Diesel Engines by Liebherr2

Powerful diesel engines by LiebherrLike Liebherr gas engines, diesel engines from Liebherr are designed and manufactured in Bulle, Switzerland. The first 6-cylinder inline engines came off the production line in 1985. Since then, both the product portfolio and the manufacturing systems have been continuously expanded.

Diesel engines from Liebherr are specially developed for use in offroad applications. They are remarkably well suited to the toughest of environmental conditions and therefore ideal for cranes, construction machines and mining equip-ment. The engines have proven themselves a thousand times over in Liebherr equipment but are also popular among a rising number of customers outside the Liebherr group of companies. These customers value the engines above all for their performance, reliability and very smooth running behaviour.

High performance

Engine characteristics

Diesel engines from Liebherr are distinguished by development of the maximum torque over a very broad speed range. For an additional in-crease in performance and efficiency, the torque curves are also adapted to the application.

Diesel engines from Liebherr are distinguished by their high specific performance. This can be called upon at any time thanks to the responsive engines. Engine archi-tecture, injection system and engine management are adapted ideally to each other in order to achieve an optimal, application-specific torque curve. This is decisive not just for the performance but also for the degree of efficiency and thereby fuel consumption.

Flexible torque curve

The torque curves have been specifically adapted to every application. In this way, the maximum torque is available just when it is needed, even at low en-gine speeds.

Powerful auxiliary outputs (PTOs)

The engines from Liebherr feature up to four gener-ously proportioned power take-off units with which, for example, fan pumps, power steering pumps and other auxiliary consumers can be driven in the ma-chine.

Matched turbochargers

To achieve a high level of torque and optimal com-bustion, Liebherr matched the turbochargers spe-cifically to each engine and employs a one or two stage charging system depending on the require-ment and application. In this way, the air-fuel mixture and working pressure in the piston can be adapted ideally to the application. Thanks to efficient charg-ing, diesel engines from Liebherr can also be used at high altitudes.

Excellent cold starting properties

Diesel engines from Liebherr are designed for hy-drostatic drivetrains. As such, their cold starting properties are excellent even with a high level of drag torque.

Liebherr injection system

The performance of a combustion engine is determined to a large degree by the injection system. The common rail system from Liebherr generates high injection pressures (up to 2,000 bar) for maximum ef-ficiency.

Very smooth running

Balance shaft

Dynamic forces in a 4-cylinder engine are compensated for by a balance shaft. Therefore, the 4-cylinder engines from Liebherr have much lower vibrations and much smoother operation than comparable 4-cylinder engines.

Multiple injection

The combustion pressure curve can be optimised through multiple injection. Together with an ideal injection point and an extremely uniform injection quantity for every cylinder, the combustion proce-dure can be configured so that noise is very low.

Diesel engines from Liebherr run absolutely smoothly, evenly and with low vibra-tion – even under arduous operating conditions. By low noise combustion with an optimised combustion pressure characteristic, vibrations are minimised right from the outset. A rigid design and generously proportioned components also contribute towards reduced vibrations.

Low noise combustion

For low noise combustion, the injection timing and combustion pressure curve must be absolutely ac-curate. In addition, a precise and even injection across all cylinders is crucial. The Liebherr-devel-oped common rail system, including own engine control unit, therefore features a separate pressure accumulator for each cylinder and the means of multiple injection.

Rigid engine design All of the mechanical parts in Liebherr diesel engines have been optimised to reduce the noise and oscil-lation level to a minimum. With the extremely stiff design of engine block, crankcase, oil sump, valve cover and subframe, diesel engines from Liebherr set a benchmark in terms of noise emissions. Where possible, gear trains are used for auxiliary drive sys-tems. Optimised gear pairing facilitates low noise transmission of very high torques.

Balance shaft on 4-cylinder engines

Generally, the more cylinders an engine has the smoother is runs. On its 4-cylinder engines, there-fore, Liebherr has implemented specific measures to reduce the level of vibrations. Thanks to a balance shaft, the engines run much more smoothly than comparable 4-cylinder engines. The level of smooth running is almost the same as that on a 6-cylinder engine.

Quality and reliability

One-piece steel piston

For a long service life with high combustion pressures, Liebherr employs one-piece steel pis-tons. Developed using modern construction and simulation programs, the piston features maximum strength even under high thermal load and can be cooled efficiently.

Generous bearing dimensions

Aside from high safety factors, Liebherr employs the highest quality materials, such as com-posite bearing shells, to ensure the longevity of crankshaft bearings under increasing loads.

Diesel engines from Liebherr have proven their worth for decades in the toughest of situations and under extreme working conditions on construction sites and in min-ing operations around the world. Contributing towards their high level of reliability is not just their solid and secure design but also consistent quality assurance and process monitoring in all areas of business.

