butions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.
that you should make a label for each one of your quilts. You
may include your name (and the name of the long arm quilter if
applicable), the name of your quilt, the pattern, the date and
location the quilt was made. If the quilt is a gift, the recipient’s
name may be included. If the quilt celebrates a special occasion
or event, that may be included as well.
The month of October is dedicated to keeping children healthy.
October 8th - The Great Chicago Fire - The legend of how the
fire started goes like this: Mrs. O'Leary left a lantern in the barn
and a cow kicked it over, thus starting the fire. The fire started
sometime in the evening on October 8, 1871. The fire spread
quickly and burned down four miles of land and building. It
also killed about 250 people.
OCTOBER 12 —PROGRAM You are in for a treat this month! Our trunk
show presenter is one of our members- Carol
Hunter-Ward. Rumor has it that her work con-
tains a great deal of hand quilting. Carol is a Past President of
BHQG. During her tenure, the guild had its first quilt show at
Paris Fairgrounds and headed a quilt documentation program for
the Brant community to record our local heritage - quilt docu-
mentation was taking place across Canada. Carol learned to sew
at her mother’s knee and completed numerous 4H sewing classes.
She began quilting in the 1970’s with a class at Troy Women’s
Institute and has continued to love every moment of quilting.
Carol will be discussing her journey as a quilter and how it
evolved in her love of combining traditional quilting with the
modern day movement. As an added bonus, Carol will passion-
ately describe the Quilt Documentation project that found its
roots in our guild.

QUILT OF BELONGING
EXCERPT FROM THE WEBSITE: HTTPS://WWW.QUILTOFBELONGING.CA/MAKING-THE-QUILT/
‘A richly hued portrait
of the human fami-
ly, Quilt of Belonging is a
120 foot (36 metres)
long collaborative tex-
tile art project. Its 263
blocks portray the rich
cultural legacies of all
the First Peoples in Can-
ada and every nation of
the world at the dawn
of the new Millennium.’
The quilt was started in
1998 and it involved
most quilt guilds in
Canada. The project
took over 6 years.
Extensive research,
identifying Canada’s
many cultural faces, has been the foundation of this project. With assistance from the Assembly of First Nations, Depart-
ment of Indian Affairs, Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the native groups themselves, listings were compiled of
our First Peoples: Métis, First Nations and Inuit. Canada’s immigration records showed that as of January 1st, 2000 at
least one person from every country of the world was living in Canada. It took over 6 years for volunteers to find a rep-
resentative from each of the 263 cultural groups on the quilt. Thousands of calls, letters and countless visits were made
to organizations, immigration centres, native bands, churches, embassies, and individual contacts – in short every possi-
ble source was considered. Appeals were also made in the media, needlecraft publications and numerous “in-progress”
exhibitions.
The planning and making of the body of the Quilt, the 1200 piece border, the tassels, the embroidery of names and the
final assembly took place in the project’s Williamstown headquarters and in private homes as volunteers took portions
home to work on. The entire process was exciting, often daunting and sometimes downright scary. A small army of ded-
icated volunteers tackled the challenges of the many supporting tasks, without which the project would have been im-
possible – the administration, writing, accounting, photography, legal work, grant writing, fundraising, travel, cleaning,
exhibition planning and the quiet praying that sustained the project through its journey. Many of these tasks continue as
the Quilt of Belonging tours, as requests come in from around the world. Faithful supporters continue to give of their
time and talents to ensure that the purposes, the dream that became a reality can continue to be shared.
When the project was finished, several guilds showed it at their quilt shows. Guilds had to have the space and height to
display it. The Hamilton Quilters Guild showed it twice at their quilt exhibits and it took several cranes to hoist it each
time.
Since its first showings, the quilt has been lying in storage until Hamilton showcased it for Canada 150 this past summer.

