P09454: Design & Testing of Centrifugal Pump Components
Design Team:
Rishitha Dias - ISE – Project Manager
Kevin Klucher - ME – Lead Engineer
John Hayles - ME
Reme Meck - ME
Ammar Jangbarwala - ME
Project Background:
Project Family: Sustainable Technologies for the Global Marketplace
Project Track: Flow Visualization
Sponsor: Dresser-Rand Corp.
Faculty Guide: Dr. S. Day
Project Deliverable:
The goal of the project is to design, build, test and deliver to KGCOE, a centrifugal pump system for particle imaging velocimetry studies, which can be used both as a teaching tool for undergraduate students as well as a research tool for graduate and faculty researchers.
Customer Needs:
Existing Pump System:

Impeller and Diffuser Design Examples
Design Concept:
System Architecture:
Risk Item:
Machining acrylic to make impellers is challenging
Complex impeller designs are costly to manufacture
Manufacture impeller blades separately and glue to back-plate
Use Rapid Prototyping for complex geometries
Risk Mitigation:
High Risk: Part Manufacturing
High Risk: Technology
Risk Item:
Impeller/Diffuser Performance will not meet desired levels
GUI I/O control for motor needs to be implemented
Use empirical results to improve component design
Seek assistance from Faculty Consultant
Risk Mitigation:
Overall Progress:Platform: The existing pump system is
functioning at an acceptable level.
Schedule: The Design & Analysis is on schedule. Awaiting customer feedback to finalize.
Budget: $6,500, expected costs are $2,100, not including the machining costs
Performance: Customer needs: On track to meet all customer needs,
except Motor I/O control with GUI Specification: On track to meet all specifications, except
Pump Efficiency levels
