MSOT Awards & New Grads Reception 2008

Highlights & Congratulations A lovely evening was held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on May 15, 2008, to celebrate excellence in occupational therapy and to welcome the 2008 graduates into our profession. The event, a delicious wine and cheese, was very well attended and enjoyed by many student and practicing therapists. Special thanks to Kyla Brignall and Sara-Jane Milne, Awards & Nominations Co-chairs, for their hard work planning this special evening. The event was both tasteful and professional. The new grads were welcomed into the profession with a small gift from MSOT to celebrate their achievement. Additionally, the Department of Occupational Therapy presented the 2008 Fieldwork Educator Roster of Honour to occupational therapists that made outstanding contributions to the students’ education. Please refer to the next page for the list of individuals nominated by the students this year. Throughout the evening, special acknowledgments and awards were presented to very deserving individuals. The MSOT would like to extend their sincerest congratulations to the following award recipients: Meghan Prouse who received the MSOT Research Fund Presentation Award for her project, A Descriptive Analysis of the Accessibility of an Urban Trail, which she will present at the 2008 CAOT conference in Whitehorse. Mr. Alan Judd who received the MSOT Special Recognition Award in sincere appreciation of the continual support and generosity he has shown to the profession of occupational therapy (please see the adjacent Report from MSOT Research Fund for more information on this special acknowledgment). Kara Waller who received the MSOT Award for Professional Excellence in Fieldwork, nominated by fieldwork educators for her exceptional performance in fieldwork. 2008 FIELDWORK EDUCATOR ROSTER OF HONOUR

The Department of Occupational Therapy and the graduating class of 2008 at the University of Manitoba presented “The Fieldwork Educator Roster of Honour” on May 15, 2008 at the MSOT Awards & New Grads Reception. Graduating students had the

opportunity to nominate a fieldwork educator whom they felt had made an outstanding contribution to their education.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients:

David Ambrose, Denyse Blanco, Erica Brown, Gina Devos, Catherine Ellens, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Janelle Hapke, Danielle Harling,

Sharyle Jewett, Jennifer Law, Jane Lawler, Sandy Lopes, Paula Makarenko, Jonie Magat, Kendra McKinnon

Gail McMillan Law, Sara-Jane Milne, Kellie Milloy, Azel Navarro, Diane Nicholson, Isabella Polimeni-Walker, Neala Reid, Sandy Santos, Andrea Wiebe

Report from Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists Research Fund… We are pleased to announce that the recipient of this year’s $500 MSOTRF Presentation Award is Meghan Prouse. Meghan will be presenting her project, A Descriptive Analysis of the Accessibility of an Urban Trail at the 2008 CAOT conference in Whitehorse. Congratulations and good luck Meghan! On behalf of the MSOTRF, I was also pleased to award Mr. Alan Judd with a MSOT Special Recognition Award in appreciation of the continual support and generosity he has shown to the profession of occupational therapy:

Alan Ferrier Judd was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, but grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. He enlisted in the army in 1940 and while in England he renewed his childhood acquaintance with Mary Paterson-Smyth, who was an occupational therapist with the Canadian forces in England. In 1964, he, Mary and their family moved to Winnipeg where Alan became the Director of Administration of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land. At this time, Mary returned to occupational therapy at what was then the Winnipeg Municipal Hospital. Alan Judd gave Mary his complete support, and admiration, throughout her impressive career as an occupational therapist working with persons with dementia, acutely aware of the significance of her work in improving the care for these individuals. Following her death in 1996, Alan wanted to ensure that Mary's contributions to occupational therapy would be remembered, and thus began an annual donation to the Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists Research Fund (MSOTRF). In 1999, MSOTRF reached the minimum amount required to present an annual award and the award was subsequently named in honour of Mary Judd. Since that time, five occupational therapy researchers have been the recipient of $5000 in research funds that have used to further the evidence-based practice of occupational therapy.

