Aidan has paid tribute to the Allport Action Alliance, a team of local

residents campaigners, after it was announced that the controversialscheme to redevelop Beecroft Road car park into a shopping andleisure complex is to be scrapped. The decision by Labour-led Cannock Chase District Council to call offthe development came on the same day that Aidan presented apetition to Parliament signed by nearly 3,000 local residents whichcalled on the Council to listen to the people and halt the plans whichpotentially included Compulsory Purchase Orders and demolition oflocal family homes.Local residents had already reported to Aidan that their house priceswere being affected by the uncertainty surrounding the site, and manyfelt they were left unfairly in limbo and could not make plans for thefuture, without knowing what would be happening to their homes.Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday Aidan said: "The

petition, along with a petition on similar terms, has been signed bymore than 2,600 of my constituents and the constituents ofneighbouring colleaguesa number that is far higher than the mere963 respondents to the council's narrow consultation. I pay tribute to

Allport Action Alliance and, in particular, to Helen and Robert Blaikiefor all their hard work in collecting signatures and standing up againstthese horrendous plans, which would see their family homesdemolished for this vanity project of the council."

Commenting on the decision by Cannock Chase District Council toscrap the scheme, Conservative Group Leader Paul Snape said: "Thecouncil has chosen to ignore the thousands of people who made theiropposition to these proposals clear by signing the petition calling forthem to be scrapped. But, even the council's own limited figuresshowed an overwhelming majority opposed to any development andthe demolition of houses that it would bring."I am delighted therefore that the council has decided to cancel thisfoolhardy scheme. Common sense has prevailed, but it has only

prevailed because of the campaign organised by local residents, theConservative councillors for the area and our MP, Aidan Burley."
