Key Concepts  p. 3

??

To determine the factors of 4x + 10 symbolically,

divide by the Greatest Common Factor of the two

terms.

To determine the factors of 2x  10, pictorally, draw

the algebra tiles in the shape of a rectangle and record the dimensions.

2x  10 = 2(x  5)

Example 1

ç ?

Show the factors using pictures and symbols.

Pictorally: Symbolically:1. determine the greatest common factor

of the two terms and divide each term by

that factor.

2.  write the two factors side by side

Polynomial Factoring - GCF First

When asked to factor a polynomial the first strategy to try is to factor out a Greatest Common Factor

1. Factor the following polynomials.  Sketch a rectangle to show the polynomial area and dimensions.Use grid multiplication to check the answer.