100 YEARS IN STITCHING
Our display 100 YEARS IN STITCHING - CELEBRAT-
ING CANADA’S 150th ANNIVERSARY with 100
placemats has been a tremendous success at the Bell
Homestead in Brantford this past summer season.
What fun we had in June, with our special meeting
held there at the homestead.
The display is being dissembled in the first days of Oc-
tober as the Bell Homestead prepares for its Thanksgiv-
ing celebrations. At the October guild meeting, we will
share information from curator, Brian Woods.
Thank you to everyone. This BHQG Special Project has
increased community awareness of our guild’s quilting
abilities and community involvement.
Sincerely,
Becky McAlister & Sue Baldauf
Mystery Shop Hop
WHEN: OCTOBER 19th 2017 COST: $30.
Our next BHQG Mystery Shop Hop is almost here. We will be embarking on the L&L
Shuttle (Badder Bus Operations Ltd) and our competent driver will drive us to parts
unknown. We will board the bus at 8:15 AM and return for 4:30 PM at the
Abbotts Lane Car Park.
Our bus can accommodate 39 people.
The ‘mysterious bus trip’ only applies to the destinations. There is no mystery when it comes to a guaranteed fun
trip around Ontario – wherever we end up. There will be five shops so we are encouraging people to bring their
lunch to avoid long waits in restaurants and to allow more time for shopping!!!
So far, 21 people have committed but we still have lots of space.
Do not delay! We fill up quickly!
Sign up at the October guild meeting.

QUILT EXPO 2018
ONCE UPON A QUILT - QUILT EXPO 2018
When is Quilt Expo 2018? It will be held October 19-20 2018
Where will it be held? Best Western Plus, Holiday Inn Drive, Brantford.
Who is our Featured Artist? Roseline Dufour
QUESTIONS?
Can we still bring the mug rugs that the members were sewing this summer and given out
to the first 50 paying attendees on both days of our Quilt Expo 2018? If you had for-
gotten to bring it or you have sewn more, you are encouraged to bring the mug rugs to
our BHQG meeting in October. I hear, through the grapevine, that there will be an addi-
tional participation prize.
For the Quilt Display, how many quilts can I submit? For the display, we encourage mem-
bers to bring in a maximum of 5 quilts. We will be asking you to group them in numeri-
cal order from 1 to 5. The first quilt of your choice will be the one that we guarantee to be
hung on the display poles. The others will be displayed in the available spaces. We will
elaborate more on this subject at the BHQG meeting in October.
Thank you to Rocky for presenting the project Tombola. I am certain that she will be show-
ing samples of what can be done for this worthwhile activity next month.
Next Steering Committee Meeting is on Tuesday October 17th from 5:30 - 6:30 at
the Tansley's in St George.
HOW TO MAKE A QUILT LABEL
Iron the fabric you want to use for the label onto the shiny side of an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of freezer paper. (The precut
freezer-paper sheets work best. But you can trim a piece from a roll of freezer paper. Place the freezer-paper sheet into
your printer so that when it feeds through the printer, the label information will print onto the fabric side. Print
the label. It should contain information such as in the samples.
OR you can write your message using a permanent marker that will not
washout. There are several in the market: Microns, Zigs, Sharpies, etc.

