A Mt. Laurel CVS was the lat-est victim in a string of bombthreats related to a growing tele-phone scam.

On Aug. 28, the CVS on Route38 was evacuated after an un-known subject called the storeand said bombs had been placedinside the building.

Police officials said the callerasked the manager to load severalGreen Dot MoneyPak debit cardswith $500 each and provide thecard numbers over the phone. The caller threatened to detonatethe bombs if the manager did notcomply.

The store was evacuated andsearched, but no explosives werefound. Mt. Laurel Police later

traced the call to India. The threat was found to be just

another case in a telephone scam.Anonymous callers have beenphoning businesses across thearea with similar threats and de-mands.

Lt. Stephen Riedener from theMt. Laurel Police said they arefully aware of the scam, but didnot encounter a threat until theCVS call.

This is the first actual onewhere the manager was told tofollow their instructions,Riedener said.

The biggest issue has been thebomb threats. While explosiveswere not found at the CVS, andhave not been found in othercases, the police are forced to takethe threats seriously.

    Public safety is always para-

mount, even if we think its ascam to begin with, Riedenersaid.

The scam is not the only oneout there. Riedener said therehave been a lot of different phonescams happening in the past fewmonths. These include callersposing as a government official orPSE&G employee. In these cases, the caller will call a residence andask them to send a Green Dot

MoneyPak card preloaded withmoney. The caller will threaten toshut off the residents electricityor arrest them.

Riedener said police and utilitycompanies will never ask for aGreen Dot MoneyPak card from aresident. To help convey this, thepolice have used social media to

hirteen years have passedsince the Sept. 11, 2001, attackson New York City and Wash-

ington, D.C.Thats hard to believe. Its hard to believe that it was 13

years ago that this country changed

forever. Its hard to believe that it was 13

years ago that so many innocent liveswere lost.

Its hard to believe how much ourlives have changed in those 13 years how heightened security at publicplaces, especially airports, is expectedand openly accepted; how a persons

privacy is not always private; howfarewell and welcome home celebra-tions for servicemen and women seemto be commonplace; and how, sadly, theworld is still dealing with terror.

There are so many other examples

to mention of how our lives havechanged since that fateful day 13 yearsago.

Here we are, more than a decadelater, with 9/11 as a memory for all of us who lived it, and a history lessonfor those who didnt.

Thirteen years later, we should all

be proud of the way we are remember-ing and honoring those who lost theirlives that day as well as their families, and also the servicemen and women and their families who so bravelyhave volunteered to serve this country.

In addition to annual memorials puton at the national level, local commu-nities are playing a large part, too. Ourcommunity, and others around us,host 9/11 remembrances and memori-als.

We should all be proud of ourselves

and our fellow citizens. But we shouldnot stop here just because we havedone well so far.

We should never forget what hap-pened 13 years ago. We should alwayspause and respect those who weretaken from us and those who fight forour freedom.

And we should ensure that those

who werent alive 13 years ago, or weretoo young to remember, are taughtabout what happened that day, andhow it will continue to affect our livesand theirs.

    We will never forget.

    in our opinion

We will never forgetThirtee n years later, we continue to reme m ber those lives lost on 9/11

Mt. Laurel schools have been focusingon their science, technology, engineeringand mathematics program over the pastfew years at the middle school level.

Now, the district is looking to filter moreof this curriculum into its gifted academicprogram for elementary school students.

Sharon Vitella, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, said the dis-trict spent a portion of the summer re-vamping its pre-GAP and GAP curriculumfor first through fourth grades. Not only

did the district want to align the curricu-lum closer to the Common Core standards, but it also wanted to incorporate themesfrom the middle school STEM program.

The new curriculum is technology-based and geared to the 21st century way of thinking, Vitella said.

Students in the program will engage inmore critical thinking and independentstudy exercises. Students in first and sec-ond grade will analyze their talents andlook at how they can impact people in theircommunity.

In third and fourth grades, students willperform a My Place in This World inde-

pendent study where they will participatein projects putting their analysis from firstand second grade into practice.

Vitella said these projects could rangefrom global events to economics. The goalis to teach students how to apply theirknowledge to fix the problems in the world.

We want to focus on their responsibili-ty in the community, Vitella said.

Technology will be a huge part of thenew curriculum. Students will have the op-portunity to communicate with other stu-dents around the world.

agreement. To offset the pay in-crease, the MLEA made conces-sions on health benefits. Theteachers reduced their opt-out al-location and added a voluntaryhealth-care plan. The concessionswill allow the district to stay with-

in the 2 percent tax increase capover the next three years.Members of the school board

said the agreement had a fair rep-resentation of ideas from boththe district and the MLEA.

This is a deal that is fair toboth sides, board member MarcJones said.

MLEA President Doug Bozarthechoed Jones statements aboutthe agreement.

The entire negotiations teamis thrilled with the agreement wewere able to reach with the Boardof Education, Bozarth said in anemail. We feel we achieved a fairsettlement given the current eco-nomic times and restrictionsplaced on such bargaining proce-dures.

Bozarth added it was impor-tant to the MLEA to reach anagreement before classes began. The MLEA approved the agree-

ment during a meeting on Sept. 2,with 436 out of 450 members vot-ing in favor of the new contract.

During a special meeting onSept. 3, the board of educationvoted 8-0 in favor of the contract.Board member Scott Jones wasabsent.

The two sides reached a tenta-tive agreement during the finalweek of August after about eightmonths of negotiations. Blair

said there were a number of dis-agreements over the course of ne-gotiations, but relations betweenthe two sides were never hostile.

All of our meetings were pro-gressive, and even points of dis-agreement were handled withopen discussion and an exchangeof facts, she said.

Superintendent AntoinetteRath said the district has a verysolid relationship with theMLEA, helping to make the nego-

tiations go as smoothly as possi-ble.Not all school districts can say

the same thing, she said. The negotiations team, led by

Len Barker, feels that the negotia-tions process was a productiveone, Bozarth said. The Mt. Lau-rel Education Association contin-ues to have a positive working re-lationship with the Board of Edu-cation.

Vitella said the students willalso do some beginner computercoding to prepare them for mid-dle school. The district added acomputer coding class for alleighth-grade students this year.

The new performance task isgoing to open up a wide range of technology, Vitella said.

The GAP changes will extendto the middle school level, as thedistrict will hold a learning sym-posium in place of the inventionconvention held in previousyears. Vitella said the symposium
