When the concept of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), a process or methodology used to learn more about customers’ needs and behaviours in order to develop stronger relationships with them, started to take off in the late 1990s, it was perceived as a great way to build customer loyalty.

However, as of today, there are many examples in the business world where CRM implementations have not worked as planned. The main reason for this is because it is often assumed that the CRM software used will build customer loyalty and that customers would see a benefit in it. In fact, what builds customer loyalty and benefits are creative marketing strategies which deliver a view into the future of what customers want from their supply partners. This can be achieved by utilising customised communications based on a database.

Sophisticated software is used, of course, but the quality of the people, not the software, does the thinking and develops the strategy which benefits the customer and the organisation. Without such a sophisticated piece of software and the calibre of people utilising the software, then a business will struggle to connect with its customers in a meaningful and effective way.

At NHP we have six key values, but arguably the most important one is passion for customers. Our CRM program has evolved and will continue to evolve so that our customers’ experience with our company is always a positive one. Recently we have rolled out a new advanced piece of software, not used in Australia or New Zealand before, which we have named ‘NHP Plus’. This vital software, which is already fully utilised across the USA and in parts of Europe, will be used initially to assist us in managing and projecting what automation products and solutions are likely to be expected from us by our customers. ‘NHP Plus’ will then be applied to other parts of the business.

‘NHP Plus’ will also assist us with our supply chain management so we can meet our promise of providing you, our customers, with ‘what you want, when, where and how you want it’. Without these leading indicator projections we would find it more difficult to provide our customers with the right product in their local area.

And finally, ‘NHP Plus’ will also allow for us to better align our key people, products and solutions with key customer requirements so we are able to better service what you need. After all, reliability of product and service should be something which is every customer’s right to expect rather than something which is seen as an additional bonus.

Lloyd Thomas - Managing Director, CEO

Natural Waters of Viti Limited (NWVL), the Fijian home of the international brand FIjI Water, is located in the picturesque Yaqara Valley in Fiji and produces what many believe to be the purest bottled water in the world. Deriving its water from an artesian aquifer on-site at their bottling plant, the water is never touched by human hands and is so pure because it is bottled straight from the source. So when FIjI Water was looking to undertake a major upgrade and expansion to their facilities, Protech Power, in conjunction with NHP, was a clear choice.

The FIJI Water facility, which consists of a preform, closure and bottle manufacturing section, as well as three bottling lines, packaging, dispatch and containerising facilities, can produce over 85,000 bottles of water an hour - the majority of which is exported to the USA with smaller markets in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Australia, Korea, Middle East and the Caribbean.

The plant is expecting significant future growth and to meet these requirements, called upon Protech Power to assist in upgrading the existing 415 V distribution infrastructure. Protech Power also helped prepare the plant for future expansion whilst ensuring a greener footprint which included options for potential solar power and wind generation. The main switchboard was designed by Ian Grey of Protech Power, and his brief was a Plant wide overview, with future increases in production capacity. This included a heat rise study, fault calculations, relay co-ordination study, flexibility of operational power access, and an upgrade to the earthing systems.

Protech Power selected NHP as the equipment supplier for the major upgrade to FIJI Water, with the project involving one of the largest CUBIC Switchboards ever supplied in Australia. The 25 metre long back to back switchboard, which offers 1250 mm rear access and contains 14 tonnes of copper bar, was built, tested and commissioned by Protech Power at their Eagle Farm site. There are plans for future additional high voltage power generation,

using the existing generators, renewable energy sources and a possible connection to the national grid of Fiji. This all adds up to a large fault level caused by parallel generators and so a switchboard capable of a withstanding capacity of 100 KA is required.

The CUBIC board was built using five 5000 A three 4000 A and three 2500 A Terasaki AR breakers, and contained various changeover and emergency supplies as well as Carlo Gavazzi and Sprecher + Schuh product. The board was assembled by Protech Power Switchboards, whose staff are experienced CUBIC board builders of many years in New Zealand and Australia.

The requirement was that it had to be completed to AS/NZS standards at the insistence of the resident NWVL Managing Director, Paul Davies, and delivered and installed in a tight schedule so as to not upset production at the plant. After completion of the Protech factory testing, it was then split into sections, containerised, and exported to Fiji where it was reassembled by Protech Power.

Project Supervisor David Cannon and staff member Matthew Stebbing, with help from local qualified Fijian contractors, installed the switchboard in a new custom built substation, along with extensive additional cabling and associated tray works. It was then comprehensively tested, commissioned, and put into service.

