Burlington County Sheriff Jean E. Stanfield recently an-nounced the results of a childsupport raid, saying the sweep – which was part of a statewide ef-fort – resulted in the arrest of 64individuals in Burlington Countywho owed $1,620,824 in court-or-dered child support.

“As in the past, we have had ex-cellent assistance from law en-forcement agencies both withinand outside the county,” Stanfieldsaid. “Executing a statewide raid

of this magnitude underscoresthe importance that must be

placed on the needs of children.“Child support isn’t just an

issue for the children who need it,and the parents who owe it, it’severyone’s issue. When child sup-port goes unpaid, the cost of careoften falls on taxpayer-fundedstate and county agencies,” Stan-field said.

In Burlington County, thesweep involved the assistance andsupport of Burlington CountySheriff’s Department, Willing-boro PD, Pemberton PD, Burling-

ton City PD and Burlington Coun-ty Central Communications.

Mt. Laurel Township Council used itsFeb. 8 meeting to honor Adath Emanu-Elsynagogue for outstanding service to thetownship.

Council specifically highlighted a recentinitiative at the synagogue in which teensin seventh grade and older hosted a holi-day party for 17 young adults fromCovenant House, a facility that providesshelter for homeless youth in Atlantic Cityand also performs counseling at a drop-in

center in Camden.During the event, the teens from Adath

and Covenant House youths made sure tomingle with those they did not alreadyknow by sitting at tables based on birthmonth and seeking out kids with the same

first name or similarly colored shirts.According to the proclamation honoringAdath and the nearly 60 teens who hostedthe party, the goal of the Adath teens wasto go beyond simply donating to the lessfortunate during the holidays and insteadreach out in other ways and to give of themselves.

Ultimately, the event celebrated the simi-larities of all the youths involved, andMayor Linda Bobo thanked the synagogueand teens for their service to the township.

“On behalf of the township of Mt. Lau-rel, we really appreciate all of the good

work that you do, and I always say that oneof the things that makes this communitysuch a great place to live and work andraise a family is because of people likeyou,” Bobo said.

    In other news:

    • Four members of council voted to reap-point Mt. Laurel Municipal Utilities Au-thority board member Geraldine Nardelloto the MUA board, with CouncilmemberJim Keenan casting the lone vote againstthe reappointment.

Keenan said he was concerned councildid not have the chance to question Nardel-lo in person on her wish to be reappointedto the board, as Nardello was not present atthe Feb. 8 meeting. Keenan was also upsetNardello’s wish to continue to serve on theboard was relayed to the township throughthe township clerk by email from the MUA

director and not from Nardello herself.Keenan also questioned the finances of

the MUA regarding increases in employeesalaries.

    Champagne wishes and caviar

dreams are no longer in the

head of our Gov. Christie. Last

    week, following a disappointing sixth-

place finish in the New Hampshire pri-

mary, Christie did what many thought

was inevitable for quite awhile now –

he suspended his bid for the presiden-cy.

Four years ago, when Christie made

it official that he would not seek the Re-

publican nomination in the 2012 elec-

    tion opposite President Obama, it

seemed as though our governor would,

at the very least, be a leading candidate

in 2016. But following the Bridgegate

scandal and fights over the state’s pen-

    sion, voters soured on him.

    The surprising rise of Donald

Trump, and others, was the final blow

    to Christie’s presidential aspirations.

He performed poorly in the Iowa

    caucuses, which wasn’t unexpected,

but all along, he was banking his cam-

paign on success in New Hampshire.

When he finished with just 7 percent of

the vote last week, good for sixth best

among Republicans, the final nail was

    hammered in his coffin.

Now, Christie returns to New Jersey

to assume his full-time duties of gover-

nor. That will be good for us – or will

    it?

Christie will serve out the remain-

ing two years of his second term as a

    lameduck governor. Between now and

2017, with no further political ascen-

sion in sight, he will be forced to deal

with a Legislature that has its sightsset on policies that will reach far be-

    yond his term in office.

How much Christie will be able to

accomplish in the remainder of his

term, and just how much influence he

can exert, is questionable, at best.

Christie went for it all, and came up

short. Now, he’s coming back home to

    pick up the pieces.

Here’s to hoping he’ll be more hum-

ble in the coming years and think of

    New Jersey first.

    in our opinion

Welcome home, Chris Christie! With bid for presidency done, our governor can now just be our governor

Rafferty is a graduate of Hah-nemann University and HolyFamily College with a degree inspecial education. He also holds amaster’s degree in school psy-chology, an education specialist'sdegree from Rowan Universityand a certificate of advancedstudy in administration.

His teaching career began in1990 as a special educationteacher in Pennsauken. He then

served as a school counselor inGloucester Township before re-turning to Pennsauken as aschool psychologist, and thenlater moving on as the supervisorof specials in Somers Point.

Rafferty then served as the di-rector of special education inHaddon Heights schools for thethree years prior to his appoint-ment as Tabernacle superintend-ent, a position he held for nearly

five years. At the special Feb. 10 meeting,

Rafferty thanked members of hisfamily who were also in atten-dance, including his grandchil-

dren, who he said want him to bea better person when he wakes upin the mornings – a lesson he saidhe believes can be imparted to allchildren, including those in Mt.Laurel schools.

“By living through exampleand being a good model for them,we can instill the kind of valueswe want to see them acquire forthemselves – to know that if youwork hard, you do your home-work, you listen to your teachers

and you put a lot of effort intothings, you can be successful andyou can accomplish your goals,”Rafferty said.

As someone who was alreadypart of the Lenape Regional send-ing district, Rafferty said he wasfamiliar with the Mt. Laurel dis-trict, and it was the only districthe applied to at the time.

Rafferty said he is pursuing adoctorate in educational leader-

ship from Wilmington University, and hoped his new position in Mt.Laurel would allow him to make amore substantial impact in edu-cation.

“I’m so honored to be able tocome on board, and I’m filledwith optimism and hope and posi-tive attitude in terms of whatwe’re going to be able to do heretogether, and they’ve alreadydone so many great things andthey continue to do good work, and like I said I’m grateful to be-come part of that,” Rafferty said.
