Wow! 2015 is quickly headed toward the end of year holiday season! It seems like we all just met at

the annual meeting last month! A lot has happened this year at the PIPOA but I thought I would focus

this month on several of the most current issues; 1) finances, 2) island beautification and 3) our commu-

nity socialization events.

Finances: To control risk during this time the PIPOA board recently took action, based on input from our financial

advisors, and increased cash equivalent positions in the Padre Isles Property Owners Association portfo-

lio. Per Ted Oakley at Herndon Plant Oakley…”Many of our time-tested proprietary market supply/

demand indicators are not blinking positive. Given our longstanding conservative investment style, it is

times of uncertainty like the present when it’s prudent to be more cautious. Nonetheless, we are pre-

pared to deploy current high cash levels into fundamentally attractive quality investments when more

favorable conditions exist. Today’s stock markets are extremely volatile, and returns year-to-date are

negative. There will likely be more attractive investment opportunities ahead, but it could be farther out

in time. We don’t have that answer just yet, but it will play out eventually. Our objective and investment

strategy is to protect our investors’ assets first, and that is what we are doing.” The third quarter of 2015 was a nasty one as all major stock indices got hit virtually at the same

time. Meanwhile, global stock markets have lost over $12 trillion in value just since the middle of June of

this year. Uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy, coupled with a slowdown in world-

wide economic growth, has been the big catalyst for equity market declines. Through Kim Sheets at UBS Pain Weber Investments, we have also purchased some 2-year laddered

CD’s in addition to moving our equity positions from stocks to cash. The Board believes these actions

are conservative and will protect our investments.

Island Beautification: One of our larger projects has been completed and the overwhelming majority of comments we re-

ceive regarding the Whitecap Medians and upgraded fencing has been positive. Continued maintenance

including replacement plantings, picking up of loose rocks and periodic weeding is necessary to keep the

medians looking great. If you see someone working to keep our property maintained, please give them

a honk, wave and a “thank you”. Please stay out of the medians (tires, pedestrians, etc.) as this is a

major issue of rocks spreading to the adjacent curbs and streets. A second major initiative is currently being discussed and will likely start within the next month or

so. That is…trimming of the 118 palm trees which are located on both sides of the highway coming off

the JFK Causeway and onto The Island. It’s a big job, but we believe the “first impression” for visitors

and our residents is important. We plan to continue with the maintenance on a more frequent basis to

maintain a fresh and more manicured look to the entry. The landscape design consultant is also quickly approaching the end of the design phase for the up-

grades to Gypsy Park (Billish Park, near the PIPOA Offices). After about a half a year of unfortunate

setbacks, it appears the project will be let for competitive bids around the first of 2016. Stay tuned as

we have very high hopes that this area will be a place where our residents can finally enjoy without stick-

ers and bare sand! (continued on page 2)

ISLAND COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS SINGALONG

The La Posada Boat Parades are set for Friday, December 12 in the

North Channel and Saturday, December 13 in the South Channel. These boat parades are one of the highlights of the holiday season

and thousands of toys are collected by the Marines for Toys For

Tots. Scuttlebutts hosts a fund raising event which is set for Decem-

ber 1, starting at 5 PM. There is also a contest for the best decorated houses., with awards

for best street-side decorations as well as best water-side decora-

Community Socialization Events: This year has been very interesting, starting with the annual meeting held in January. What the board confirmed is there are many people

with a lot of great ideas and passion about how The Island should live up to the charge listed in our Articles of Incorporation, which in part

states “The corporation is organized exclusively for the promotion of social welfare…” and “the preservation thereof as a marina type commu-

nity of the highest quality…”. We continue to receive requests and kudos throughout the year regarding building relationships and sharing of

ideas and information across the many subdivisions and with our residents. We have also seen an increase in the amount of volunteering and

participation in PIPOA sponsored events (litter critter, Taste of the Island, Fourth of July fireworks, Paddle for Parkinsons, Island Art Walk, He-

roes on the Water, to name a few.). Stay tuned for further details!!! We are currently planning a “night at the park” sometime in the first week of December. The night will be

fun filled and will include things like: hot dogs and hamburgers, hot chocolate and smores for the kids, a movie on the big screen for the entire

family and some “yet to be determined” fun competition between the subdivisions. We hope to see a lot of people show up to meet their

neighbors and to share this special time of the year! If you have ideas, would like to donate or participate in the planning, please contact May-

beth at the office. Have a great 4th quarter of the year and feel free to reach out to the board members with ideas, constructive criticism and praise! We appre-

ciate your input and look forward to continuing to work with you to improve the quality of life on The Island

LA POSADA

BOARD OF DIRECTORS POSITIONS

There are three positions up for election in March 2015. Two positions

are for a term of 3 years and one position will be for 2 years. Candidates

must be members of the POA in good standing, and at least 18 years of age.

Statements of candidacy need to be received in the POA office by Novem-

ber 15th. You may email them to: maybeth@pipoa.net We will publish the statements in the winter newsletter which also contains

the ballot. Your statement should include your background as well as why

you want to be elected to the Board.

This picture is a day’s worth of canal cleaning. You might notice

dock boards in this load. It is quite common for our cleanup per-

son to pick up boards every day that he is out. Please check your

dock to make sure it is in good repair—for your safety! As a condition for us to even have our canals, we are required to

do water quality testing from May 1 to October 31. We have to

file the reports with TCEQ as well as the Corps of Engineers. We did test for bacteria several times since some news reports

indicated bacteria levels were high in the Laguna Madre and Cor-

pus Christi Bay. While we did have 2 areas that were high, they

have since dropped back to the acceptable levels. Keeping our

canals clean is something we all need to work on.

Island resident and Paddle organizer—Ramona Singleterry sent the following: We raised approximately $17,000 and about 200 paddlers enjoyed live music, BBQ, door prizes, a raffle and Mayor Nelda

Martinez came out to issue a Proclamation that September 5th, 2015 was Paddle For Parkinson’s Day in Corpus Christi!

However, the real achievement was providing HOPE to those afflicted with the disease. Thank you to the Padre Island

community and the POA for the support!

The City glass recycling scheduled for December 12

at the wastewater treatment plant, west end of

Whitecap. The traffic signal for the Aquarius/Park Road 22 inter-

section has been approved. Construction should start

in January, 2016. Park Road 22 bridge permit requires a public hearing

which is tentatively scheduled for January 16. Watch

the MOON for the official announcement and plan to

attend to support the bridge. Litter Critter will only be on the 2nd Saturday for

November, December, January & February, at the

west end of Whitecap.

Please note the change in Litter Critter for the “winter” months. The Critter will only be available the SECOND Saturday of November, December, January and February. March will go back to 2 collections per

month—the second and fourth Saturdays. Also check the City news area for brush pickup. Setting out prior to the posted date can be costly. The City gives

you a warning if it is setout too early. The fine can be $2000. They changed the program. It used to be they

would pick it up and charge you on your utility bill. They don’t do that any more. We are adding an orchard area to Douden Park. If you have a fruit tree you would like to donate that is not too

large, please call the office.