BRANT HERITAGE QUILTERS GUILD
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - OCTOBER 12th 2017
YEAR 2016-2017 REPORT
Membership - Aline Chan
We had several new members through the course of 2016-2017. By May 2017, we had 99 members. Door prizes – two
winners each month of half metre of quality quilters fabric. Prizes donated by Aline Chan. Greeters like Joan Tressel
make new members and guests feel welcome.
Program - Roseline Dufour
What an interesting and diverse program we had in 2016-2017! Even though we had many challenges thrown at us, we
were able to shuffle and rearrange a program that met every members quilting skill level. Trunk shows showcased our
members’ work, Ruth Kennedy, Roseline Dufour, Aline Chan and Brenda Miller. Our members did us proud through
the presentation of Sue Baldauf, Leela Chan, Dianne Thomas, Sarah Yetman, Kay Boyd, Joan Tressel, and Mary Cope.
The grand finale was the unveiling of the Members’ Canada 150 anniversary placemats with of course a tour of the Bell
Homestead. Four of our local quilting shops willingly showcased their wares at our guild meeting. We thank Heirloom
Treasures, The Quilt Place, Cherished Pieces and Quilt Junction. We, the program committee, strive to present to our
members a diverse and interesting program.
Sewcial - Each month, the church hall is open on our guild meeting day from 11 AM to 4 PM for a sewing session. The
attendance fluctuates from about 10 - 20 members.
Block of the Month - Joanne Beard
The block of the month program was removed from the portfolio of the Retreat Committee at the June meeting in 2016.
Unfortunately, plans disintegrated and once again Joanne prepared and administered the block of the month program.
We were fortunate to be given permission to use a program designed by Jackie Syer of the Ancaster Guild. She prepared
the patterns and handed them along. Joanne added one block and an additional sashing option. All members were giv-
en photocopied patterns at each meeting.
September 2017 – June 2018 block of the month will be presented by Laurann Gilchrist
Vice President and Special Project - Placemats to Celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017 - Becky McAlistair
Our display 150 YEARS IN STITCHING - CELEBRATING CANADA’S 150th ANNIVERSARY with 150 placemats was a
tremendous success at the Bell Homestead in Brantford this past summer season. Five copies of a binder showing sepa-
rate photos of each placemat with its own story describing the event and year represented. The 150 placemats were dis-
played from May to October 2017.The June guild meeting was held at the Homestead, giving all members a chance to see
the display and tour the grounds.
With the cooperation of curator Brian Woods, this BHQG Special Project has increased community awareness of our
guild’s quilting abilities and community involvement.
Workshops - Lorraine Geraldi
Workshops were held at Smokey Hollow Estates and one at Etonia.
Workshops started off on October 29, 2016 with a UFO workshop. Everyone brought their projects and a great time was
had by all. We had a break for lunch and coffee, tea and treats are provided.
On November 26, 2016, we had a Workshop on ‘Curved Piecing’ by Ruth Kennedy at Etonia Hall. Ruth demonstrated
the art of creating beautiful flowing designs with the use of curved piecing. She also displayed several of her creations
and inspiration. On December 10th, just in time for Christmas, Kay Boyd led the group in the creating of a Prairie Point
Christmas Tree Angel. On January 14th, Roseline Dufour demonstrated the Art of Appliquéé with a lovely butterfly de-
sign. February 18th and March 18th were both UFO workshops. In April our Workshop was led by Sarah Yetman on
Half Square Triangles. Several layout options were provided. It was a very informative workshop. Our last workshop for
the year was May and this was a UFO workshop.
We are looking forward to the upcoming season and more inspirational projects. Continued on next page...

Outreach program. - Rica Maguire
The Outreach Committee with the assistance of guild members was able to give generously to our community over the
past year. We especially thank the family of Betty Stephenson for the donation of fabric.
There were over 70 quilts created and of those, 3 were sold for a total of $430. Pregnancy Centre, Health Unit and BGH
Maternity Ward received 12 baby quilts each as well as a number of bibs and taggy blankets.
Brantford Family and Children’s Services received 20 quilts and 21 pillowcases.
Sheridan Lodge received 5 quilts and 20 pillowcases. Brantford Fire Department received 6 quilts, and 3 quilts were do-
nated to the Soroptimists for a raffle to raise money for their group. As well, we provided 60 placemats to Meals on
Wheels in Brantford and 20 to the St. George program. Stedman’s Hospice was provided with a number of adult bibs,
arm pillows and 2 blankets. We also participated in CQA’s Canada’s 150th celebration by providing 4 quilts to Ronald
MacDonald House.
Bus Trips - Joanne Beard
With CQA delivering their show to the Toronto area two years in a row, we have taken a bus load each June for the last
two years.
We have used the 39 seat bus and were able to fill it this year. Joanne pre-ordered the tickets and they worked out a little
more expensive than anticipated. The discount was small but the convenience was huge.
Roseline Dufour is planning a mystery shop hop bus trip this fall. More details to follow but not where we are going –
that is the mystery!!
Quilt Spring Retreat April 2017- Joanne Beard
The new location and slightly reduced price combined to create a record number of retreat attendees. Camp Trillium
proved to be a great alternative when our previous centre closed, only to reopen without offering us our spot back. The
cabin sleeping arrangements were more rustic but the sewing facilities were greatly improved. Fifty one people signed
up. Most people were happy with the retreat and the program offered.
We are booked to return to Trillium but had to change our weekend due to Easter Sunday falling on our traditional
weekend. We will be at Trillium on March 23 – 25, 2018
BHQG Quilt Racks and Trailer - Sue Baldauf
The trailer remained parked in the Baldauf driveway through the year with no rental agreements for 2016-17. The trailer
still does not have a sticker. Initial contact was made with Brooker Signs but they needed a clear logo design. This design
is now ready through the work of Becky and Sue for the Canada 150th project.
The trailer is also being used as storage for all the extra Quilt Show things.
Library -Kim Callaghan
The library no longer deals with library bucks. New program of auctioning magazines is popular.
Newsletter 2016-17 - Aline Chan
The newsletter went out regularly each month. We have 7 advertisers. One is not returning for the coming
year.
Find the Thimble – to promote reading of the newsletter, we have a hidden thimble. Chocolates and quilters
notions as prizes are popular.
BHQG WEB site - Aline Chan

