEL Distribution Transformers (based in Auckland, New Zealand), NHP are proud to have been involved in the delivery of a transformer for each of the 66 wind turbine generators, which will convert the voltage from 690 volts all the way up to 33,000 volts, allowing the electricity to be distributed across the national grid.

A specialised transformer manufacturer that services the Pacific region, ETEL manufacture transformers out of Auckland and also have an office in Tullarmarine, Melbourne. ETEL is fully committed to ensuring the highest quality and performance of its range of distribution transformers and associated switchgear and employs a Quality Assurance system to ensure continued compliance and increased peace of mind for the customer.

“Our philosophy has always been to design and build transformers to suit a customer’s needs. We build good quality transformers that are manufactured to the high standards required by the customer and we do it in a timely manner”, said Geoff Knight, Group Sales and Marketing Manager at ETEL.

“We do all our fabrication and engineering in the Auckland facility which offers approximately 18,000 square metres of factory space and partnering with reliable suppliers is critical to our offering”.

Throughout the manufacture process of the 66 transformers (one for each wind turbine at the site) NHP provided a range of components that enabled ETEL to maintain their customer promise of quality, customised transformers.

As well as the MODseries circuit breakers, ETEL also used Cirprotec surge diveters, Wohner fuses, Allen-Bradley® Prosafe trapped key interlocks and Socomec load-break switches which formed the large majority of the low voltage panel that was fitted within the transformers.

“NHP have a very reliable, fully tested product and have a number of offices in Australia which enabled them to back-up that product on-site with relative ease”, continued Knight.

“We wouldn’t have chosen to use the NHP product if we had any concerns about their reliability and we wouldn’t hesitate to partner with them in future projects”.

With completion of the project set in the coming months, the wind farm is connected to the existing National Electricity Grid at the Elaine Terminal Station where it is converted prior to distribution. As well as the environmental benefits, the Mt Mercer Wind Farm will provide substantial benefits to the communities involved by creating jobs, investment and flow-on effects and enhancing community wellbeing.

Lifecycle challenges have evolved due to advancements in technology. Lifecycle Extension & Migrations Services help to identify, mitigate and eliminate automation obsolescence risk. As products approach the end of their expected life, the availability of parts and resources become more difficult to obtain. With a Lifecycle Extension Agreement, you can avoid these risks and the possibility of any financial consequences in the form of extended downtime.

To begin, NHP have to identify your obsolescence risks by performing an Installed Base Evaluation, which generates a Lifecycle Analysis. This analysis provides you with a better understanding of the risks your facility may experience and ability to pinpoint automation obsolescence risk by site, area, line, machine and panel.

Once the legacy assets are identified, NHP can provide immediate options to migrate certain products to newer technology, or we can develop a “service bridge” for your plant via a Lifecycle Extension Agreement. Included in the agreement are a critical set of services — reserved repair, remote support and on-site services — to help you avoid the costs associated with unplanned downtime, parts and repair and unplanned costs to upgrade equipment.

Many of today’s industrial and commercial electrical installations are protected by switchgear with a primary role to activate at a moment’s notice, to prevent damage to installations from various forms of overcurrent. Lying dormant for many years, ageing switchgear will either be very close to the end of its useful life or worse, beyond it.

Main circuit breakers, as part of the incoming voltage system, may no longer be manufactured and/or be serviceable. Therefore knowing the life cycle status and the risks associated with installed components is important for managing unplanned downtime.

NHP, an Australian owned company providing power control solutions for over 45 years, has the experience and expertise to provide you with the most appropriate solution for your application and can assist with:

• Reducing unscheduled downtime

• Stabilising maintenance budgets

• Maximising productivity

• Improving security and safety

• Increase reliability

Lifecycle Extension AgreementMinimize Your Risk Associated with Operating Older or Discontinued Products

Managing the lifecycle of your automation equipment can be a daunting task. The rapid advancements in new technologies have made this task even more challenging in the last few years. Rockwell Automation can help you control these lifecycle challenges.

As products age and near the end of their lifecycle, the ability to eff ectively support them can become diffi cult. Rockwell Automation Lifecycle Extension & Migrations can help identify, mitigate, and eliminate automation support risks.

A Lifecycle Extension Agreement can help you focus on mitigating the risks associated with the continued operation of older or discontinued automation products. This is particularly benefi cial if you are not currently in a position to modernize or migrate to new technology.

Benefi ts• Minimize downtime with guaranteed,

comprehensive support of yourdiscontinued or obsolete products

• Buy added time for migrationplanning and budgeting

• Support your facility without increasing assets (no added carrying costs)

Features• Bridges maintenance staff ’s

“knowledge gaps” associated withdiscontinued products

• Includes migration planning

• Is scalable and fl exible, to include additional services for the entire plant

The installed base of legacy automation systems reaching the end of their useful life is equivalent to over $65 Billion.

In a 2010 ARC poll, 88% of process automation customers acknowledged the use of automation beyond the manufacturer’s obsolescence date and the majority of users have no lifecycle plan.
