It sure went by fast. It was only yesterday that I was asked to be your president. It was a joyful time, and then a tragic time with the untimely death of our outgoing president Sandee Harvey. We all miss her. During my presidency we also lost three more members, Sally Jonsson, Joyce DeLeo and Christine Helen Rapp. We honor them and they are missed. We also ate cake together to celebrate the guild’s 34 th birthday. Many of our members had an awesome time at the Retreat. Through the stressful times, the sad times, the happy and proud times, we have come together and triumphed. I am proud to have been your president throughout it all. Now, enough of this. President’s Message It is amazing that my year in office is coming to an end. It sure went by fast. It was only

yesterday that I was asked to be your president. It was a joyful time, and then a tragic

time with the untimely death of our outgoing president Sandee Harvey. We all miss her.

During my presidency we also lost three more members, Sally Jonsson, Joyce DeLeo

and Christine Helen Rapp. We honor them and they are missed.

But now, let’s rejoice and remember the good times at our guild. We had so many

wonderful speakers. Remember the stories told by Julie Silber of America’s funniest

quilts, and don’t forget the math with Lynn Wilder, or the Delightful Diva Designs of

Karen Boutte’s Wonderful Whimsical Wearables. There were so many more great

speakers. Our guild is truly blessed.

Great speakers and wonderful workshops is not all our guild excels in. The Quilt Show

we just had was fantastic. A big thank you goes to Mary Walcher and Donna Driver for

organizing the show. And another cheer goes to the many, many others who worked

extremely hard to put it all together. It takes a village, and we have that village.

Looking back over the year, there are so many activities the guild has been involved in.

We did quilting demonstrations at Alviso Adobe and helped budding beginners during

Quilting in the Garden at Alden Lane. We enjoyed the silent action, the Holiday Brunch

and a fun Mystery Trip. We also ate cake together to celebrate the guild’s 34th birthday.

Many of our members had an awesome time at the Retreat. Many members contributed

their time and artistry to supply quilts for Community Quilts that are given to a variety

of agencies. Hundreds were given to those who needed their comforts. Quilts were

exhibited at the fair – Mary Walcher won best of show. Donna Karbach and her team

were responsible to give away Quilts of Valor to war veterans every day of the fair, not

to mention all the other presentations they made throughout the year. Thank you for

representing our guild in such a meaningful way.

It really has been a full year. There was so much more I could add to this list. Yes, we are a village, a family of quilters.

Through the stressful times, the sad times, the happy and proud times, we have come together and triumphed. I am proud

to have been your president throughout it all. Now, enough of this. Let’s get back to that quilting. Thank you all.

~ Your President (for now) Karen Parker

May Guest Speakers:

Instead of a regular speaker, we have invited four local quilt shops to share info about their offerings:

The Cotton Patch, Lafayette Wooden Gate Quilts, Danville

In Between Stitches, Livermore Ladybug’s Quilts, Manteca.

May Block of the Month

HERE COMES SUMMER - time for a picnic in the park. This month’s block kits will

ultimately become a picnic table cover, in July 4th colors, of course. Each kit contains fabric to

Workshops June: Vicki Johnson www.vntgraphics.com

Easy Fabric Printing - Using

fabric paint that is water-based and

nontoxic, this class will explore

many simple methods for painting

fabric, including scrunching, Saran

wrap printing, stenciling, block

printing, vegetable printing, leaf

printing, found object printing,

fabric crayons, and mono-printing.

Bring your fat quarters, a potato and

come play!!!! ($7.00 materials fee)

July: Marion Coleman www.marioncoleman.com

Quilting Your Story: History

in Fabric - Use photographs

and memorabilia to create a

quilt that tells your unique

story. Learn various

techniques for transfers on

Inkjet printers using elementary

PhotoShop. A great opportunity

to learn this special technique!

August: Denise Oyama Miller www.deniseoyamamiller.com

Broken Color - In this workshop, you will learn how to

make a beautiful wall quilt in the “Broken Color” technique,

where each piece of fabric in the quilt top is surrounded by

a thin line of color. This approach makes the colors “pop”

off the surface of the quilt. The appliqué is done with a

raw-edge approach. This technique is fun, easy to do for

beginners and advanced quilters, and can be learned in a

day.

September: Nancy Ota www.nancyota.com

Sashiko - Spend a day with this talented award-winning

quilter and learn Sashiko, a gorgeous hand embroidery

technique that can be used in quilts and garments. And you

don’t need to tote a machine to class!