NWVL is one of the largest private employers in Fiji with about 360 employees. As the plant is located in a rural part of the island, it has created huge economic opportunities for the local community. NWVL pays royalties on extraction / sales and has set up trusts in the local community to support Education, Health and Infrastructure projects. In addition to this, FIJI Water has set up the FIJI Water Foundation (www.fijiwaterfoundation.org), which serves as a vehicle for the renovation of schools, flood mitigation, water infrastructure development and health care throughout the country.

The Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the University of New South Wales has recently opened, becoming the first centre in Australia to bring together childhood and adult cancer research at the one site. The $100 million-plus facility houses up to 400 researchers from UNSW and the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia, and is one of the largest dedicated cancer research centres in the Southern Hemisphere.

The initiative, which NHP was proud to be a part of, involved the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer research facility on the upper campus area of the UNSW Kensington Campus. The Kensington campus is adjacent to the existing UNSW biomedical research and is also in close proximity to the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospitals.

The facility comprises of almost 15,000m2 of floor space over eight levels, including two basement levels. The two basement levels will house stores, support services, holding and procedure rooms, wash up facilities, plant and equipment, and will also be used for animal research. The Ground floor and levels 1 to 3 includes laboratories, technical support rooms and office accommodation, level 5 is home to epidemiological research, and level 6 is dedicated to Children’s Cancer Institute accommodation.

The Lowy Cancer Research Centre is one of UNSW’s first buildings aiming for a “5 Star” Green rating. One of the key design principles of the building was to ensure the most Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) is achieved. Some of the measures that were adopted in the design included:

• Theeliminationofdirectsunlightandconsequent heat gain to the building,

• Provisionofmovementsensorstoensurelights are on when spaces are occupied,

• Highefficientmechanicalplantandequipment, high value indoor environment quality with natural light, reduced glare and noise minimisation.

Whilst ESD measures were important to the overall design scope of the building, other technical elements for the day to day functioning where required by the tenants. NHP provided many products that met with the functional specifications required by the University of New South Wales for this key project as well as the technical performance specification detailed by Aurecon (formally known as Connell Wagner). The issue of electrical isolation was important for two reasons: the first being the safety of personnel, which is paramount in any situation, and secondly, in the C25 facility, accidental switch off could comprise time based experiments within the laboratories, jeopardising research studies that are on-going. For this reason NHP’s Concept Powersafe was the switchboard of choice for the UNSW Engineering Team headed up by Mr. Chris Sanderson.

Electrical Switchboard Manufacturer K.E. Brown also played a key role in the Lowy Cancer Research Centre and were pleased to be a part of such an important project for the University of NSW and cancer research. K.E. Brown manufactured the Upstream Main Switchboards, Generator, UPS and other switchboards that included the lighting control panels, utilising Terasaki circuit breakers. Supported by a time current curve study, these circuit breakers minimise electrical outage to problematic circuits rather than potentially disrupting other areas of the facility.

Electrical services contractor Downer Engineering, who were the successful contractors to Bovis Lend Lease, selected NHP as the successful supplier for two main reasons according to Downer Project Manager, Jim Onasis. Onasis recalled basing his decision on NHP’s ability to understand and comply with UNSW technical specification as well as their capability to deliver large numbers of Distribution Boards in a relatively short time frame as per the construction schedule.

“Downer EDI has worked with NHP on a number of large projects and we have of the upmost confidence in NHP as they always keep us informed from a manufacturing and delivery point of view,” says Onasis.

“Once the MSB and DB switchboard drawings were approved by Aurecon and Bovis Lend Lease, it was a simple matter of getting the ball rolling and getting updates on where NHP and K.E. Brown were at so as to fit with our installation commitments. They did a great job at a switchboard manufacturing and contractor’s level, keeping us informed which assisted us during our progress meetings with Bovis Lend Lease”.

With the C25 Cancer Building completed in November 2009 and officially opened in early 2010, Chris Sanderson is now looking forward to the next group of projects for the UNSW.

“It is important to the Engineering and Facilities team at UNSW that we are informed about the new technologies that suppliers like NHP are able to bring to market”, said Sanderson.

“At UNSW we are always interested in products associated with energy efficiency, electrical safety and power distribution and we not only encourage development of new ideas, but also employ these products once commercialised to their best use”.

Allen-Bradley® EC5-E3 overload relay perfect for low voltage applicationsNHP’s distribution partner Rockwell Automation has expanded its overload relay family with the new 193-EC5 E3 Plus solid-state overload relay, featuring voltage protection and energy monitoring.

