OCTOBER 2016
Teacher Bjorn Johnson hands out free hotdogs to MUR
students who could explain how they “demonstrated one of
our 5 beliefs (Respect, Responsibility, Excellence, Kindness,
Integrity) at Murdoch since the beginning of the school year.”
A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome new and
returning students, families, and staff for the start of the 2016-
2017 school year. We have enjoyed a smooth start up and look
forward to working together to make Murdoch MacKay Collegiate
an exceptional place to be focused on individual success! As we
work to support your children, we encourage you to take an
active role in their learning and overall school experience to
ensure that Murdoch’s core values of Respect, Responsibility,
Integrity, Kindness, and Excellence are demonstrated and upheld
on a daily basis.

Student Parking and Fair
Notice:
A reminder to students that parking is available on school property only when a parking pass is purchased through the main office and displayed in the vehicle, and in the designated number stall provided at time of purchase. Passes cost $95.00 per Semester as indicated by the River East Transcona School Division. We have a process in place to ensure that only parking pass holders park on school property. Should a vehicle not have a parking pass displayed, a written warning will be issued and vehicle information recorded. Repeated infractions will result in school issued consequence, and/or ticketing and towing. Thank you to all for being respectful of our established rules and procedures.

Y outh in Philanthropy/Charitable Ideas is a great way for students to get involved with giving back to the community. Students are given $5000 from the Winnipeg Foundation to grant to organizations around Winnipeg for specific projects. In addition, Charitable Ideas raises money for local initiatives that students choose to
support throughout the year. Join us on Wednesdays at lunch in room 204 if you are interested in getting involved or look for our events around the school.
Murdoch MacKay has declared every Thursday
(starting October 6th) to be PLAID Day! Will you
show your school spirit and wear plaid?
Let’s make this “a thing”!

PEACE DAYS AT MURDOCH
Murdoch MacKay continued again this year to celebrate Peace Days with guest speakers,
student activities and a special visit from a travelling exhibit titled "Together: an exhibition
on global development". On September 19th, students were lucky enough to be able to visit
the exhibit for a guided tour of the trailer when it was set up in the school's
student parking lot. The trailer had spent the previous week at the Canadian Museum of
Human Rights, before it continued its cross Canada journey. Students and staff that
participated enjoyed the exhibit immensely.

Social Studies Book of the Month
A portrait of life at a crossroads, The Orenda opens with a brutal massacre and the kidnapping of the young Iroquois Snow Falls, a spirited girl with a special gift. Her captor, Bird, is an elder and one of the Huron Nation’s great warriors and statesmen. It has been years since the murder of his family, and yet they are never far from his mind. In Snow Falls, Bird recognizes the ghost of his lost daughter and sees that the girl possesses powerful magic that will be useful to him on the troubled road ahead. Bird’s people have battled the Iroquois for as long as he can remember, but both tribes now face a new, more dangerous threat from afar.
Christophe, a charismatic Jesuit missionary, has found his calling among the Huron, and devotes himself to learning and understanding their customs and language in order to lead them to Christ. An emissary from distant lands, he brings much more than his faith to the new world.
As these three souls dance with each other through intricately woven acts of duplicity, small battles erupt into bigger wars and a nation emerges from worlds in flux.
About the Author
Joseph Boyden 's first novel, Three Day Road , was selected for the Today Show Book Club, won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the CBA Libris Fiction Book of the Year Award, the Amazon.ca/ Books in Canada First Novel Award, and the McNally Robinson Aboriginal Book of the Year Award, and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. His second novel, Through Black Spruce, was awarded the Scotiabank Giller Prize and named the Canadian Booksellers Association Fiction Book of the Year; it also earned him the CBA’s Author of the Year Award. His most recent novel, The Orenda, won Canada Reads and was nominated for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. Boyden divides his time between Northern Ontario and Louisiana.
Reading in the classroom
Social Studies classes at all levels support daily reading in the classroom. Students devote roughly 10 minutes each period to reading a novel (fiction or non-fiction) of their choice. Each classroom has a wide range of materials that students may choose from. The Orenda is one such choice!

There are some changes this year in the Math department at Murdoch MacKay!
First, we have some new teachers to welcome to our department! With Ms. Blazek and Ms. Fil currently on leave, we’ve welcomed Mrs. Kabez and Ms. Stephenson to start the year with us. Also, Mr. McDonald has joined us to teach Grade 9, 10, and 12 math, as well as some science courses this year.
Another change involves our Grade 9 math course – this year we’ve moved from time and a half to double time for this foundation-building course. This means that all of our Grade 9 students will take math one period per day for the entire school year, which will give students extra time to ensure they are able to fully meet the outcomes of the course, and it will also allow more time to develop the problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are so important for many courses in high school, including their future math courses.
Along with the extra time for Grade 9 math, we are also now part of the divisional TELP initiative (Technology Enabled Learning Plan), which means all of our Grade 9 math classrooms are equipped with five iPads which can be used in small groups or for larger projects in math. While the class iPads are not new to Grade 9 students (as their classes were part of the project in Grades 7 and 8), our teachers are working on interesting new ways to use them in our math classrooms.
As with any new semester in Math, we ask that parents please let us know if you notice that your son/daughter is having difficulty (whether that be through avoiding homework, having difficulty completing their homework, or letting you know that they are struggling). Our teachers will do the same, and contact you if we notice any issues in class.
For parents of Grade 12 students:
The dates for the semester 1 provincial math exams are on Wednesday, January 25th, 2017 (Essentials) and Thursday, January 26th, 2017 (Pre-Calculus).
What’s new in the math department at Murdoch?
SOCIAL STUDIES HAS NUMERACY TOO!!!

On October 5, 2016, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
performed at Murdoch, right in the Clanscave Gym. This 55-piece orchestra is one of the
premier musical ensembles in the city, and tours the province performing some of the world’s best music for Manitobans. We were honoured to host the WSO, and provided a very receptive audience, including students from several nearby schools.
Students left the event with a newfound appreciation for orchestral music, as well as a sense of awe about how synchronised and focused professional musicians can be. They also were entertained and thrilled by the orchestra’s presentation of music from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. One special highlight was seeing a student cellist perform a solo with the orchestra.
The WSO was very happy to be at Murdoch – it has been several years since they have made it to this part of the city, and they were eager to perform for us. This is a great service provided to the students of Transcona at no cost, thanks to generous sponsors of the arts.
Thanks to all the staff and student volunteers that helped to make this event such a success, and of course thanks to the WSO for their amazing music.
“I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter
what culture we're from, everyone loves music. “-
