Navy veteran James Durkinstwo years in the service weresome of the best in his life.

Durkin commanded a small, 24-foot boat that transported peopleand goods to and from largerships. He laughed as he told hisfellow veterans some of his fa-vorite stories.

I always love to have fun,Durkin said.

Durkin, a resident at the Mt.Laurel Center for Rehabilitationand Healthcare, got a chance tohave more fun last week on Veter-ans Day. Thanks to a specialluncheon put on for veterans atthe center, Durkin got to hop on apair of motorcycles from NamKnights MC.

The day was special for Durkinand the veterans honored at theMt. Laurel Centers luncheon lastweek. The event included visits

from the centers administrationand members of the WarriorsWatch Riders.

The lunch served as a chancefor the veterans to look back ontheir time in the service. The vet-erans came from differentbranches of the military and allhad their own memories of theirtime serving.

Durkin mainly served on theMediterranean Sea during the

late 1960s. One of his favoritememories was visiting Rome andthe Vatican. He said his time in

the service was his only chance tovisit these locations.

Theres no way I would have

been able to visit, he said.

A member of LA Fitness on Dearborn

Sorry to say this so early, while 60-

degree days were here just a few

days ago, but, alas, the holiday

    season has arrived.

The good news is that means many

    good-hearted people and organizations

will be gathering food, clothing, toys,

money and other items for those less

    fortunate.

At The Sun, we want to help make

your event or drive as successful as

possible. But to do that, we need your

    help.

Many retailers count on Black Fri-

day to help put their business in the

black for the year. If holiday sales are

strong, they have a good overall year. Ifsales are soft, they struggle to get by.

The same theory can hold true for

nonprofits and other groups that de-

pend on the publics generosity duringthe holiday season to see them through

the rest of the year. People, naturally,

are more giving during this time of the

year. So, in the coming weeks, youll

see bell-ringers, donation drives and a

lot of other efforts to help those in

    need.

We salute everyone who holds a

drive to help those in need. But we alsowant to help make those efforts as

    grand and successful as possible.

To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know

what types of items you are trying to

collect, who will benefit from the drive,

and, most importantly, how people can

    get involved to help you.

Email is the best way to send us this

information, and youll find our news

    email address to the right.

Then, after we get your information,

well take it from there. Well get it into

the paper and let everyone in town

know what it is you are trying to ac-

complish and how they can be a part of

    it.

    Many families are still struggling

with the economy. There always arepeople in need. Let us help you to help

them. Send us your event information

and lets make this a big donation year.

    in our opinion

Holiday helpersIts the season to help others; letus know about your fundraiser or drive

    The need is there

The need for donations this holiday periodis strong. Tell us about your fundraisingeffort or donation drive, and well telleveryone else.

    Air Force veteran Solon Shep-

herd fit into the military immedi-ately. He was sent to basic train-ing at an Air Force base in Wichi-

ta Falls, Texas. When he got there,he discovered he had the samelast name as the base.

I got a good ribbing for theguys about that, he said.

Shepherd also got to see a fa-

mous landmark. After training,he was sent to Tokyo as part ofthe American occupation follow-ing World War II.

I was stationed in downtownTokyo, he said. We were locatedright across from the ImperialPalace.

Durkin and Shepherd onlyspent a few years in the military.Durkin joined the Navy just asthe military changed tenuresfrom four years of active serviceand two years of inactive to twoyears active, four inactive.

It was Vietnam, everyone wasbeing drafted, he said. Theyended up having too many people,so they reversed the years.

Not everyone spent a shorttime in the military. Joseph Peter-son made the Navy his career. Hespent more than 20 years in theservice, beginning during WorldWar II.

I had a good life in the Navy,Peterson said.

Peterson talked of how he waswell liked among the personnelhe served with, including his su-perior officers.

They always wanted me tohave meals with them, Petersonsaid. I didnt want to do it be-cause I thought the other guyswould hate me. I got along witheveryone, though.

Maria Gommel, the activity di-rector at the center, puts togetherthe luncheon each year as a wayto honor veterans for their serv-

ice. Gommel understands theircommitment. Her husbandserved five tours in Afghanistanand is also a member of WarriorsWatch Riders. She has made ither mission to honor those whohave served in the armed forces.

This is my passion, she said.Along with fellow Warriors

Watch Rider Todd Price, each vet-eran in attendance received a cer-tificate for his service in the mili-tary.

Gommel said the centers ges-ture is the least it could do toshow its resident veterans its ap-preciation.
