Aidan in Parliament:Aidan questions Health Secretary overGovernment response to Mid StaffordshireNHS Public Inquiry Tuesday 19 th November 2013

Click on the image above to watch Aidans question to the HealthSecretary.

The full text of the exchange was as follows: Aidan Burley (Cannock Chase, Conservative): We now know thatpoor care was allowed to continue at Mid Staffs because staff weresimply too afraid to speak out and, if they did, they were ignored or,worse, their careers were threatened. The high death rates at Staffordhospital were not taken seriously enough at the time and were merelyexplained away rather than used as an alarm signal that should havetriggered further investigations. There was clearly a culture of fear among NHS staff, many of whom witnessed the appalling care of myconstituents. Will my right hon. Friend make it his legacy to instil aculture of candour and openness in the NHS whereby concerns areacted on and high standardised mortality ratios are no longer brushedunder the carpet to protect the NHSs reputation but are insteadproperly investigated so that patient safety finally comes first? Jeremy Hunt (South West Surrey, Conservative): My hon. Friend isabsolutely right. These problems of high mortality rates date back verymany years, and nothing, or too little, was done to sort them out. Wemust therefore make sure that we have a system where that cannothappen. Concealing poor care does not protect the reputation of theNHS, because in the end it gets out and destroys public confidence. Ihope his constituents will feel that todays announcements will create anew culture of openness and transparency that gives them confidence,so that if these awful things were ever to happen againwe hope theydo notwe would find out quickly and action would be taken.

EVENT REMINDER!Aidan organises Hednesford drop insession on Chase Line electrification

Aidan is reminding local people of an additional pub lic 'drop in'session this Saturday, atHednesford, on the 30m ChaseLine electrification project. The session will be held thisSaturday 23 rd November 2013between 10am - 2pm at theTesco Supermarket located atVictoria Street in Hednesford ,and follows on from similar sessions held earlier this month inCannock, Rugeley and Walsall.

Aidan worked to secure this additional date with Network Rail after

hearing about concerns from Hednesford Town Council and othersthat local people in Hednesford were not being kept fully informedabout the multi-million pound project. Official figures show t hat Hednesford is the second busiest station onthe Chase Line and experience d an 18% increa se in passengers in2011/12 and now generates nearly 180,000 passenger journeys ayear. This 'drop in' session will allow the public and busi nesses anopportunity to meet Network Rail staff and find out more about theproject and the benefits it will bring to the town's residents and

businesses. While the Chase Line electrification project had been a longstandingaspiration of local authorities along the route for over 20 years, it wasonly following Aidan's personal intervention in organising anadjournment debate in the House of Commons on 14 June 2012,where he directly argued the business case to the then Rail Minister,Theresa Villiers MP, that funding for this important transport projectwas s ecured. Following the debate Aidan immediately secured a private meetingwith the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne and further putthe business case to him for the 30 million of funding required, whichthe Treasury would need to give to the Department of Transport tofund the scheme. Commenting today, Aidan said: "I am delighted that after twenty yearsof we ll-meaning but unsuccessful attempts by others to deliver this

projec t, my personal intervention led to 30m of Govern ment fundsbeing secured to deliver this important scheme. I am proud to havetaken practical steps to turn this dream into a reality. Electrifying theChase line will transform journeys for my constituents who catch thetrain to work or visit Birmingham for leisure, and marks the biggest improvement to passenger services since the line was reopened in1989. I welcome Network Rail's agreement to hold this additional 'dropin' session at Tesco in Hednesford and would encourage all my constituents to attend."

Aidan to complete Santa Dashin aid of Newlife Foundation

Aidan at the launch of the 2013 Santa Dash. Cannock Chase MP Aidan Burley is preparing to complete Cannock'sannual Santa Dash to help disabled children with Newlife Foundation. Starting from Cannock Leisure Centre and finishing at Bank Bar &lounge, Aidan will run a mile dressed as Father Christmas.

All of the Dashing Santas need to raise as much as they can insponsorship. All of the money raised goes directly to Newlife, and isused to help disabled children and their families right here in

Staffordshire, many in Cannock Chase, with specialist equipment andsupport.

One of the children Newlife supported with the funds raised in lastyears dash was Cody Aldred, from Cannock, who you may just beable to see in the picture above and on Aidans JustGiving page, here .

