3 “Connecting Donors Who Care With Causes that Matter in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, and Southington”

Entering its 16th year, the Catalyst giving circle focused on services for adolescents and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder that would benefi t residents of our four-town area.

The giving circle is comprised of a group of community-minded citizens interested in improving the quality of life in Greater New Britain. Members contribute $250 (or $50 for fi rst-time members) and gather three times a year to learn about a member-chosen issue facing the community, and to consider funding requests from charitable organizations addressing the need. The year concludes with a grant award of up to $12,500.

CCARC of New Britain was awarded $10,000 to offer a series of nine workshops targeted to local families with adolescents or young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is CCARC’s hope that the workshops provide families from Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington with the kind of information and support needed to connect them with vital services now and in the future, and to begin planning for their child’s adult years.

In 2018, Catalyst achieved its highest level of membership with 68 members and meetings became more accessible as Foundation staff offered recordings of presentations so that members could view them at any time.

Our sincere thanks to the Catalyst members who contribute and participate annually as well as the local sponsors such as the Hospital of Central Connecticut and Stanley Black&Decker for generously hosting Catalyst meetings and providing support.

In 2018, the Foundation introduced a new Capacity Building Initiative to provide local non-profi t organizations with resources aimed at strengthening organizational functioning. In the fi rst year, close to 40 non-profi ts benefi ted from a series of nine in-depth, hands on workshops focused on issues including fundraising, succession planning, marketing and board engagement. The Initiative also includes a new onsite Non-Profi t Lending Library and Resource Center (NPLRC) that provides print and online resources to local organizations. Due to the success of the new Capacity Building Initiative, it will continue into 2019 and beyond.

Capacity Building

Aligned with our mission of inspiring philanthropy, werecognize the need to educate younger generations aboutthe value of contributing one’s time, talent, and treasureto support charitable organizations in their communityas well as through innovative social networkingopportunities. Programs include social events such as“GivingTuesday” activities each November in several ofthe communities we serve. In addition, Foundation staffis represented on the board and committees of The Buzz,Greater New Britain’s Young Professionals’ network, which seeks to engage and connect career-minded individuals who give back while cultivating a stronger sense of community.

In his time spent at the Foundation, Jim touched the lives of many with his leadership and dedication and has left behind a lasting legacy. The Community Foundation has established the James G. Williamson Education Assistance Fund, which will provide fi nancial assistance to college and technical school students who need help to complete their degrees beyond what scholarships, fi nancial aid, employment and other sources can provide.
