September 2016 Walkington Newsletter

Dear Friends,  This year my husband and I spent our two week summer holiday taking our new touring caravan to Scotland, where we visited Aberdeen, Inverness and Glenrothes. We enjoyed the freedom of caravanning and the spacious, well‐kept sites, and of course enjoyed discovering these places which were new to us. Everybody has asked us two things: weather and midges..?! Both not bad, thankfully.  Whilst on holiday we made two sorts of journeys. The first was towing the caravan on unfamiliar roads and trus ng the satnav to get us there – except when we’d been warned that the roads were two narrow for the caravan, then my husband had to trust me as map‐reader! The second sort of journey was when we went on walks. Over half way along the walk on the cliff edge by the sea, as it started to drizzle, the path appeared to run out…the guide book just said that the path might appear to run out but s ck close to the fence and all would be well!  We are all on the journey of life and some mes find ourselves going down unfamiliar paths, some that were unexpected but others that are unavoidable and maybe not welcome. Some mes we find ourselves having to trust others to help us along – perhaps if we’re suddenly feeling vulnerable or facing something momentous. At other  mes it may not be obvious where we’re going and we need to follow something familiar to get us through. If we are people of faith in God, some mes we realise that this gives us a sense of security despite being on an unknown path; although not necessarily – spiritual writers o en speak of the discoveries made about oneself when experiencing an unwelcome sense of deser on.  Wherever you have been this summer, may it have been a place of discovery, whether you were on a well‐known or unexpected path in your journey of life. Especially if you have received good or challenging news that will affect your life choices or circumstances, may you know where to find guidance and reassurance from those you can trust to help you through.  Best wishes, Rachel

VILLAGE ISSUES

WALKINGTON LADIES SOCIAL GROUP This month about 23 of us went to Hornsea to visit the Hornsea Inshore Rescue centre. We were greeted with coffee and biscuits and then we watched a video showing the rescue team in ac on. A er that the chief officer talked to us about the rescue procedure and regaled us with various accounts of some of the  more drama c ou ngs. Then later he took us to see the rescue boat and jet ski, we were amazed at how small the boat looked especially when told it would hold 23 people.

The next treat was the fish and chips arrived and very nice they were too, all round a great day with thanks to Margaret for arranging it.

WALKINGTON BOWLS CLUB The Bowling Club's Open Day held on Sunday, 12th June, 2016 was considered a success. Much interest was shown; however, we failed to sign any new members. This event will be repeated again in 2017. On Sunday 19th June, 2016 the Danby Trophy was won by our captains, Norma Tanikal and John Dunn. Congratula ons to you both.

The summer lunch held on Saturday, 9th July, 2016 went with a swing! Although, we had showers in the morning, many members put up gazebos hoping for the best, and sure enough, the sun came out and our 40th Anniversary lunch was great fun. Chris ne Elston had arranged for us to be entertained by a (li le) big band who played for over an hour, a cake cu ng ceremony was performed by four of the original members Doris Fearnley, Barbara Wild, and Judith and Graham Stephenson, and John Dunn assisted by Norma Tanikal organised a different approach to lawn bowls. Each member taking part was blind folded, turned round once and then ask to bowl towards the sound of a ringing bell. Sounds easy; it wasn't, but we all enjoyed plenty of laughter.

Thursday, 4th August, 2016 saw the ladies play their annual Rose Bowl match. This was a good a ernoon followed by tea and scones. The winners were Pauline Blizzard, Be y Bentley and me!

Our 40th Anniversary match against Yorkshire Team was played on Tuesday, 2nd August, 2016. Our club was well represented matched by players from across the county of Yorkshire. One Walkington rink lost, but Walkington won overall. Well done to everyone who par cipated. A special thank you to ladies of the social commi ee who provided an excellent plated meal which was held in the village hall. Judith Parkes said it was hard work but well worth the effort.

I have one compe on to report; John Turgoose won the Yorkshire Mens over 65 singles. There were 46 entries, playing 8 matches including the final, and it meant travelling to Middlesborough for several of these. I might also men on John's wife, Pat Turgoose, has previously won the Ladies final which I think is quite unique for a married couple to both hold this  tle. Graham Stephenson made it to the semi‐final. Congratula ons to John and you, too, Graham.

As I write this, the ladies are playing in the final of the Challenge Cup, so we wish them every success.

I must also men on John Ke lewell's beau ful display of begonias at the clubhouse this year. He said he wanted to try something new, and naturally, he has done us proud again.                                                      Judith Rogerson

HANGING BASKETS

I am sure most of you will have no ced our Hanging Baskets on the lamp posts throughout the village are now in full  bloom  together with the three pubs making the village a splendid site in the summer.

This year we have had considerable difficulty with the watering of them  and if it hadn't been for councillors David Drew and Clive Dixon who stepped in and gave up their  me on a regular basis the baskets would not have survived.

We have since purchased a new watering system and employed someone to carry our the task of watering them, but this comes at a cost.

Up to present we have only had three dona ons from villagers; therefore we will seriously have to consider as to whether we carry on with the baskets another year. It would be a great shame if this were to happen and we will endeavour to do our utmost to keep this special a rac on going.

The narrow stretch of road near the Post Office and Cost Cutter shop adjoining the possible access point to the site already a congestion point. However, the Inspector was satisfied that if the existing detached house to the east of the site access was demolished driver’s visibility in either directions would not be affected and should not lead to safety problems.