Reliable design In order to endure the toughest work loads reliably, Liebherr diesel engines are distinguished by rock-solid, robust mechanical engineering. One-piece steel pistons allow high ignition pressures with a long service life. Components, optimised with the finite element method, demonstrate ideal load dis-tribution and optimal material utilisation.

Operating safety For high operational safety, high tensile pipes are used instead of standard fuel lines. A special oil sump and oil circuit configuration makes it possible for the machine to be employed on gradients of up to 45° with the same level of operating safety. Every electronics component also complies with high de-mands on safety. In engines for mining equipment, connectors in engaged and disengaged state have a protection class as high as IP6k9k.

Quality assurance throughout

To safeguard quality, Liebherr uses a contempo-rary computer-assisted quality management system (CAQ system) that is implemented as early as the production creation process and covers the entire product life cycle. Statistical assessments, FMEA (failure mode and effects analyses) and CIP (con-tinuous improvement processes) are examples of a consistent process philosophy.

Highest standards of quality

Quality assurance at the Bulle site is certified in ac-cordance with DIN EN ISO 9001/2008 and is based on VDA standards (reliability control system). The systematic life cycle analyses are carried out ac-cording to Weibull.

Maintenance and service

Maintenance and spare parts sets

Practically-orientated mainte-nance and repair sets, such as packs of seals, make it easy to order parts that need to be replaced together and ensure a high level of repair quality.

Low maintenance belt drives

The engine's powerful belt drives for ancillaries such as alternator and air conditioning compressor are practically maintenance-free thanks to an automatic tensioning device.

Diesel engines from Liebherr are designed to support the highest level of service friendliness. Thanks to a close relationship with customers and application ex-pertise within the company group, the right priorities are set. In this way, service measures can be performed very easily thanks to the clarity of installed parts and well structured documentation. Ongoing training makes efficient customer service operations possible with the minimum of time expenditure. The secure and rapid availability of original spare parts and practically-orientated assembly of mainte-nance and repair sets also contribute towards maximum operational readiness of the equipment.

Comprehensive training programme

For efficient customer service operations, the ser-vice personnel must be well prepared and have up-to-date knowledge. Liebherr therefore offers practically-orientated basic and intermediate train-ing courses. In a well equipped training centre, ex-perienced trainers can also simulate extreme repair scenarios.

Optimal accessibility To make maintenance and service as easy as pos-sible, careful attention was paid during the design phase to the clear arrangement and accessibility of all service-relevant parts. As such, the oil filter is easy to reach and the cylinder heads can be re-placed individually.

Spare parts availability Parts required for maintenance and repair are stored in central Liebherr warehouses or are avail-able directly from Liebherr service centres around the world. In this way, quick availability is assured. The quality of repair work is increased by the use of original spares and maintenance parts.

Common rail injection system

The injection system is engineered optimally in the diesel engine design. Instead of a continual rail, each cylinder has its own pressure accumulator, which is recessed in the cylinder heads as a space saving measure on inline engines.

System expertise

Exhaust gas aftertreatment

Despite internal measures within the engine, the increasingly stricter emissions requirements cannot be achieved without aftertreatment systems. To comply with emissions stage IV and tier 4 final, Liebherr relies entirely on SCR technology.

Liebherr engine control unit

The Liebherr engine control unit was developed according to the require-ments of Off Highway applications as well as international standards like ISO15998/ISO13849 and ISO61508 SIL2. In this way, high equipment per-formance is assured even under the toughest of environmental conditions.

High performance and durable diesel engines with a high degree of efficien-cy and low particulate emissions are only possible through harmonious and masterful engineering of the four sub-systems: engine architecture, injection system, engine management and emissions aftertreatment. Liebherr therefore develops and constructs all of these components itself and manufactures im-portant parts inhouse.

Common rail injection system

The common rail system developed by Liebherr per-mits injection pressures of up to 2,000 bar and pre-cise multiple injections for low noise combustion. It was adapted especially to the requirements of Lieb-herr engines and, thanks to a high degree of effi-ciency and effective combustion, ensures low fuel consumption and low emissions.

Electronic engine control unit

Management of the engine and all of the participat-ing systems is becoming increasingly complicated. The new Liebherr engine control unit combines all of the functions for management of the engine, ex-haust gas aftertreatment, injection and engine-re-lated equipment functions in one box. The engine management also features an integrated, intuitive diagnostic software.

Exhaust gas aftertreatment

Depending on the application and national emis-sions regulations, the internal technologies of the engine are enhanced with downstream measures to reduce particulates and emissions. The particulate filters and SCR systems offered by Liebherr are de-signed to be space-saving and simple in order to keep the amount of effort required for integration as low as possible.

Emissions reduction aftertreatment with SCR

Exhaust gas aftertreatment makes it possible to markedly minimise nitrogen oxide with the aid of the innovative SCR catalytic converter system.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)

Exhaust gas aftertreatment with the SCR system requires a dilut-ed urea solution as an additional reducing agent. This substance is distributed in Europe under the brand name Adblue® and is added to the engine's exhaust gas. The diesel exhaust fluid is non-toxic, odourless and avail-able around the world.

