Walsall – Rugeley Chase Lineelectrification

Aidan with Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin MP duringhis recent visit to Cannock Chase.

Aidan is pleased to announce a programme of public 'drop in'sessions arranged by Network Rail, to inform the public and localbusinesses of the imminent start of works on the £30 million ChaseLine Electrification Scheme, between Walsall and Rugeley TrentValley.

Aidan was instrumental in securing the funding for this scheme after securing an Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons on 14June 2012, when he personally and directly argued the business caseto the then Rail Minister, Theresa Villiers MP. A copy of Aidan'sspeech in Hansard can be read here.

Responding to Mr Burley in the House of Commons, the Rail Minister then said "I pay tribute to the work of my hon. Friend, who has thisevening put the case for that improvement to the House with passion, clarity and detail."  Following the debate Aidan immediately secured a private meetingwith the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, and further put the business case to him for the £30 million of funding required, which the Treasury would need to give to the Department of Transportto fund the scheme. Commenting today, Aidan said: "I am delighted that after twenty years

of inaction and dithering from Cannock Chase District Council and theformer Labour MP, who never held an Adjournment debate in order to

put the case for electrification of our Chase line in eighteen years, in just two years I managed to secure funding for this scheme from theGovernment. Local efforts from our Council, whatever they were, did not achieve electrification and went unheeded for nearly two decades. That is why I am proud to have taken practical steps to turn thisdream into a reality. Electrifying the Chase line will transform journeysfor my constituents who catch the train to work or visit Birmingham for leisure. I welcome Network Rail's 'drop in' sessions and encourage all my constituents to attend."  The drop-in publicity events open to all local people will be held onand at the following venues:

Wednesday 2nd October Cannock, Civic Centre - 10:30am to 7:00pm

Thursday 3rd October Rugeley Leisure Centre, 10:30am to 7:00pm

A third session will be held at Walsall Civic Centre, on Friday 4th

October, 10:30am to 7:00pm.

Beecroft Road homes saved followingpetition presented to House of Commons

by Chase MP Sarah Giles, Connect Cannock

Monday 16th September 2013 Cannock Chase MP Aidan Burleypresented a petition to the Houseof Commons on the 11th of September against CannockChase District Council plans to redevelop the Beecroft Road sitewhich could have seen numerous homes affected. You can view the video here.

The Council later scrapped the decision to go ahead with the plans. The decision by Cannock Chase District Council to call off thedevelopment came on the same day that Aidan presented a petition toParliament signed by nearly 3,000 local residents which called on theCouncil to listen to the people and halt the plans which potentiallyincluded Compulsory Purchase Orders and demolition of local familyhomes. Local residents had already reported to Aidan that their house priceswere being affected by the uncertainty surrounding the site, and manyfelt they were left unfairly in limbo and could not make plans for the

future, without knowing what would be happening to their homes. Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday Aidan said: “Thepetition, along with a petition on similar terms, has been signed bymore than 2,600 of my constituents and the constituents of neighbouring colleagues—a number that is far higher than the mere963 respondents to the council’s narrow consultation. I pay tribute to

Allport Action Alliance and, in particular, to Helen and Robert Blaikiefor all their hard work in collecting signatures and standing up againstthese horrendous plans, which would see their family homesdemolished for this vanity project of the council”

Aidan on Government successes as Party

Conference approaches Chase MP Aidan Burley has highlighted Government achievements inCannock Chase and the West Midlands region with ConservativeParty Conference just a few days away. Since the General Election, in Cannock Chase the number of JSAclaimants has fallen from 2,769 in April 2010 to 1,800 in August 2013

 – a drop of 1.6%. Youth unemployment in Cannock Chase whichstood at over 10% in April 2010 has fallen sharply and now stands at6.2%.

As a result of this Conservative led Government's personal taxallowance changes, in April 2013, 34,364 people in Cannock Chasereceived an income tax cut with 1,718 local people being taken out of tax altogether. In the West Midlands region as a whole, figures show that 37,000more people are in work since the General Election. 1.98 millionpeople in the West Midlands have also seen their personal income taxcut due the raising of the personal allowance. In addition, 158,000people have started apprenticeships in the region since May 2010.

Commenting Aidan said: “We are starting to see better times inCannock Chase and Staffordshire after some difficult years. “We know that there is still work to be done, but we are on the right

path now. Growth is up and unemployment is down with privatesectors jobs and apprenticeships starting in record numbers. “Another Labour government would just offer higher taxes, further

borrowing and an Energy policy which will cost hardworking peoplemore. “The Prime Minister will be highlighting this at the Conservative Party

Conference in Manchester next week.”

‘No’ vote for shops plan on

Cannock car park site Express & Star

Friday 13th September 2013

Controversial multi-millionpound plans to transforma car park into a shoppingcomplex could be put onhold after more than 50 per cent of surveyed residents said they didnot want it. Beecroft Road car park in Cannock has been earmarked for development by Cannock Chase Council. Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and Next were initially mooted aspossible shops which could move into the complex, before market

tests found the big names were unlikely to be attracted to the town inthe current economic climate. The land is now being lined up for mixed use, including restaurantsand cafés. If plans went ahead, compulsory purchase orders could bemade to acquire land in Allport Road – meaning people’s homes couldbe demolished.

A majority of Cannock Chase residents have opposed the plans, according to results from a public consultation, with 58.4 per cent of respondents saying they did not want the scheme. This compared to 31.3 per cent who favoured the plans.

Council leader George Adamson says he will recommend theauthority no longer pursues the development at this time. “The council will take on board the results of this consultation and Iwill be recommending to cabinet that we respect the views of thosewho responded and will, therefore, not actively pursue thedevelopment of this site at this time,” he said. The consultation, in which 962 people took part, will now be presentedto Cannock Chase Council’s cabinet on October 17.

A petition containing more than 2,600 signatures was gathered byresident action group Allport Action Alliance opposing the plans, presented to Parliament by Cannock MP Aidan Burley. Mr Burley said: “Common sense has prevailed due to the acts of localresidents.”