Part of the E3 Plus family, the new overload relay combines current and voltage protection with enhanced power monitoring and diagnostic capabilities, helping users improve energy efficiency and safeguard critical electric motor loads. The new overload relay is specially designed for low voltage applications in material handling, water/wastewater, process, petrochemical, and minerals and mining.

“Customers want to be able to monitor consumption patterns and adjust their manufacturing procedures to use electricity more efficiently,” said Neil Williams, NHP’s Senior Product Manager. “The 193-EC5 E3 Plus relay meets this demand by providing current, voltage and power-quality information of a specific motor. This capability in turn helps speed troubleshooting, minimise downtime and reduce energy costs.”

Communicating status and diagnostic information using DeviceNetTM communications with Rockwell Software RSEnergyTM Metrix software, the new overload relay identifies motors contributing to the monthly peak demand and power factor line items on utility bills. It also assists in activity-based cost accounting and verifying energy-reduction initiatives. In addition, the overload relay is equipped with Allen Bradley® DeviceLogixTM Intelligent Component Technology, which integrates logic-solving capability into the overload relay. This provides users with basic digital control when a programmable controller is not available. It also can be used to turn off a motor in the event of lost communications within a control system.

The new solid-state overload relay also helps protect against voltage issues, such as under voltage, voltage unbalance, phase loss, frequency and phase rotation before the contactor coil is energised. While the motor is powering a load, the overload relay protects the motor based on excessive real power (kW), reactive power (kVAR), apparent power (kVA) and power factor. The overload relay accommodates currents ranging from 0.4 A to 860 A, as well as currents up to 5,000 A using external current transformers.

It is with great excitement that NHP can introduce to customers the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 753 AC Drive from supply partner Rockwell Automation - the latest addition to the company’s Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 750 series.

INNOVATIONWith enhanced safety features, DeviceLogix embedded control technology and predictive diagnostics, the PowerFlex 753 offers the latest VSD innovations.

1. The embedded DeviceLogix can be programmed with up to 225 function blocks using standard drive software, and allows the VSD to be programmed with some PLC functionality.

DeviceLogix controls outputs and manages status information locally within the drive allowing you to operate the drive independently or complimentary to the supervisory control, and also helps to improve system performance and productivity.

This means that in the event that plant communications go down, the drive can perform stand alone logic for a critical process.

Expansion is possible by the addition of more I/O cards to the drive. To help learn more about this, NHP can offer some hands on training using the DeviceLogix on a PowerFlex 753 and standard software. Advantages include:

a. Reduce reaction time by processing in the drives which reduces dependency on network throughput data.

b. Provide scaling, selector switches, or other data manipulations not already built into the drive

c. Read inputs/write outputs and exclusively control the drive

d. Provide an option for decision making if communication is lost with the main controller

e. Control other PowerFlex drives via a peer-to-peer Ethernet/IP network

DeviceLogix is easily programmed via: RSLogix5000, DriveExplorer v 6.01 and DriveTools SP v 5.01

2. Predictive diagnostics allows the drive to keep track of information that affects the life of its cooling fans and relay outputs, and even external devices like the machine or motor bearings. A real

time clock assists with the predictive function and helps provide additional fault diagnosis information.

3. Enhanced safety is offered with two safety options: Safe Torque-Off or Safe Speed Monitor. The Safe Speed Monitor function provides Stop Categories 0, 1 and 2.

ONE COMMON PLATFORMThis series of drives offers one common easy-to-use platform across the entire power range, with the PF753 ranging from 0.75 to 250 kW at 415 V AC and 650 V DC input. The PowerFlex 753 has been optimised for general purpose induction motor control applications, while maintaining the sophisticated functionality of the PowerFlex 750 series.

IP54 and IP66 heatsink flange mount models are offered across the range with standard coated boards, sensorless vector and FORCE technology control, start-up wizard, and a sensible set of standard I/O. Options are available via three additional slots for encoder feedback, additional I/O and Ethernet/IP.

A new enhanced Human Interface Module (HIM) offers added functionality and improves ease of use with reduced keystrokes and start-up wizard. The HD LCD display allows for six lines of text for more meaningful explanation of parameters and events.

The PF753 will suit general applications including fans, extruders, pumps, conveyors, mixers, centrifuges and any general purpose industry, as well as some existing PowerFlex 70 and 700 customers looking for an update.

COMPLETE SUITE OF DRIVESTogether with our existing ‘Component Class’ drives, especially the PF4M and PF40, NHP offers the most comprehensive range on the market. Add to that the HV Powerflex 7000 drive for large scale applications and we have one easy to choose portfolio of drives. The future looks promising as the PowerFlex750 series continue to grow with some exciting developments to be unveiled in the future.