Unfortunately, we were unable to award the Mary Judd Research Award this year, as we did not receive any applications. Please consider submitting your research proposal for the November 2008 deadline. You can contact me at [email protected] or 789-3303 if you have any questions about this award or your eligibility. I was pleased to be able to represent MSOT at the Roundtable dialogue on issues in health research sponsored by Research Canada, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the University of Manitoba on January 25, 2008. Research Canada is a national voice for health research advocacy in Canada. Speakers included Deborah Gordon-El-Bihbety, the President and CEO of Research Canada: An Alliance for Health Discovery, Dr. Brian Postl, President and CEO of the WRHA and Dr. Dean Sandham, Chair of the Manitoba Health Research Council.

Spring Fieldwork–Workshop Highlights On March 13th, Margaret Anne Campbell Rempel held the workshop “Introductory Fieldwork for Fieldwork Educators” in the morning and “Feedback and Evaluation” in the afternoon. These workshops, which are typically held in spring and fall, are ideal for those therapists who are new to the fieldwork educator role and/or would like a “refresher course”. On April 25th, Ellen Davis and Lisa Mendez held an interactive workshop on the “2:1 Collaborative Fieldwork Model” at the School of Medical Rehabilitation. This workshop provided an overview of the model (two students paired with one educator), advantages of its use, and tips for applying it in practice. The 10 attendees represented a variety of facilities, practice areas, and level of experience using the collaborative model. Although this model is not a new idea, it is becoming increasingly more common within Manitoba… there are six OTs using it in Intermediate I (May-June) and there are eight collaborative placements in Advanced (summer 2008)! On May 6th, Lisa Mendez presented “Theory 101” to the OT department at Misericordia Health Centre. The Person-Environment-Occupation model and the Occupational Performance Process Model were presented. On May 8th, Ellen Davis facilitated a working group for the OT department at Deer Lodge on “Writing Objectives for Fieldwork”. This working group initiated the task of developing objectives for each level of fieldwork education.

For more information on these or other workshops, please feel free to contact: Ellen Davis (480-1369 [email protected]),

Lisa Mendez (977-5632 [email protected]) or Margaret Anne Campbell Rempel (789-3992 or [email protected])

Update Vol. 13 Issue 3 9 O.T. MONTH – OCTOBER 2008 - continued

Top Ten Things to do for OT Month

10) Decorate hallways, lounges, high traffic areas with buttons, balloons, posters, wellness tips and info about OT. Place flash cards on lunch tables with case studies and OT intervention strategies. 9) Have an OT potluck breakfast. Invite your co-workers to celebrate OT month over a tasty and well balanced breakfast to start the day on the right foot. 8) Use the CAOT theme "Yes I can!", with a positive short message on your voicemail and email messages. 7) Write a short story or email to the local newspaper, television and radio stations. Share a success story highlighting OT’s contribution and the result of an OT intervention. Be attentive to patient confidentiality considerations. 6) Participate in the community by volunteering to speak at health fairs, senior centers or schools. Contact MSOT to help plan and volunteer for events in the community. 5) Have an OT open house or set up a general OT display in a public area at your facility, such as a lobby or cafeteria, highlighting the value of OT’s role in your facility and in other practice areas. Include handouts and a free draw for all those stopping by. 4) Make a contribution to your facility newsletter mentioning OT month, share some wellness tips and/or submit an article about OT. 3) Host formal or informal education session (i.e. a lunch in-service) for co-workers on OT-related topics such as stress management, taking care of your back, or something specifically related to your program. Tip: sharing goodies usually draws larger crowds. 2) Play OT "Name That Device" guessing game, ADL equipment bingo or distribute an OT quiz. The department with the most correct answers wins a prize (perhaps a basket of treats for the winning ward, put together by talented OTs). 1) Give out tea bags to non-OT co-workers, place a large "O" on the tea bag, and invite them to an "O-Tea Party!" Celebrate all the important contributions OTs make to help people live healthier more satisfying lives. The best promotional strategy is simply speaking about the profession of Occupational Therapy to everyone! For more OT Month ideas and resources, check out www.caot.ca and www.otworks.ca All the best!
