Rain! What Rain?

Milton’s Jubilee Celebrations by Chris Trotman, Chairman

One of the first things the Jubilee Committee did was to hire the biggest marquee we could afford - that was way back last year.

It took a year in the planning and now it’s all over. The Green looks like nothing had happened and your Jubilee Committee is returning to normality. During the year we have had tremendous support from the Village, not only in the sponsorship that was donated, but in the events that raised money for the occasion.

In total we have raised over £8000 and this, along with the support of the Parish Council in providing the

marquee, made it possible for us to provide the weekend festivities.

We were never quite sure how many would turn up to the celebrations but our worries were unfounded.

Several hundred came through the door to the Craft Fair during the day, and we ran out of chairs for the evening’s choral concert! The estimate for Sunday was well over 400, with over 300 pork baps being sold at the barn dance.

The weekend was a resounding success and I would like to pay thanks to my team, Christine Hart, Dom Hiscock, John Naish and Linda Dixon who between us made it all happen. I would also like to thank the Villagers of Milton and the many others who supported the weekend. You made it the success it was.

We actually raised more money than we needed for the weekend so we are going to give it back to the village as a Jubilee Legacy. The plan is to plant an oak tree, to be called ‘The Jubilee Oak’, on the Village Green for the enjoyment, and shelter, of generations to come.

Thank you once again.

Vi Miles Memorial Stall

by Ros Haine & Christine Hart

As usual, Ros and Christine will run the Vi Miles Memorial Stall at the fete on Saturday 7th July. We have already received some donations for the stall, but, of course, we need more!

Please donate any good quality bric-a-brac, children’s toys, jigsaw puzzles, unwanted gifts etc, to raise money for the fete funds (books, CDs, DVDs etc go to the Library stall). Please do not include any electrical goods or knives, as we are not allowed to sell these.

All donations can be delivered to: Christine Hart at ‘The Beeches’, The Sands (at the bottom of The Sands) or, if you are unable to deliver, goods can be collected – please phone Christine on 831739 to arrange this.

Please can we have all donations before Fete day, as we need to sort everything. Goods delivered on the day of the Fete may not get on the stall.

Please search your loft and garage, find all those things you have hidden away and forgotten about and donate them, to help us reach another record total.

Many thanks.

Milton Fete fancy dress parade starts from Groves Yard and the Village Hall at 1.15pm. The parade tours the village, arriving on the Green for the official opening at 2.00pm.

The fancy dress judging follows the parade. The theme this year is ‘Olympics, past, present and future’.

In line with the Olympic theme is a chariot competition with prizes for the Best and Fastest. To make the chariot event a

success, we need the support of all you ‘grown-ups’. Pick up your hammer and nails and build your two wheeled chariot.

Other events throughout the afternoon include the ‘Olympian throwing challenge’. Join in the team and obstacle races in the main arena.

Fete day is a fun day out for the whole family. Children can enjoy visiting the Activities Tent and much more besides. Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets for

the chance to win an amazing array of prizes.

As with previous years, the proceeds are divided between the Church Fabric Fund and Village Hall. Ten per cent of the profit is also awarded to a Milton youth organisation.

Acknowledgement goes to the Milton Sports Association for again providing essential services.

Have a great day! The Village Fete Committee

Self Service at the library Wychwood Library has moved into the 21st century with the introduction of a Self Service facility and it is proving very popular.

Transactions are dealt with speedily and there is more privacy. There are also options on the machine to change the screen saver to a more child friendly one, a lion or fish swimming.

You can make the print size larger or in another language. We will be available to help so just remember to bring your library card with you when you next visit and give it a go.

Summer Reading Challenge Look out for the very exciting Summer Reading Challenge, for our younger readers, with the theme

being “The Story Lab”. This involves a reading challenge across the globe to recover lost items to help Prof. Cortex boost the imagin-ation of the Story Lab.

So go for Gold this summer and end up at the Olympic Park for your prizes and gold medal.

We had such a successful Reading Challenge last year we hope that you all will join in again this time. Look out also for activities in the library during the summer holidays to keep up with your reading and using Wychwood Library.

Library Stall Also please don’t forget to donate books to the Library Stall at this year’s summer Fete. Please pop into the Library for details.

FOUR NEW COUNCILLORS -AND ALL WOMEN!

The mother of two primary school age children, I moved to the Parish just three years ago. I was born and raised in Kent but lived in Brighton, London and Hertfordshire before settling in Milton.

I work for the Oxfordshire Council Library Service and after spending last year managing Eynsham Library, I have now returned to my position at Chipping Norton Library.

I have been involved with the village’s Rainbows group, ran a school gardening club, become a lifeguard for the school swimming pool and I am the Village Hall Committee Secretary. I am now responsible for the Parish Newsletter and website.
