Relay for Life bringstogether communities
By KRISTEN DOWDThe Sun
Fourteen years ago, KathyTyrrell was looking for her silverlining.
Tyrrell’s father had passedaway from cancer, and the Sha-mong resident wanted to turnthis tremendously negative eventinto something positive. Shecame across Medford’s Relay forLife, signed up and has neverlooked back.
“I think cancer is somethingthat makes you feel alone a lot of times. This makes you feel likeyou’re not alone,” Tyrrell said.“And if you’ve lost someone, there’s other people here goingthrough the same thing. It’s reallyhelpful in that way.”
Tyrrell now serves as the vol-unteer event chair for Relay for
Life Medford-Mt. Laurel. Medfordhas hosted the fundraiser for 15years. Mt. Laurel’s event startedfive years ago. This is the firstyear the two towns have merged.
“It’s a really great event wherethe communities come together. There are survivors. There arecaregivers. There are young kidsand older people,” Tyrrell said.“It’s just a really nice communityevent.”
Relay for Life Medford-Mt. Lau-rel begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday,June 4, and runs through 6 a.m.on Sunday, June 5, at the track atLenape High School, 235 HartfordRoad. Teams sign up, fundraiseand, at the event, walk lapsaround the track.
“Relay for Life was started by adoctor who was suffering fromcancer,” Tyrrell said. “The reason
why it runs overnight is becausecancer never sleeps. It’s to bethere for those people who areawake in the middle of the nightbecause they’re scared or don’tknow what’s going to happen.”
Since its inception in 1985,Relay for Life has grown to in-clude 4 million people in morethan 20 countries. It’s the largest

ast week, state education offi-cials held two hearings to dis-cuss the potential of moving
middle and high school start times tolater in the day. Proponents of themeasure say kids need their sleep, anddelaying the opening of schools will
help in that regard. The American Academy of Pedi-
atrics has recommended students startclass no earlier than 8:30 a.m., which iswhy the Legislature passed a measurelast year to study the feasibility of changing the state’s laws. Reports indi-cate that 85 percent of New Jersey’sschools start before 8:30 a.m.
Doctors typically recommend teensget eight to nine hours of sleep pernight. Most teens aren’t getting thatmuch sleep.
The easy and obvious solution
would be for teens to go to bed earlier. But is that realistic?
If classes start at 7:30 a.m., for exam-ple, teens would have to wake up aboutan hour earlier, at 6:30 a.m., to allow forthe typical morning routine and travelto school. To get the recommendednine hours of sleep, this same teenwould have to shut his or her eyes by9:30 p.m.
Yeah, right.Adolescents naturally go to bed later
as they grow older; their hormones
keep them up and active at later hours. In addition, weekday school activities – such as sports, theater and otherclubs – take up more of their time im-mediately after school ends and also atnight, making it even harder for earlybedtimes to occur.
So is it really fair that as the daygrows longer for teens, we ask them towake up and be ready at the same timeas when they were in elementaryschool and could easily be in bed earli-er?
We don’t think it’s fair – or healthy, for that matter.
We believe our state’s education offi-cials should follow the recommenda-tions of the AAP and push school starttimes to 8:30 a.m. for middle schoolsand high schools throughout New Jer-sey.
in our opinion
Push back s chool start timesKids need their rest, and pushin g school start times to 8:30 a.m. woul d help
Your thoughtsWhat are your thoughts on pushing thestart time for middle schools and highschools throughout our state to 8:30a.m.? Let your voice be heard through aletter to the editor.
Animal lovers can soon dance to the
music of Frank Sinatra, enjoy a glass of wine, a signature martini, food and a trib-ute to Ole Blue Eyes.

“People have asked what the ‘Just inTime’ moniker means,” said KathyMcGuire, president, NJ Aid for Animals.“We rescued Sweet Pea just in time - a pitbull left for dead – as she would have been
euthanized had NJ Aid for Animals not
rescued her from the shelter. So we built agala around Sinatra’s famous song ‘Just inTime’ with what we did for Sweet Pea.”
“Just in Time” will only feature a fewhigh end raffle items which include: ahand painted portrait of Sweet Pea; a $300travel voucher from AAA; a DNA test fordogs and a $1,200 gift certificate fromDavis Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.

If youcannot attend you can still donate to theSweet Pea Fund by going towww.njafa.org.”
Top event sponsor, Mt. Laurel AnimalHospital co-owner Chris Torre, DVM, adds
“I knew what ‘Just in Time’ meant when
NJ Aid for Animals brought Sweet Pea, a‘bait dog’ survivor, to our facility last year,”Torre said. “Abused by dog fighting crimi-nals, Sweet Pea recuperated after extensivemedical treatments and inspired this med-ical fund to help other abused animals.”
Tickets to the “Just in Time” Gala are$100 each and can be purchased throughMt. Laurel Veterinary Hospital atwww.mlahvet.com or EventBrite athttp://tinyurl.com/hcnzzaj.

