CARPET FOR A ROYAL AFFAIR [email protected] For Jaipur Rugs, a global designer rug manufacturing company, getting orders for rugs and carpets of differ- ent sizes and designs is mundane. But even they had the rug pulled out from under their feet when they received an order for the largest floor carpet that the company has ever created. The traditional floral design Persian hand- knotted (almost two million knots) carpet, weighing 200 kilos, took Jaipur Rugs two- and-a-half years to create. Measuring 20x32 ft in size, the wool and silk woven carpet comprises 25 shades of colours, the dominant ones being medium ivory and light gold. “Since it’s one of a kind, there is no retail price fixed. But my estima- tion is that it would be sold between $300,000 to $1 million (`2-6 crore). It has been ordered by someone associated with the royal family in Saudi Arabia. Around 14 weavers worked on the carpet, with nine weavers working on it at any given point in time. It’s a traditional floral design,” says Yogesh Chaudhary, Director, Jaipur Rugs. When he was first approached with the order, Chaudhary refused to take the assignment. But the customer’s persistence paid off. “We were initially hesitant. First, you have to make that long a wool. Where will it be made? Besides, getting so many weavers to work on one project is not easy. It’s also nearly impos- sible to manage as the size is huge. Where will you wash it and do the finishing? Every stage becomes challenging when you have such a large carpet,” says Chaudhary. This may have been amongst the more unusual demands that Jaipur Rugs has catered to, but the company is no stranger to celebrity clients. Amongst them are tennis star Venus Williams, Walmart CFO Jill Anderson, Nick Jonas (from the Jonas Brothers) who has used a rug in his daughter’s nursery, cricketers Brad Hodge and Shaun Tait .
