This is the 33rd BRW Rich 200, published in The Australian Financial Review Magazine and online at afr.com. The Rich 200 is the list of Australia’s 200 wealthiest individual citizens as ranked by net wealth. Valuations are undertaken by the Rich List editor and a team of
researchers, and are minimum estimates. They are calculated using publicly available information and confidential consultation with list members. Private company valuations are
typically determined using profit margins and price-earnings ratios of comparable publicly listed competitors. Debt levels are also taken into account, with any assumptions based on the age
and history of the list member and the relevant industry from which their wealth is derived.

INNOVATION | SURVER 2.0 ENHANCED
Surver 2.0: A ground-breaking data journalism platform
The Australian Financial Review aims to provide readers the news, data and tools they need to be successful in business, investment and life. Surveys server, or Surver, was developed in-house by journalists for journalists to make it easy for them to collect, analyse and publish datasets.
It’s a scene played out in newsrooms across the world – a journalist has spent time carefully gathering a set of data for a story. It’s used once then then the data is stored in an ad hoc fashion making it hard to reuse and harder to share around the newsroom or with readers. If the journalist leaves, the data is often lost.
Surver 2.0 is the Financial Review’s solution to this problem. Surver 2.0 is a data journalism news platform that allows journalists to easily and quickly create, manage and publish datasets and surveys about any topic. The grunt work of data validation, storage and publication is managed by the system. The data is used to power the reporter’s stories and then published for readers to explore via a range of interactive apps and graphics.
The datatable application that sits on top of the database allows readers to explore any given set of data by filtering, sorting and then clicking into the detail of an entity (be it a person or company).

Making data reusableCUSTOM LOOK AND LOGIC
The system allows a reporter to easily specify a custom look and calculation for each survey.
For example, the BRW Rich 200 is formatted to highlight the rank and wealth figure. In contrast, the Law Partnership Survey emphasises the key data for that industry around staffing numbers.
CUSTOM FORMATTING FOR EACH DATABASE
Surver 2.0 also allows custom logic to be built into a survey. This can range from allowing data to be stored in a raw format for calculations but presented in a neat reader-friendly manner. For example, an individual’s wealth is stored as 14,200,000,000 and then presented to readers as $14.2b.
CUSTOM ENTITY PAGES
Another example is custom logic that works out if a Rich Lister has been on the list before or is making a debut and mark it as such on the entity pop-up page.
The platform was created in-house by senior journalist John Davidson (a former professional programmer) with data journalist Edmund Tadros and designed by senior interactive designer Les Hewitt.

DATA COLLECTION
TECHNOLOGY
Surver 2.0 was created using a modern programming stack: a ReSTful public API that can be accessed by any number of apps; an Angular app for drag-and-drop creation of surveys and associated data; and a variety of JavaScript apps that present the data interactively to readers. The interactive apps access the database directly meaning that publication of new data is instantaneous and effortless.

Twenty surveys and growing
Surver 2.0 now houses twenty surveys and tens of thousands of individual pieces of data and more than 100 external users who have access to their own account and data.
