Carnival CrustaJoseph Santina originally invented the Brandy Crusta in New Orleans in 1852 while working at the Jewel of the South. This citrusy drink was the forerunner of the Sidecar and Margarita.
Ingredients:• 60ml Die Mas potstill brandy• One teaspoon orange liqueur• One teaspoon fresh lemon juice• One teaspoon sugar syrup• Dash of bitters• Crushed ice• Lemon peel for garnish
Shake together the Die Mas potstill brandy, liqueur, lemon juice, syrup, and bitters in a cocktail shaker fi lled with ice until chilled – about 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cordial glass. Submerge lemon peel in cocktail and serve.

Three easy New Orleans cocktails to celebrate Mardi Gras
Hurricane ParadeThe Hurricane was originally invented in New Orleans by bartender Louis Culligan. The legendary Pat O’Brien’s bar happened to be overstocked with rum. O’Brien quickly solved the problem with The Hurricane.
Ingredients• Two shots of Chamarel
premium white rum• 30ml fresh lemon juice• 30ml of passion fruit syrup• Crushed ice• Orange slice for garnish• Cherry for garnish Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and add plenty of crushed ice. Shake well and pour, unstrained, into a large glass. Garnish with orange slice and a cherry.
New Orleans FizzNew Orleans barman Henry Ramos invented the Ramos Gin Fizz, originally called the New Orleans Fizz, in 1888. The drink rarely is on cocktail menus outside New Orleans.
Ingredients:• 60ml Inverroche Classic Gin• 15ml fresh lemon juice• 15ml fresh lime juice• One egg white• 30ml heavy cream• Two teaspoons superfi ne sugar• Half a teaspoon of orange
blossom water (can be substituted with orange zest, orange liqueur or vanilla extract)
• Ice• Soda water Place the gin, lemon juice, lime juice, egg white, cream, sugar, and orange blossom water into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for two minutes. Add a handful of ice to the cocktail shaker and shake again until the outside of the canister looks frosty. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass without ice. Top o� with soda water.
Down in New OrleansA t the start of the year I mentioned that one of my goals was to improve my
garden space. Well, I had no idea what I was getting myself into! The El Niño-style weather patterns have not made it easy. If it’s not the raging heat
threatening to make my new plants wither, then it’s the wild wind trying to lift them o� the ground. Gardening has tested my patience and endurance to keep things alive. Whether it means getting up earlier to water the garden, pruning by moonlight, or constantly thinking about new ways to create shade, I will persevere.

The restaurantIt all started with a vision and a few lines in the sand at the back of the Karoo property. Not only was Adriaan involved in the building of the restaurant, his vision along with Karoo Yard owner John du Raan extended to using what they had available on the premises. Fermier’s walls have risen from rammed earth taken from the Karoo property - a conscious way of building where you make use of what earth has been dug up. Fermier’s crockery is handmade by Elza van Dijk, who runs her pottery studio from Karoo Square. Even the tables and chairs were crafted a few metres away from where the building has risen, making not only for a beautiful space but also one with character.

Metallics are interesting colours to track when it comes to home trends. Unlike paint
colours and other surface trends, metallics usually straddle the line between aesthetic and construction. They don’t just speak to how something looks, but how it’s made too.
That’s why when it comes to the current trends towards golds, bronzes and coppers, we can see how they say something deeper about our collective mind-set and not just passing fashion. In a world where so much of what we interact with is clean and minimal, from our technology to our cars and our clothing, metallics are emphatically of the earth. A: Because I’m renting a spot inside the hair salon, the renting price is a lot better compared to someone who would have to pay the rent all by themselves.
Q: What is your shop footprint?A: About eight to 10 people will
come for treatments per day.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: Yes, I would like to grow
and expand my business by employing more people.
Q: Do you operate online as well?A: No, not yet, but I will
be starting soon.

Construction of the R3,5bn Clairwood Logistics Park will commence soon, creating
employment and business opportunities within the South Durban Basin.
KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental A� airs Michael Mabuyakhulu gave the project the go-ahead after his department found that the amended Environmental Impact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in September 2014, complied with stringent regulations and adequately addressed concerns raised during an appeal.

Rate hike means a bumpy ride for property
The recent repo rate hike of 50 basis points comes as no surprise, says Samuel See� ,
chairman, See� group. “Consumers should be aware that this is the fi rst of more hikes to follow.” According to him, a� ordability will be the key theme for the property market. “Buyers will be looking closely at prices and driving a hard bargain,” See� adds.
Looking at the rate hike pragmatically, Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding Property Group, says that although house price growth has slowed, nominal prices are currently at record highs of about R1,386m, while the real price, which takes infl ation into account, is just 10% o� its record highs before the 2007 crisis. “We have a rapidly growing, young
population for whom there is insu� cient housing, so there is little reason to expect house prices to fall outright.”
Herschel Jawitz, CEO, Jawitz Properties, says, “The 50 basis points mean an increase in repayments of R165 per month per R500,000 of bond. This may not seem signifi cant at fi rst glance, but when added to the previous rate hike it begins to add up.”
Adrian Goslett, CEO, RE/MAX Southern Africa, says consumers who are over-indebted, should seek fi nancial advice and consolidate and pay o� short-term debt. Selling a home should be the last option, as property is the one long-term asset that should yield a return over time.

Life insurance is a di� cult subject. Not only does it require you to consider
your own mortality, but it also means having to put some sort of a value on what you are worth.
It can be di� cult to think about your family carrying on without you, but that is exactly what has to be done when thinking about whether you need life insurance and how much you might need.
If you have anyone who depends on you fi nancially, whether that is children, a spouse, parents or siblings, then life insurance is critical.
Life insurance guarantees that your death won’t leave your dependants in fi nancial trouble. It’s not about paying for your funeral or having some money to buy something nice to cheer them up, but about ensuring that they can meet all their fi nancial obligations without your income.
Particularly if you are paying o� signifi cant debts, such as a home loan or a car, it is worth making sure that those are covered by an insurance policy that can remove that burden. You might also need life insurance to cover the expenses of your estate.
When working out how much life insurance you need, consider:
1 How much would I need to pay o� all my debt?
2 What are my monthly expenses, and how much would I need to create that income for my family at a drawdown rate of 5% a year?
3 Will I need to provide funding for my children’s future education?
4 Do I need to provide for the expenses in my estate?
However, life insurance is not something that you necessarily need to hang on to
forever. Just as you don’t need to insure a car that you no longer own, you can outlive your need for life insurance. This would be the case if you satisfy three criteria:
1 You and your spouse are independently wealthy enough and each has enough income to meet your debt obligations and sustain your standard of living. If either of you passed away, the other would therefore still be in a stable fi nancial position.
2 You have no other dependants. If your children are self-su� cient adults, and you are not responsible for any other family members, then your death would not leave anyone fi nancially vulnerable.
3 Your estate is either too small to attract estate duties, or has enough liquid assets to meet the taxes and executor’s fees. In South Africa the fi rst R3,5m of your estate is currently exempt from tax.