Aidan met Cody at last years event and Cody (and her Dad!) havesince started the DADS (Dads and Disabilities Support) Group that

Aidan visited for their first annual curry night a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to the help that Newlife provided to their family through theSanta Dash, they have now been inspired and empowered to set up a

whole support network for dozens of local families who have childrenwith needs that make life just a bit more difficult to manage. There is still time to enter the event and more details can be foundhere .

Aidan welcomes new figures showing start-up loans supporting entrepreneurs inCannock Chase

Aidan has welcomed new figures thatshow the Government's Start-Up LoansScheme has so far helped 10entrepreneurs in Cannock Chase set uptheir own business. Across the country10,000 Start-Up Loans have now beenawarded, worth a total of 50 million. Commenting Aidan said: "Because of the financial crisis we inherited,

people who want to set up a new business have often found it hard toget a loan. This has prevented people with ideas and aspiration from

putting their business plans into action. "Today's figures show that Start-Up Loans are changing that - here inCannock Chase 43,425 has been lent to ten budding entrepreneurs. This will ensure that all their potential and ideas don't go to waste. "New businesses are the lifeblood of a healthy economy, helping tocreate jobs and growth. That's why we will keep supporting hardworking people who aspire to start their own businesses."

Aidan encourages Cannock Chaseresidents to take up the Green Deal The Green Deal is a scheme that can help you make energy-savingimprovements to your home or business, for example:

! insulation - eg solid wall, cavity wall or loft insulation! heating! draught-proofing! double glazing! renewable energy generation - eg solar panels or heat pumps

You can make energy-saving improvements to your home or businesswithout having to pay all the costs in advance. You have to pay back the cost of the improvements over time becausethe Green Deal is a loan, not a grant. However, the savings on your energy bills after youve made the improvements should cover therepayment of the loan. You can also choose to pay for improvements in advance using GreenDeal providers and certified installers. Some of the ways you could improve your home:

How to get a Green Deal Follow these steps to work out if the Green Deal is for you and what todo next.

    1. Check if your home or business is likely to benefit from theGreen Deal .

    2. Get a Green Deal assessment of your property to see whatimprovements you can make and how much you could save onyour energy bills.

    3. Decide how youll pay if you go ahead with the work. Check

your options in the Ways to pay section below.

    4. Depending on how youre paying, discuss with a Green Dealinstaller or Green Deal provider what work you want doneand whether the Green Deal is right for you.

    5. An installer carries out the work. Your home or business

    becomes more energy efficient.

Ways to pay There are 2 main ways to pay for the improvements. You can have a loan for the improvements so you dont pay for them inadvance. Youll pay off the loan in instalments added to your electricity bill . Your loan and repayment rate is given in the contractyou sign with the provider. This is known as your Green Deal FinancePlan. You need to contact a provider . You can pay in advance. You need to contact an installer to do this. In both cases you can apply for cashback if you have had anassessment and accepted a quote from a provider. (So even if yourepaying in advance, you need to contact a provider not an installer.) You can use a combination of payment methods. Rented accommodation You must get your tenants permission before you go ahead withimprovements if youre a landlord, and if youre a tenant you must getyour landlords permission to make improvements - this also applies tosocial housing. Green Deal mark

All Green Deal organisations must be authorised - look for thequality mark. Get help Free and impartial advice about the Green Deal is available. Call theEnergy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 or visitwww.gov.uk/greendeal .

Burley welcomes announcement of 442million for roads in West Midlands

Aidan has today welcomed the announcement of roads investment for 2014. In total, 1.9 billion will beinvested in Britain's roads in 2014, supporting nearly10,000 jobs. In the West Midlands, 442 million will be invested in 29 schemesunder construction in 2014, supporting 920 jobs. Schemes receivinginvestment include the A5 Churchbridge Junction where over 2million will be spent on improvements to the carriageways at variousapproaches and sections of the roundabout to increase capacityduring peak periods. This will help reduce delays during the morningand evening rush hour.

