Our Fall season is kicking off with the introduction of new faculty and staff, innovative programs, new classes, spiffed up studios and even more opportunities to be creative and joyful!

This summer, we welcomed more than 300 young artists for the 10 weeks of ArtCamp. Their joyous energy and boundless creativity echoes throughout the year. I am grateful to be able to work with artists from 4 years old to 94 years old, and to truly bring the joy of art into so many lives every day.

You will notice improvements to our studios, thanks to generous donations from many kind and devoted members. Please join us in improving our facilities by keeping our new equipment organized and clean, and following the example of our ArtCampers and cleaning up after every project.

Our School of Art is a community treasure, and my goal is to provide the best in fine arts instruction and programs in northern Palm Beach County.

As we celebrate our Environmentally Engaged exhibition, we'd like to remind you of the ArtCenter's commitment to keeping the School of Art a sustainable and eco-friendly operation. We strive to be plastic-free, as we recycle, upcycle and re-use every day. We are replacing our plastic soap dispensers with bars of soap, and we encourage everyone to use canvas bags, reusable water bottles (we now have three water coolers at the school to refill your bottles), as well as ceramic or glass cups and bowls.

I am here to serve our arts community, and I appreciate being in the company of such inspiring and creative people. Please stop by to share your ideas and experiences, as we continue to flourish as a local, nonprofit, community-driven arts mecca in South Florida!

Here's to an inspired Season of Creativity!

4 Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum, Gallery & School of Art Early Fall/Fall 2015

The Lighthouse ArtCenter is sharing the joy of art with at-risk children at the Head Start program in West Palm Beach.

Through this partnership, preschool children who may not otherwise be exposed to the arts, will benefit from professional art instruction from our fac-ulty. With a dynamic curriculum, includ-ing music and multi-media arts projects, children will enjoy onsite arts program-ming throughout the school year.

Exposure to the arts at a young age has been proven to benefit children’s success in school, as well as build self-esteem. Our instructors and staff are thrilled to be involved in this inspiring program.

We are excited to welcome back the Sacred Art Tour of the Drepung Gomang Monastery! Eight Tibetan refugee Buddhist monks will create a sand mandala and share Tibetan traditions with our community at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum from January 25 to January 31, 2016.

Last year, more than 1,500 visitors enjoyed the Dalai Lama-sanctioned tour here in Tequesta. The mandala is created with naturally dyed sand from India; and the monks pains-takingly create the intricate design grain-by-grain.

We will enjoy culinary evenings, rock painting and sand mandala workshops and traditional Tibetan dance presentations with the monks.

The dissolution ceremony teaches us the value of impermanence and letting go. Once again, we will join the monks at the Jupiter Inlet Light-house as they offer the sand as a blessing to our waterways.

This year, Director of Education, Cynthia Trone, visited the monks at the Drepung Gomang Center for Engaging Compassion in Kentucky, and attended the Dalai Lama’s 80th Birthday celebration and Global Compassion Summit in California.

She says, ”the Tibetan Buddhist monks have taught us all a deep sense of peace, joy and positivity that is vital in our crazy world. A sense of true kindness, as well as the intercon-nection of all humanity, is clearly evi-dent in their presence. It is a delight and an honor to learn from them.”

Community Outreach

In our ArtReach program, we offer art instruction and materials to individu-als who would otherwise have little opportunity to participate in the arts. We serve students with mental and/or physical handicaps, as well as those who are economically disadvantaged or elderly.

Our programs bring the joy and heal-ing of artistic expression. Our compre-hensive curriculums address the specif-ic needs of these students. In 2015-16, we will have the privilege of work-ing with Martin County Special Needs, New Day Adult Care, El Sol Community Resource Center, Jupiter Medical Cen-ter, Head Start, RiverBend Academy at Sandy Pines, VA Medical Center, as well as numerous local schools and special needs programs.

The positive impact this program has had on the individual students and our community is remarkable, and would not be possible without the continued support of our members, donors and grants.

One JupiterIn honor of Onesimo Marcelino Lopez-Ramos, the 18-year old Guatemalan who was murdered in Jupiter in April, we celebrate Mayan art and culture.

Through kindness, art, compassion, community collaborations and conver-sation, we hope to bring a sense of meaning to this shocking hate crime. Together with El Sol, Jupiter Inlet Light-house, Town of Jupiter, Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, Jupiter High School and concerned citizens, we are raising awareness and respect of our Guate-malan neighbors.

On September 18, Brother Towns will be shown at the Jupiter Community Center. This film chronicles the connec-tion of Jacaltenango, Guatemala, and Jupiter.

We suffer from the same violence and prejudice in cities across our nation; we hope that with respect and the power of art, we can come together as OneJupiter.