October: Annie Smith www.simplearts.com

Stashbusters - On Saturday, Annie will gently help us

laugh at our tendency to build monstrous stashes – so, come

to workshop on Sunday and learn lots of technique for using

your stash. Annie will inspire you to create simple but

beautiful quilts from what may have been yesterday’s

leftovers.

Workshops are only $45 for guild members – a bargain compared to classes offered at quilt shops, shows and

Retreats. Check out class samples at the Workshop table at the monthly meetings. Click on the links for the

speakers’ websites above to get more info on their background.

Committee Chairs Needed The Program I position for 2016-2017 is open beginning in June - and it is a LOT OF FUN ! Choose speakers and

workshops, and meet the leading teachers in the region and beyond. Indulge your desire to learn all those new

things! You spend a whole year choosing and contracting.... then the second year of this position will involve hosting the

speakers as they come to present and teach! There are several AVQ members available to assist you as you learn the

'ropes', and there are easy venues where you can learn about available speakers and teachers. Templates for contract and

budget planning are ready for you to use. If you have questions, email me - if you're ready to volunteer, let our new

President know of your interest. ~ Kathleen Rountree, Program I (2014-15)

Librarian needed: The Library is your wonderful AVQ resource. There are over 500 books, 2-3 checkout ladies, many

box sitters, back door parking, a generous book budget, and carts for toting those books. The only missing item is a

Librarian! This is YOUR opportunity to become the next Library committee chair beginning now. It would be

unfortunate for the guild to place the library in our storage beginning at the end of the May meeting. Please contact me

ASAP to volunteer for this committee position. ~ Mary Ann Soby

Other Open Committee Chairs: Community Quilts - Parliamentarian - Publicity

Workshops - Opportunity Quilt Planning - Retreat 2016

Please contact Mary Ann Soby if you are interested in filling any of these spots. Mentoring and assistance in learning

these roles is always available.

Anniversary Event Alden Lane is celebrating 60 years of business in Livermore with an open house on May 16

th and 17

th, 10 am to 2 pm.

Among many of the organizations that Alden Lane Nursery supports, AVQ has been asked to help with the festivities. We

will have two tables to showcase quilts from Community Outreach programs as well as offer information about the guild.

If you would like to demonstrate some hand sewing techniques you would be most welcome.

I am looking for a few people to help out from 10 am to noon and noon to 2 pm. Please let me know if you would be

available to help out for a few hours on either of those days to promote the guild and its activities.

This is a great opportunity for the guild to reach out to the community. Alden Lane Nursery is a great supporter of our

guild - let’s do the same for them. ~ Mary Walcher

Quilt Show Wrap-up

Donna Driver and I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time and

worked hard to put together a really nice quilt show. The attendees said how

wonderful all the quilts were and that our show is one of the best. The vendors

seemed to be busy selling and the Country Store was bustling. You should all be

very proud of the work that you did.

Our wrap up meeting is May 13th and we are still waiting for bills and dollars to

come in. We hope to have all of it finished by the meeting so we can report to

the board.

A special thank you to all of the Quilt Show Committee who gave up some

evenings, travelled to the meetings and worked hard for months on the show. Audrey Hutchinson, Earlene Bridgeman,

JoAnna Collins, Donna Karbach, Virginia Butterfield, Dorothy Maddox, Sandi Fisher, Laurlee Fry, Linda Perricone,

Gretchen Crozier, Maya Madhavan, Pam Campion, Robin Rees, Jan Steinhoff, Nancie DeProspero, Sally Mirault, Marty

Lamonica, Kim Jagger, Kathy Stewart, Diane Escobar, Susan Del Boccio, Lori Korch, Diane Lovitt, Helen Rydbeck,

Janice Brooke, Laurie May, Shirley Greene, Donna Jo Kingdon and Linda Campbell.

Special thanks goes to Sue Stephenson, Jeanne and Jack Brophy, Ed Perricone, and all the husbands, brothers, sons,

nephews, nieces, etc. who came and helped without any thought of reward. We could not have done it without you! ~ Mary Walcher

IMPORTANT DOOR PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT: If anyone won or knows anyone who won a door prize from ‘The

Nimble Thimble’, I have a corrected door prize which you will be much happier with than the one you found in your

envelope. Please contact Laurie May.

RAFFLE BASKETS: We would like to thank the friendship groups and individuals who

donated raffle baskets. We received many comments on how beautiful they were. The top

"sellers" were the three baskets with primarily fabric: Fat Quarter Frenzy, Batik Bonanza and

Under the Sea followed by Girls Day Out (all gift cards) and The Ultimate A's Fan. Thanks

to the guild members for their support. We raised $1,875!!