Diesel engines from Liebherr protect the environment and resources by low fuel consumption and reduced emissions. Liebherr offers exhaust gas aftertreatment systems that are adapted to the application and to legislative requirements applica-ble in each region respectively. For stage IV and tier 4 final, Liebherr relies entirely on an innovative SCR system. The inhouse-developed system reduces exhaust emissions effectively without a sacrifice in performance.

Measurably less fuel With an ideal configuration, the fuel consumption of engines with SCR system can be reduced by up to 8 %. Fine adjustment of the combustion process is crucial to achieve this.

Considerably lower nitrogen oxide

The innovative SCR system from Liebherr, consist-ing of SCR catalytic converter system and other components, such as injector and diesel exhaust fluid supply, facilitates a 98 percent reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOX). By adhering to the emissions specifications, the environment is protected.

System optimisation To supplement development of the SCR system, Liebherr has also further optimised the entire fuel combustion process. An optimised combustion chamber geometry, efficient turbocharging and op-timisation of the friction coefficient are examples of the measures that were necessary. Crucial for the reduction of exhaust emissions and fuel consump-tion, however, was development of a dedicated in-jection system including an own engine control unit.

Wide product rangeCurrently, the product portfolio comprises eleven basic engines ranging in perfor-mance from 130 kW to 750 kW. From the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder inline engines to the 8-cylinder and 12-cylinder V-engines, a broad performance and torque spec-trum is covered.

Extension to drivetrain Liebherr also offers splitter boxes and axial piston pumps that can supplement the diesel engines to create a customer-specific drivetrain. All of the com-ponents are developed and manufactured at the Bulle site. They are therefore adapted optimally to each other and form a compact, powerful system with a high degree of overall efficiency.

Engines for every emissions standard

Liebherr offers an engine configuration to suit every market area and every emissions standard. For the EU stage IIIA and EPA tier 3 standards, no additional exhaust gas aftertreatment system is re-quired. The engines are therefore particularly robust and suitable for a wide range of different fuel quali-ties.The engine generation for EU stage IIIB / EPA tier 4 interim requires external exhaust gas aftertreatment and is offered by Liebherr with particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation or an SCR catalytic con-verter as an alternative. For the EU stage IV and EPA tier 4 final emissions standard, the Liebherr engines were fundamentally revised again. Further to this, Liebherr relies entirely on the innovative SCR technology for exhaust gas aftertreatment, which is adapted to the national leg-islative requirements respectively.

Same interfaces In markets and for equipment for which an exhaust gas aftertreatment system is not essential, Liebherr also offers the new engine generation as stage IIIA compliant. This means that for both exhaust gas standards the engines have the same interfaces, thereby making replacement in the machinery setup easier.

EU stage IIIB / EPA tier 4 interim with SCR

Diesel engines of EU stage IIIB / EPA tier 4 interim with SCR catalytic converter are used in mobile cranes and crawler cranes.

EU stage IV / EPA tier 4 final

To adhere to the EU stage IV and EPA tier 4 final exhaust gas standards, Liebherr relies entirely on an innovative SCR system for all applications.

Diesel Engines by Liebherr 25

Examples of use

Earth moving and deep foundation machines

Diesel engines from Liebherr have been proven a thousand times over in mobile and crawler excavators, wheel loaders, loading and crawler tractors, duty-cy-cle crawler cranes and drilling rigs. They are also used in articulated trucks.

Mining equipment In smaller mining equipment, such as crawler ex-cavators and mining tractors, the full range of per-formance of the V12 diesel engine from Liebherr is drawn upon. It operates in this scenario at up to 8000 hours per year under the toughest of environ-mental conditions.

Material handling and recycling equipment

For excavators specifically designed for mate-rial handling and for recycling equipment such as shredders, very reliable engines with a high level of availability are generally required.

Page 26: New Liebherr.pdf

Diesel Engines by Liebherr26

Page 27: New Liebherr.pdf

Diesel Engines by Liebherr 27

Examples of use

Cranes In mobile cranes and crawler cranes, two diesel en-gines are often used; one in the undercarriage and one in the uppercarriage. For the engines in the undercarriage, high drive-off tor-ques are required. The engines in the uppercarriage must be extremely reliable and operate safely as they are also responsible for keeping the load suspended.

Maritime applications

For deployment in ship propulsion systems, diesel engines from Liebherr are currently not suited. How-ever, they are used in mobile harbour cranes and reach stackers and can also be used to drive gener-ators or as an auxiliary engine on ships and offshore platforms

Special vehicles and machinery

Liebherr diesel engines are suitable for all offroad applications that require powerful and reliable en-gines. As an example, they power a wide range of pipeline equipment, fire engines and aircraft trac-tors.