Over 102 million is also being spent on the M6 Junction 10a-13Smart Motorway Scheme designed to create additional capacity andhelp relieve congestion. Commenting on the announcement, Aidan said: "Under Labour our area lost out on decent investment in roads. Today's announcement of 442 million of investment for roads in the West Midlands will help todeliver the modern infrastructure we need locally. Here in Cannock Chase, local people and businesses will benefit from the 2 million that is being invested to help improve the Churchbridge Junction."

Aidan in the papers:Government response is turning point Simon Stone, Express & Star Wednesday 20 th November 2013 MPs today heralded theGovernments response tothe Francis report as a

turning point for care andtransparency of the health service across the country. Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy said the string of new meas ures wouldmean the efforts of campaigners had not been made in vai n. He said: Families and patients across Stafford and surrou nding areaswill be pleased that the Government has accepted the pri nciple of allrecommendations of the Francis Report and will directly put intopractice 204 out of the 290 recommendations. This has been a longand difficult journey for those who suffered, both patients and their loved ones, and the acceptance of the reports recommendationsensures that journey has not been in vain. Today marks a turning point for the NHS and patients with improvedtransparency and a focus on patient safety and care at the heart of thesystem. There is a new culture of transparency and openness whichcan give people in St affor d, and across the UK, the confidence in theNHS they deserve. Cannock Chase MP Aidan Burley said the changes would lead to anew culture that would mean the Stafford Hospital scandal could notbe repeated. The announcement hopefully marks the beginning of a completechange of culture within the NHS, away from suppressing the truth andpreventing lessons being learnt. Rather than high patient mortalityrates being explained away or brushed under the carpet, as they werein Stafford hospital, they sho uld now act as an alarm and beinvestigated properly. Bill Cash, MP for Stone, said there was still work to do andemphasised how pushing for an inquiry into Mid Staffs had shapednational change in the NHS. He said: Along with Cure The NHS, I c alled for this inquiry repeatedlyand that was the real change. It has led to shake-up not only in MidStaffordshire but across the entire NHS.

Aidan in the papers: Stafford, Stone and Chase MPs on theGovernment's response to the FrancisReport Robin Scott, Staffordshire Newsletter Wednesday 20 th November 2013 Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroywelcomed the Governmentsresponse to the Francis Reportsaying a culture of compassionate and safe care must be the legacyof the inquiry into the failings at Stafford Hospital. It is the least that those who suffered from dreadful neglect and their loved ones who campaigned for justice deserve.

Families and patients across Stafford and surrounding areas will bepleased that the Government has accepted the principle of allrecommendations of the Francis Report and will directly put intopractice 204 out of the 290 recommendations. "This has been a long and difficult journey for those who suffered both patients and their loved ones - and the acceptance of the reportsrecommendations ensures that journey has not been in vain. Stone MP Bill Cash applauded the work of Cure the NHS campaignerswithout whom he said the Francis Report would never have happened.

But for our determined campaign with Cure the NHS, and in particular Julie Bailey, Debra Hazeldine and Ken Lownds, and his campaign for zero harm, the 2005 Act inquiry would never have taken place and theFrancis report would never have been produced, with all its beneficialconsequences, in the Secretary of States hands, for the NHS in thenational interest. Chase MP Aidan Burley called on the Government to instil a culture of candour and openness in the NHS where concerns were acted on andmortality data was no longer brushed under the carpet to protect theNHSs reputation.

We now know that poor care was allowed to continue at Mid Staffsbecause staff were simply too afraid to speak out and, if they did, theywere ignored or, worse, their careers were threatened, he said. The high death rates at Stafford hospital were not taken seriouslyenough at the time and were merely explained away rather than usedas an alarm signal that should have triggered further investigations. "There was clearly a culture of fear among NHS staff, many of whomwitnessed the appalling care of my constituents.

Guido Fawkes BlogMonday 18 th November 2013 Bernard Jenkin, chairman of the Public

Administration committee, said of the re-rentingscandal : There must be no impression that

parliamentary expenses are being used as back door funding for political parties. Kicked into action, last week IPSA published a listof MPs that rent off their parties or unions . When IPSA was set up former Cannock ChaseLabour MP Tony Wright was appointed as the only politician to itsboard, on account of his seemingly clean expenses. So awkward thenthat Wright spent the better part of two decades renting an office inJennie Lee House in his constituency. The clue is in the name Leewas the widow of Nye Bevan and the building is owned by Labour.
