APRIL MEETING

Our speaker is Terry Anderson from Vittoria. Terry began quilting

in 1985, doing workshops at her guild in Ingersoll.

At that time, each block was drafted on paper, templates were

made and traced, then each block was hand-pieced and hand quilt-

ed, all of which was very time consuming. Since then, there have been many happy changes in the world of quilting. Rotary cutters

came along, books and patterns were readily available and the fab-

ric market has exploded. Terry continues to take workshops with her three guilds as well as at National and International shows.

Terry started her long-arm quilting business, "Potter's Creek Quilt-ing Service", in 2007 and has turned her quilting passion into a

career. In February 2013, one of her quilts won the OAAS Provin-

cial Grand Championship.

COMMITTEES

President’s Pieceful Corner

WOW! How time flies when you are

having fun …sewing. In a couple of

weeks from now, we will be embarking

on another BHQG spring retreat. No

cooking, no beds to make, no cleaning up to do... Just sew-

ing our hearts out! So how do you prepare for the retreat?

I generally go to my sewing room and look over my

UFOs, my kits, my patterns and my fabrics. I then divide

everything up in two piles: what I want to do and what

can wait. Decisions, decisions, decisions! After some gru-

elling ‘hours’ in my refuge, I will zero in on four projects

(2 UFO, an untouched kit to make up and fabric for

Aline’s project). Will I get everything done? I doubt it but

the freedom to sew when I want to, to sew for how long I

want to, and to share friendship with you are the main

objectives of the retreat. To me, the success of the retreat

depends on my involvement (sewing, gabbing, sewing,

gabbing, etc.) while there. So, with my sewing machine

and my quilting tools in hand I now begin the countdown

to April 17th.

How many sleeps to go?

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

It is that time of year again when a

Nominating Committee is struck to pre-

pare a slate of candidates for the offices

to be filled. The task at hand now is to review the

current slate and to determine who might be willing

to continue in the current role and who is seeking to

be replaced. This is where we need your help.

If you have pondered the possibility of joining the

BHQG at the Executive level, please speak to Anne

Maguire, Roseline Dufour or Sue Baldauf. They will

be pleased to inform you of what it entails and to

answer your questions. It is not always business. We

do have fun working and organizing together.

If you know of a fellow quilter who would be a good

asset to the team, please talk with one of the three

executive members mentioned above and they will

approach that person.

Working together, we can continue to make BHQG a

great organization!

April is VOLUNTEER MONTH

Be of service - whether you make yourself

available to a friend or co-worker, or you

make time every month to do volunteer work,

there is nothing that harvests

more of a feeling of empow-

erment than being of service

to someone in need. ~Gillian Anderson

QUILTING TIPS - LABELS

I use Heirloom Treasures’ labels printed on my computer. They come in an

envelope of five or twelve sheets and usually one can get two labels from one sheet. Adjust the margins if necessary and always print a sheet on nor-

mal paper to check the settings and keep it in a binder along with a photo of

your quilt. I like to remove the paper from the paper tray, insert the label sheet face down and print on either a full page or half page sheet. Use

a bold print in a larger font such as14 pts. for the body with the head-

ing being done in 16 pts., centered and underlined.

The content of your label should include your inspiration, names of the de-

signer of the pattern, the designer of the fabrics, company of the fabrics, why the quilt was made, was it for a special occasion, a gift or competition. If it is

for yourself, where will it be used? Include the date and place the quilt was

completed and be sure to include the name if someone quilted it for you.

It's also good to include the size of the quilt.

Borrow something from the design on the front of the quilt to add to the

label on the back so it looks like it really belongs to the quilt. Think of some creative ideas to make with your leftover fabric. Use blocks or pieces that

didn't work well on the front - they look just fine on the back. Keep every-

thing documented, think a few generations in the future. Have fun with this as it's your signature.

Should you wish to print labels with designs already on them, there are

many varied designs on the computer like "Labels to Love" and the newly released "Quilt Label Collective CD Volume III" is now available.

YEAH! April is finally here and that means Spring Retreat is just around the corner.

Think BLING when you come to Five Oaks in Paris on Friday April 17 -19.

This year’s SILVER ANNIVERSARY theme is celebrating 25 years of our Spring Retreats. Do you remember when

Spring Retreat was at Apps Mills?

The Mystery Dinner Theatre is back with a story of intrigue, as well as many of your other favourites such as The Mer-

chant Mall, the Block kit (Hourglass) draw, the Welcome Reception, and Auctions. Our retreat quilt project is a variation

of the Hourglass Block.

The Strippers Fabric Exchange: you are to bring 5 strips of fabric, 5” wide and 45” long (the entire width) of a grey print

(no fabric solids, no flannel, no decorator fabric). 100% quilters cotton only. You will exchange 4 strips and one strip will

be for a raffle—the winner can win a bundle of 5” strips, the equivalent of 4 metres.

Thank you for the enthusiastic response to registration. We have 36 people coming to re-

treat this year. Presently, we have a waiting list if you are not one of these lucky 36.

As a registrant, you should now have a registration booklet which includes the kit for the

Hourglass Block. Soon you will receive an email with reminders of the things you should

bring to retreat.

Value of One Member Ten little members standing in a line,

One dislikes the President, then there were nine. Nine ambitious members offered to work late, One forgot her promise, then there were eight.

Eight creative members had ideas good as heaven, One lost enthusiasm, then there were seven.

Seven loyal members got into a fix, They quarreled over programs, and then there were six.

Six members remained with spirit and drive, One moved away, then there were five.

Five steadfast members wished there were more, One became indifferent, then there were four. Four cheeful members who never disagree,

Til one complained of meetings, then there were three. Three eager members! What do they do?

One got discouraged, then there were two. Two lonely members, our rhyme is nearly done, One joined the brigde club, then there was one. One faithful member was feeling rather blue,

Met with a neighbor, then there were two. Two earnest members, each enrolled one more,

Doubling their number, and then there were four.

Four determined members just couldn't wait,

Till each won another, and then there were eight.

Eight excited members signed up 16 more,

In another six verses, there'll be a thousand twenty-four!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Stevenson at her home

on March 3, 2015. Betty was a passionate quilter and member of BHQG. She regularly

attended our guild meetings until she was side-lined by illness. She participated in

many of BHQG workshops and made charity quilts. Betty was part of the library team

for several years—she would help fellow quilters find books, suggest ideas and

shared in fellowship. Her quilts were works of art and she humbly donated them to

our Outreach program. We extend our condolences to the family. She will be missed.
