June Speaker: Elaine Schmitz,

Confessions of a Quilt Judge:

How to Prepare Your Quilt to

Win

A quilter since 1996, Elaine has finished many and

started even more bed quilts, table runners, and wall

hangings. At the Millennium, she became a

professional: quilt shop worker, quilt teacher, and

Northern California Quilt Council judge. She found

her niche as a quilt judge. After several years of judging in guild, county and

district shows, Elaine developed a presentation to help quilters prepare their quilts

to show well and win. Her information will teach you about the following: judges’

traits and tasks; the judging process; visual impact and design; technical merit;

what judges like and don’t like to see and tips to show your quilt at its best; and, keys to judges’ comments and

points to improve. Elaine will also discuss entering competition: why do it, and the do’s, and don’ts. She will also

provide tips for sewing a winning quilt.

President’s Message Let me begin by expressing how honored I feel to be serving as your president for the coming year. Amador

Valley Quilters has been a welcoming and inclusive gathering of dynamic, caring, and creative individuals that

I have treasured being a part of, for the past four years. I appreciate the welcome and support that all the

members and past presidents have offered me, as I step-up to this challenge. I know that together, AVQ will

continue to thrive and share the love of quilts with our community.

A huge thank you goes out to Mary Ann Soby and her team that made the Silent Auction one of the most fun

and profitable events of the year. I cannot begin to imagine the number of hours of work and the amount of

storage this event entailed. Mary Ann led the charge with grace and humor, even with her knee in its brace.

Finally, as we move forward as a new board, I want to remind everyone that AVQ has the special opportunity

to work at the Alameda County Fair. Fair volunteers brought in over $800 to the AVQ coffers last year. This

is an easy way to support our club and enjoy the fair, too. Grab a friend, check your calendars, and sign-up to

support AVQ.

~ With joy and creativity! Kathy Proctor

Unfinished Quilt Challenge Numbers #2, #3 and # 5 on your list have been chosen. Our June meeting will see the first $20 prize drawing!

See the website for details and instructions. How are you and your buddy doing? Participants in the Unfinished

Quilt Challenge have a hot pink dot to add to their AVQ name badge so all will know they’ve taken the challenge.

Let’s all encourage them to finish those quilts!

Block of the Month

April - Please bring your “Paradise Pinwheels” with a gray core and

blades in bright colors blocks to the June meeting.

June BOM “Freedom Star”

June --- we will be making a 12.5” block in red, white and blue.

The star is created using a simple, fast-piecing technique that

creates a complex looking block.

~ Maya Madhavan and Lani Longshore, BOM Co-Chairs

Silent Auction was a HUGE Success – next: June Clearance Sale Thank You! The final figures are still being computed, but we had a very successful fundraiser. Special thanks

to the organizing committee, our carry out service (Frank, Tony, Larry), and Dan-the-Custodian who was very

helpful with the venue logistics.

We do have a few leftovers, so the June Meeting will feature an “As Marked” Clearance Sale - Cash/Check

Only. Prices will be in the $1 to $5 range for almost everything. There will even be some free items, and a

lovely surprise awaiting you! The sale will set up at ground level in front of the stage. Shop before the

meeting; shop during the break.

THE PRICE YOU SEE IS THE PRICE YOU PAY.

~Mary Ann Soby, Silent Auction Chair

Machine Quilting 101 Are you a quilter who hasn’t tried machine quilting your tops? Perhaps you don’t know where to start? Or,

maybe your attempts were not up to your expectations.

At the June general meeting, at 12:30pm Jeanne Brophy and Audrey Hutchinson will guide you through the

process. There are several steps and they may be the answer to unlock a new skill for you. We will have a

sewing machine in action to show how you can do it and answer lots of your questions. We will also show how

to sandwich your top, batting and back. This will be the first of several sessions available to you.

~ Audrey Hutchinson and Jeanne Brophy

Amador Valley Quilters’ Opportunity Quilt

Labyrinth in Blue 84” X 84”

The AVQ Opportunity Quilt could be yours! Every two years a

committee produces a spectacular quilt. The membership is tasked with

selling raffle tickets for a chance to win the quilt. Starting with the June

meeting thirty (30) tickets apiece will be available for pick up. You can

pay $20.00 and give yourself 30 chances to win. You could sell all the

tickets at $1.00 apiece or six (6) or ten (10) for $5.00 or $10.00. Visit

the Opportunity Quilt booth at the meeting to receive your allotted

tickets and a picture of the quilt to aid in marketing the tickets.

A Special “Thank You”

Maya Madhavan's company, Wind River Systems donated $400 to AVQ as part of their philanthropy program.

AVQ is very grateful to Windward, and to Maya for submitting the guild for consideration.

If you know of companies that offer grants or have “outreach” programs, please consider submitting our guild

for consideration. Often these companies are more than willing to provide charitable contributions when asked.

They are typically looking for a cause that aligns with their mission statement or one that serves the

communities where their workforce lives. …it never hurts to ask!

Community Quilts Community Quilts (CQ) will accept quilt tops at this time if you also provide a backing for the top. Backing

need to be 10 inches wider and 10 inches longer than the quilt top. Backing can be pieced together. Any

questions regarding this please call Donna Fay Bower.

If you are making a wheelchair quilt, please put a loop on it. Community Quilts has some pre-cut loops.

CQ will accept all types of quilts each month. CQ still has a couple of kits that will be available in June.

CQ has approximately 6 quilts kits that need to be quilted. Please stop by the Community Quilts table to pick

up kit to quilt. Our kits include a quilt top, batting, backing, fabric for the binding and a label. The kits various

sizes - baby to adult and the dimensions of the quilt are shown on the front of the kit so you know what you are

taking.

Special thanks to Vicki Moore for quilting so many Community Quilts this past month. Also, a special thank

you to Karen Parker for agreeing to be the liaison for FESCO one of the organizations that CQ distributes quilts

during the year.

Just a reminder, if you plan to make a quilt for Community Quilts, CQ has labels for quilts please stop by

Community Quilts table and pick up labels, also the CQ will provide you with batting. CQ is looking for

someone who would be willing to be a contact for batting in the Livermore area, please call me if you are

interested. Please contact one of our members listed below to make arrangements to get the batting you need.