Publicity - Rose Marie Woodley-Robinson
Each month, Community Events listings were submitted to local newspapers, including: the Expositor, Ayr News, Paris
Star, Brant News, Burford Times, Flamborough Review, Dundas/Ancaster News and Cambridge Times. The purpose of
these listings is to describe the program for that month's meeting, invite guests to join us, and direct readers to the web-
site for further information about our guild.
In February, an illustrated article was printed in a number of the papers, promoting the activities of BHQG and the Paris
guild, and highlighting the special projects planned for Canada's Sesquicentennial.
Sponsorship
The guild continued its sponsorship to the Paris Fall Fair – summer 2017 - with $225 in prizes. Prizes at the 2017 Paris
Fair were given in honour of the following past members of BHQG: Jessie Barker, Pat Pybus, Betty Stevenson, and Patri-
cia Ryckman-Fleming.
BHQG Scholarship 2017 - Sue Baldauf
Because of the very poor response to the past $500 scholarship award application, the award program was restructured
this year. We awarded $50 Proficiency awards to students with the highest marks in Grade 11 and Grade 12 Fashion
courses in each of the Brant secondary schools. The winning students also received a free year’s membership to BHQG.
The awards were well received at the 9 schools.
Complications involve the inconsistencies of dates with some convocation/graduation ceremonies occurring in June and
some in the fall.
Finance - Anne Maguire

clear the bank and for us to close the books as soon as this is done. Banking is done by the Treasurer at Meridian Bank.

Nominations - Roseline Dufour
Every year, we approach the membership to form a committee to entice our members to fill various leadership com-
mittees in our guild. This can be a daunting task for us. Fortunately this year, very few positions had to be filled. Mem-
bers bring new ideas and new ways of doing things to the guild and that is what keeps it alive and interesting. Please
consider volunteering next year!
AGM Recommendations for 2016-2017 Review in August 2017
1. The trailer still does not have a sticker. Initial contact was made with Brooker Signs but they needed a clear logo de-
sign. This design is now ready through the work of Becky and Aline for the Canada 150th project.
2. Our work towards the Celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary has been a success.
3. Efforts were made to coordinate the planning of workshops between the BHQG and Paris Quilting Bees. Confusion
over dates, location issues and costs developed.
Henceforth, the two guilds will organize events independently and continue to invite members from each guild to the
various workshops.
4. No attempts to investigate acquiring a big-name teacher or guest speaker for an event where community and neigh-
bouring guilds may be invited/involved.
AGM Recommendations for 2017-18
1. A stick on sign will be purchased for the trailer. It will have the logo design, Cost not to exceed $300.
2. The QUILT EXPO in Oct 2018 organization and activities will focus on developing more awareness of quilting.
3. A committee will be formed to investigate the possibility of inviting a big-name teacher or guest speaker for an event
where community and neighbouring guilds may be invited/involved. We will focus on Canadian teachers.