~ Susan Del Boccio and Diane Escobar

SETUP: A BIG THANK YOU to all the folks who helped with setup, whether they planned

to or jumped in as needed! It took a village and you were our village! Guest comments

included “This show was as good as Pacific International Quilt Festival!” We couldn't have

done it without you! ~ With GRATITUDE, Donna Karbach

Opportunity Quilt Wrap Up

The quilt was a great success, earning the guild a little over $8,000. We, as a guild, have much to be proud of, not the least

of which is the winner! Congratulations to one of our own guild members, Jerrie Powell, the winner of Cherrywood

Kaleidescope. Jerrie is a very special member because she was on the committee to finish the quilt and spent many hours

sewing it, including the piped binding.

Thanks to all who worked on the quilt and all those who hauled it around to guilds and sold raffle tickets. And, thank you

to all the members who uncomplainingly bought and sold tickets this last year.

~ Jan Steinhoff, Opportunity Quilt Marketing Chair

Quilts of Valor On Sunday, March 29, at Donna Fay Bower’s invitation, Quilts of

Valor-Rookie Quilt Project led a Service Community Project at First

United Methodist Church in San Leandro. Community Quilts provided

12 pillow case kits and the church purchased enough material to make

another 12, for a total of 24. Audrey Hutchinson and Sue Green

coached the group and it went great! They had at least 6 people sewing

(one for the first time), a couple pinning pillowcases together for

sewing, some trimming and pressing and were able to complete the 24

pillowcases in less than 2 hours!

Two Quilts of Valor were presented on

Saturday, April 18, at Amador Valley

Quilters’ Show. One went to 100-year-

old WWII veteran Lanthey Pepares, who

served with General MacArthur in the

Pacific. The other went to Korean War

veteran, Jack Brophy. Laura Hoover did

a great job again as our Mistress of

Ceremonies. Quilts were presented by

Bonnie Schwegerl and Dorothy Maddox (also the maker). The ceremony was

appreciated by families of both recipients and guests of the show.

Alameda County Fair has invited Amador Valley Quilters to present Quilts of Valor again this year. If you would like to

nominate a local veteran to receive a Quilt of Valor at the Fair, if you would like to present a Quilt of Valor (yours or

another), or if you would like to assist in the planning and presentations, please contact Bonnie Schwegerl.

Stoneridge Creek has nominated 17 World War II veterans (so far) to receive Quilts of Valor at a Veterans Day event on

their premises. If you would like to make or present a Quilt of Valor, or nominate a SC resident to be included in this event,

please contact AVQ Quilts of Valor. ~ Donna Karbach, QOV/RQP chair

Community Quilts At the April Guild meeting we welcomed Jennifer Romero who represented UCSF Benioff Childern’s Hospital. This

organization works with children living with cystic fibrosis. We donated 12 quilts to be given to the children who

“graduate” to the adult programs.

Cystic Fibrosis has been linked with the term "sixty-five roses." Many of our quilt recipients have noted the roses on the

quilts and made this connection. "65 Roses" is what some children with cystic fibrosis (CF) call their disease because the

words are much easier for them to pronounce. Such a special connection, as our guild newsletter is called the Amador

Rose. To learn more about 65 roses visit the following website www.cff.org/aboutCFFoundation/About65Roses/

KUDOS to our Guild members who made 20 or more quilts during the past year:

Linda Ballou Susan Del Boccio BJ Meier Jeanne Brophy

June Hurd Vera Pierce Julie Colburn Kathy Levesque

Betsy Wachter Gretchen Crozier

At the April guild meeting, we gave each of them a new rotary cutter blade. During the next month, we will be giving

thread and rotary cutter blades to members of the Cut Ups, Happy Endings, Scrap Happy Day Traders, Sew & Sews and

Quiltinators. These friendship groups focus on making community quilts. The Steering Committee had funds available for

this project. Thanks again to all of you who certainly go above and beyond! We collected 54 quilts at the April meeting.

Thanks to all who helped in this effort.

As this is my final newsletter article as chair of the Steering Committee, thanks to every one of you who have helped in a

myriad of ways. It does truly “take a village” to make a successful program.

~ Pam Campion, Community Quilts Chair.

A Fond Farewell

I have greatly enjoyed my turn as newsletter editor for the last year and a half. It’s a bit like piecing a quilt top, fitting all

the articles and photos on the pages. We are very fortunate to have a new member with excellent skills to take over this

project – Chris Sagan. I’ll be the new Membership chair and look forward to putting more names to faces as you sign in

at meetings. ~ Kathy Stewart