Just minutes from Mt. Laurel
grassroots fundraising event forthe American Cancer Society. And while some of the moneyraised goes toward research, alarge portion stays in the commu-nities where it originated.
“It is earmarked to go back tothe services provided in Burling-ton County,” Tyrrell said.
These American Cancer Socie-ty services include Roads to Re-covery, where volunteers giverides to those going to chemother-
apy or treatment, and Look GoodFeel Better, which helps teachwomen undergoing treatmenthow to cope with skin changesand hair loss by teaching scarf-tying, makeup applications andmore. There is also (800) 227-2345,the 24-hour help line to give an-swers to those facing cancer.
“They can get information onanything – insurance questions, clinical trials, what to expect intheir treatment,” Tyrrell said.
Relay for Life Medford-Mt. Lau-rel kicks off with an opening cer-emony. Cancer survivors walk thefirst lap together, and then care-givers join for the second lap.
Teams set up tents inside of the track to act as home base forthe overnight event. They bringtheir own food, but there are alsoon-site vendors. There are gamesand activities the entire time, too.
“Last year, we were playingkickball at 3 o’clock in the morn-
ing,” Tyrrell said with a laugh.At 9 p.m., a Luminaria Ceremo-
ny is held, with white candle-litbags lining the track.
“The Luminaria Ceremony is just so special,” Tyrrell said. “Thebags are in honor of survivors orin memory of people we have lost, with names on them. At ourevent, we have a bagpiper come inand play, and all the lights areturned off on the track.”
These bags can also be pur-chased before the event for a $10donation, which is part of thefundraising efforts by the partici-pating teams. The American Can-cer Society hopes each individual
taking part raises at least $100.The Relay for Life Medford-Mt.Laurel has raised $36,253.69 as of last week, with 33 teams and 220participants. The goal is 56 teamsand $120,000.
“We set the goal based on whatMt. Laurel individually raisedlast year and what Medfordraised. It might have been a loftygoal considering we merged,”Tyrrell said.
But there is still plenty of timeto sign up and start fundraising.Participants don’t have to live inMedford or Mt. Laurel to takepart. The Shamong Strutters re-cently signed up. Team McDonaldis based in Tabernacle. Schoolsare involved, too. For instance,Seneca High School students havedonated thousands in the past.
Tyrrell also wants people toknow they can come enjoy theevent without signing up, al-though to participate and stay
overnight, registration is re-quired.
“If people want to come andcheck it out and see what it’sabout, they’re more than wel-come,” Tyrrell said. “Hopefully, they’ll get bit by the bug andcome back next year with ateam.”

yond that figure and collectedmore than $1,700 by the end of thecampaign.
For meeting and exceeding thegoal, two students from each classhad their names drawn from ahat to take the stage in front of their peers and represent theirclass while blanketing a teacherwith bright colors.
Bettner, a Mt. Laurel nativeand current Medford resident,
said he’s known at the school foroften volunteering for fun activi-ties, and so his name was on theshortlist when student councilwas trying to determine whowould be willing to be coated instring.
In the past, Bettner said he’sbeen involved in events such asgetting pied in the face or sittingin a dunk tank, so being coveredin string was just another fun op-portunity to do whatever he couldto help raise money for a good
cause.“I can still have fun with it and
I don’t mind being the butt of jokes,” Bettner said.
Bettner said he didn’t know if students would raise as muchmoney as they did, but they ulti-mately once again surpassed hisexpectations as they do daily dur-ing their normal education.
“It was above and beyond whatI think anybody expected, and notonly that, it’s going to be great
just for the kids to see if we dosomething like this next year,”Bettner said.
This year’s Pennies for Pa-tients campaign was organized byschool nurse Cece Spehalski, whosaid in addition to raising moneyfor a great cause, the event alsohelped honor one of the school’sformer students who was diag-
nosed with leukemia.Although that student has
since moved on to HartfordSchool, Spehalski said he was stillin their hearts, and so the Pen-nies for Patients campaign was away for the school to show thatlove.
“It’s a lot of individual donat-ing,” Spehalski said. “One littlegirl told me she has a piggy bankthat says ‘save, spend and share,’and I thought that was awesome.”
As the assembly coincidedwith the school’s superhero dressup day, before the assemblybegan, Spehalski asked every stu-dent to raise their hand and patthemselves on the back for help-ing make this year’s fundraiser sosuccessful.
“Every single person atSpringville School is a superherofor what you did for leukemia andlymphoma,” Spehalski said.