Adding the Figure to Your Landscapes with Michele ByrneJanuary 28 & 29; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $350This class will teach how to add the figure in a natural, fluid way and how to simplify the subject by breaking it down into basic

shapes. Other topics covered during class will include: how light falls onto a subject and its effect on color and value in the landscape, and how to add drama with your brush strokes and palette knife work. Daily demos followed by student painting time and a critique.

Painting the Figure in Studio & En Plein Air with Eli Cedronefebruary 18 & 19; 9 to 5 p.m. $300Learn the fundamentals of painting the fig-ure en plein air and in studio. Topics covered will be: understanding direct, ambient and reflected light; how sunlight affects color; seeing color and value as a unit; and captur-

ing the features of the model to create a likeness. You'll learn how to break down the fundamental form of the figure into large shapes or masses. There will be instruction on how to mix clean color in the correct temperature and value in order to create the illusion of light on the figure. Bold Brush Plein Air with Shelby KeefeMarch 7 & 8; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $350One of the biggest challenges for plein air painters is to successfully narrow down infinite amounts of detail and express the essence of a scene. Students will learn and apply strategies for simplification, value accuracy, compositional uniqueness and much more.  Shelby will share her method

of applying complimentary colors as an underpainting to the white canvas, and jumping in with both feet to grab the light before it changes. She will demonstrate her technique every morning and then help each student one-on-one throughout the rest of the day.

demystifying Social Media Seminar with Lori McNee Sun., March 13; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. $35 advance; $45 at doorSpecially designed for artists and entrepreneurs

She focuses on the most effective use of Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, Pinterest, Stumbleupon and blogging. Her step-by-step approach through the social media labyrinth cuts through the confusion, utilizing the platforms to build business and fans. As a painter in the Plein Air Festival, Lori will also address questions from fellow artists.

Jim McVickerMarch 14 to 16; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. $450The workshop will start with a demo that will show his process for starting a landscape, Jim will work over the entire canvas in order to develop the painting as a unified whole, working on land, trees, water and sky so the paint-

ing grows with a cohesive feeling and not as separate parts. During the demo, Jim will describe his process. Jim will walk around and work with each artist, one on one. Jim is known to be very available and open to any questions, and will help and/or demonstrate how he would solve any problems you might be having.

Jim Rigg is a graduate of Wichita State University with a Fine Arts degree in Graph-ics. He is an accomplished watercolorist with an innova-tive and unique style. "I enjoy experimentation, believing it extends my boundaries, both in conceptual and contempo-

rary watercolor techniques. My finished paintings are projections of my imagination, and this, for me, is the great adventure of painting: the exploitation of areas where the imagination can take over and

intuitively guide the hand. The challenges to me are inventive compositions, varied textures and color exploration - offering each painting a sense of time, space and solitude."

Elio Camacho was three years old when his family moved from Madeira Island, about 540 miles southwest of Lisbon, Portugal, to California’s Silicon Valley. As a youngster, he developed a keen interest in American comic books and became an incessant doodler. He didn’t necessarily think about a career in art back then. In 1997, on somewhat of a whim, he began taking life-drawing classes at the Palo Alto Art League. And the rest is history, as they say. Camacho also studied with Ovanes Berberian and those lessons still guide his creative process today.

Michele Byrne paints in oils and watercolors. She has two painting books published: The Art of Conversation with an introduction by Constance Battle MD.; The Art of Conversation: Manhattan with an introduction by Meredith Lewis (Editor of American Artist Watercolor Magazine). Michele has also had her paintings included in sales at Freeman’s Auction House in Philadelphia. She is a nomi-nated member of the Salmagundi Club in NYC, Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionists Society. Byrne’s work was featured in an eight-page article written by Steve Doherty in the June/July 2013 Issue of PleinAir Magazine.

Eli Cedrone graduated from the School of Art & Design from Suffolk University in Boston. She decided to skip the harsh New England winters and began her career in Bermuda at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising. She took a brief sabbatical from her job to study art in Florence, Italy. After nearly five years on "the rock," she developed a case of island fever, and set her sights on California. For the next ten years, she lived in Laguna Beach, working as an illustrator and magazine designer. Marriage and the birth of her daughter Olivia brought her back to her roots in Boston, where she continued studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and began painting full-time. Eli returns often to Bermuda and California to paint and teach workshops.

Since 1981, Jim has been winning “Best of Show” awards and his work is in galleries and public collections across the county. His film, A Way of Seeing (2009), is a beloved classic documentary for painters. In his early twenties, he began studying art history, French impressionist landscapes, life drawing and painting with accomplished artists. He and his wife, artist Terry Oats, have studios in rural Loleta, Calif. where they paint daily “trying to capture the light, atmosphere, space and the mysterious beauty all around us.”
