Principal’s Address Staff Development Day Terms 2 and 3 2021

On Staff Development Day Monday 19 April all staff completed mandatory CPR and Anaphylaxis face to face and online training. The teaching staff undertook professional learning on High Potential and Gifted Education Policy and Teaching Sprints. A very busy and valuable day for staff.

Term 3 Staff Development Day has been moved for Holgate Public School to Friday 17 September to accommodate professional learning presenters and facilities. Please place this into your diaries and calendar. Students will return to school Term 3 Monday 12 July and complete the term on Thursday 16 September.

Good Luck runners!

Good luck Zone Cross Country runners on the new date next Friday 14 May. Enjoy this opportunity and thank you Mrs Kimble, Mrs Dowling and parents for your organisation and support.

Peer Support 2021

Thank you, Miss Nunn, for training our Year 6 leaders in Peer Support and creative and critical thinking skills last week. Miss Nunn has indicated that she was so surprised with the ideas and answers that came out of the training day. We are looking really forward to our Year 6 students taking this learning to the whole school.

Leadership, Evidence, Evaluation and Data (LEED) School 2021

Our school is an identified Leadership, Evidence, Evaluation and Data (LEED) school which is currently working in partnership with Centre for Educational Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) and DoE School Excellence Team to deepen our schools’ practice in identifying implementation strategies to improve teaching and learning. Part of the partnership is ensuring that how we teach your child is based on what we know makes the biggest difference to their learning.

In March this year, the NSW Department of Education released an update of some of the most significant research into effective teaching. This report is called ‘What works best: 2020 update’ and outlines eight evidence-based practices that teachers can use in their classrooms to support improved student learning. It is likely that the ‘What works best: 2020 update’ will inform the teaching and learning in your child’s school. Below is a summary of the eight ‘What works best’ practices for effective teaching, including some conversation tips to help you support these practices at home. We suggest that you use just one set of questions at a time with your child.

Thank you Mrs Gordon (Principal)

School News Holgate Home Reading

Our home reading program is getting revamped! From Week 5, home reading will be called R.A.D. - Read and Discover! All students from K-6 will be gifted a special book bag from the school to help motivate them to read. Students who return completed home reading cards will be given a new look R.A.D. certificate; extra play for each card they bring in; and, will have their photo put in our school newsletter. Two of our Year 6 Parliamentarians, Zia and Lucia, have set up a drawing competition that students can enter with their ideas for new designs for our R.A.D. logo. Check out the drawing competition flyer!

Chickenpox and Covid-19

Unfortunately we need to inform you that chickenpox has been reported in more classrooms. Anyone who has not had chickenpox or been vaccinated in the past can develop chickenpox.

Chickenpox often starts without the classic rash but instead with fever, headache, sore throat or stomach ache and generally feeling unwell. The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs. The rash appears over three to four days. Symptoms usually occur two weeks after exposure to the virus. Most people recover without complications, but sometimes the infection can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and inflammation of the brain. Rarely, the infection can be fatal. Children who have been vaccinated can still get chickenpox but it is usually mild and less contagious than in an unvaccinated person.

Please be on the lookout for a rash and if your child contracts chickenpox you will be advised by your doctor of when they can return to school. Department of Education policy dictates that students with chickenpox remain at home until cleared by their doctor.

We would like to remind you that under DoE policy if your child is showing any cold/flu symptoms it is necessary for them to be tested and remain at home until we sight a negative covid test. Due to the recent updates to NSW restrictions we ask that you remain vigilant.

Thank you for your support and time in this matter.

Green Dream Team News

Turn Bread Bags into School Play Equipment

Further to last week’s newsletter advertisement we have signed up with Wonder to recycle bread bags and tags. All brands of bag and tag are accepted. Pikelet and muffin packaging is also acceptable. We'll earn points to redeem new sports equipment for our school. Please drop bread bags and tags to the front office. Thank you!

Debating

On Monday the Year 6 Debaters faced their first debate of the season hosted by Lisarow Public School. The topic selected was 'That every class in primary school should adopt a cat or dog as a class pet.' Although they didn't win the overall debate they were commended for their excellent public speaking skills and well thought out arguments. We look forward to seeing Year 5's first debate next week hosted by Brooke Avenue Public School.

BL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) Super Gally Day

Students enjoyed their gally rewards sessions on the last day of Term 1. Some of the sessions included sport, disco, BYOD and Art. All students seemed to enjoy the session they chose. Gally also came and visited the students prior to their rewards sessions, which is always a highlight for all students.

Our whole school PBL focus for this fortnight is being a strong, safe, respectful learner while using the bottom playground and play equipment. Teachers are on the lookout for students being strong, safe, respectful learners while using these areas.
