2019 SEASON HONORS

MOUNTAINEER MILESTONES• Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans, who is the most experienced player on the

Mountaineer roster, collected her 1,000th career kill against Baylor on Nov. 26. The Palmdale, California, native picked up her 1,000th kill on her 14th kill of the match and added four more to rank second on the team with 18 swings on Tuesday.

• Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting, a native of Plain City, Ohio, eclipsed her 1,000th career dig at Baylor on Oct. 26 and is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 4.15 digs per set would rank No. 3 all-time by a Mountaineer junior and ninth overall in a single season in program history. She currently has 1,111 digs in her career.

• Junior middle blocker Katie DeMeo notched her 200th career block against Utah Valley at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge, in Honolulu, Hawai’i, on Sept. 14. DeMeo currently boasts 216 total blocks in her career.

• The Mountaineers recorded their 700th win in program history at Delaware on Aug. 30. Fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara also collected his 375th career victory. West Virginia currently holds a 710-759 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974. The 2017 campaign marked the first time in 26 years the Mountaineers made the postseason, with WVU reaching the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Semifinals.

SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKSKansas comes to Morgantown winning two of its last three matches, most recently capturing a five-set win over Iowa State on Nov. 27, held at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, in Lawrence, Kansas. Redshirt senior

outside hitter Ashley Smith had a career-high 20 kills in the win, followed by freshman Morgan Christon with 19. The Jayhawks average 11.5 kills per set and are led by Smith with 2.63 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Langs paces KU’s blocking efforts with 1.13 blocks per set, while senior defensive specialist Allie Nelson leads the floor defense with 3.55 digs per set.

EVANS COMES IN HOTAfter helping WVU claim its first Big 12 Conference win of the season, Evans was named the WVU co-Student-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 14. Evans, an outside hitter, finished the week averaging 3.89 kills per set, ranking fourth in the Big 12. The Palmdale, California, native led West Virginia to a 3-1 victory at Kansas State on Oct. 12, posting a season-high 22 kills for a .375 hitting efficiency. Evans notched her fifth double-digit match of the season and fourth 20-kill performance of her career in the win. She also recorded 13 kills in the five-set loss at Kansas on Oct. 10. Evans finished the week hitting .371 on 82 attempts with 35 kills.

ZERWAS SETTLES IN AS QB1After leading WVU to the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational tournament title, Zerwas was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 23. The Phoenix, Arizona, native quarterbacked the Mountaineer offense to a 3-2 victory over Navy on Sept. 21, dishing out 55 assists to match her career high previously set at San Diego State on Sept. 6. She also registered 11 digs in the win to notch her third double-double of the season. Zerwas also had 30 assists, eight digs and two service aces in the team’s 3-0 win over Duquesne on Sept. 20, followed by 34 assists and five digs in a three-set win against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 21.

JORDAN HAD HERSELF A DAYAfter having a career night in her hometown of San Diego, Jordan was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 9. The middle blocker/outside hitter paced WVU with 30 kills on 57 attacks for a .439 hitting efficiency in the five-set loss at San Diego State on Sept. 6. Despite the loss, Jordan’s 30-kill performance marked the first time a Mountaineer has scored 30 or more kills in a game since Morgan Montgomery posted 31 vs. Marshall on Sept. 15, 2015. Jordan also had eight kills in the 3-0 sweep over Arkansas on Sept. 5 and a team-high 11 kills in the 3-1 setback to Arizona on Sept. 7.

BRI FOR MVPAfter helping WVU claim the 2019 Delaware Classic tournament title to open the season, Lynch was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 3. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native helped WVU post a 3-0 record at the Delaware Classic, earning MVP honors in the process. Lynch posted a career-high 16 kills and hit .394 in a four-set win against host Delaware on Aug. 30. She also had nine kills on 17 attacks for a .412 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over Coppin State and four kills on 13 attacks for a .308

hitting efficiency in a 3-0 sweep over Binghamton. Additonally, Lynch posted five total blocks on the weekend.

LEADING THE PACKSeniors Gabrielle Cuckovich and Erin Slinde, as well as Zerwas, were appointed as this year’s co-captains. Slinde came to West Virginia as a setter in 2016, but is finishing her career in a Mountaineer uniform as a right-side hitter. Looking to fill the role of graduate Natania Levak, Slinde transitioned into the position last spring and has played in 80 sets this season. Zerwas took over as the starting setter midway through her freshman campaign. She now leads the Mountaineer offense with 1062 assists, averaging 10.31 per set to rank fourth in the league. Additionally, Cuckovich played in 84 sets as a junior, finishing with 144 digs to rank fifth on the team.

DEMEO GARNERS ACADEMIC AWARDJunior middle blocker Katie DeMeo was named to the 2019 Academic All-District 2 Volleyball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Nov. 14. The accolade is her second career district award, as she becomes the first WVU volleyball player twice named to the Academic All-District Team. Hannah Shreve was the first to receive the honor in 2016. A native of Troy, Ohio, DeMeo advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America National ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honors will be selected in the coming weeks. DeMeo has played in 65 career matches, boasting 216 total blocks in her career. Last season, DeMeo led the team with 118 total blocks, averaging 1.27 blocks per set to rank fourth in the Big 12 Conference and 39th among all NCAA Division I players.

ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 HONORSTen members were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, announced by the league office on Nov. 21. The 10 honors are a team record and top the previous season-best showing of eight, set in 2018. All but one of the honorees landed on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, also a program-best showing. Of the Mountaineers honored, DeMeo (management) and Zerwas (elementary education) claimed the first-team recognition with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA). The duo was two of eight from the conference to boast a 4.00 GPA. DeMeo was named to the first team for the second time, while Zerwas received her fist career honor.
