2019 SEASON HONORS

MOUNTAINEER MILESTONES• Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans is the most experienced player on the

Mountaineer roster, appearing in her 100th career match at Texas Tech on Sept. 25. Senior defensive specialist Gabrielle Cuckovich also played in her 100th career match at Kansas State on Oct. 12.

• Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting anchors WVU’s floor defense, averaging 4.25 digs per to rank second in the league. Hasting is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 4.25 digs per set would rank No. 3 all-time by a Mountaineer junior and ninth overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 952 digs in her career, 48 shy of 1,000.

• Junior middle blocker Katie DeMeo notched her 200th career block against Utah Valley at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge, in Honolulu, Hawai’i, on Sept. 14. DeMeo currently boasts 203 total blocks in her career.

• The Mountaineers recorded their 700th win in program history at Delaware on Aug. 30. Fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara also collected his 375th career victory. West Virginia currently holds a 708-750 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974. The 2017 campaign marked the first time in 26 years the Mountaineers made the postseason, with WVU reaching the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Semifinals.

WVU’S LAST TIMEOUTThe Mountaineers claimed their first Big 12 Conference win of the season, going 1-1 in Big 12 action last week. West Virginia suffered a five-set loss at Kansas on Thursday before picking up a 3-1 victory at Kansas State on Saturday. The Mountaineers fell to the Jayhawks in set scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 17-25 and 15-13. WVU recorded 61 kills, hitting .178 in the loss, with nine and a half team blocks and 62 digs. Despite Thursday night’s loss, the Mountaineers downed the Wildcats in set scores of 18-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19 two days later. With the win, WVU has picked up a victory over K-State in four of its last five meetings. West Virginia capped the day hitting .291, the eighth time this season the squad has hit .225 or better. The Mountaineers registered 62 kills on 148 attempts with five team blocks and 60 digs.

VICTORIOUS IN NONCONFERENCEThe Mountaineers hold an 8-4 record in nonconference play this season and is 46-24 all-time in non-league matches under coach Reed Sunahara.

SCOUTING THE EAGLESMorehead State sits at 14-4 on theseason, with its only losses comingagainst Winthrop, Kansas, Arizona and Jacksonville State. MSU most recently claimed a four-set victory over Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Oct. 12, at Johnson Arena, in Morehead, Kentucky. Junior outside hitter Olivia Lohmeier leads the Eagles offensively, posting 322 kills in 67 sets to average 4.81 kills per set. Freshman setter Bridget Bessler averages 10.95 assists per set, while sophomore defensive specialist Allison Whitten paces the team with 3.94 digs per set.

ZERWAS SETTLES IN AS QB1After leading WVU to the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational tournament title, sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 23. The Phoenix, Arizona, native quarterbacked the Mountaineer offense to a 3-2 victory over Navy on Sept. 21, dishing out 55 assists to match her career high previously set at San Diego State on Sept. 6. She also registered 11 digs in the win to notch her third double-double of the season. Zerwas also had 30 assists, eight digs and two service aces in the team’s 3-0 win over Duquesne on Sept. 20, followed by 34 assists and five digs in a three-set win against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 21.

JORDAN HAD HERSELF A DAYAfter having a career night in her hometown of San Diego, sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 9. The middle blocker/outside hitter paced WVU with 30 kills on 57 attacks for a .439 hitting efficiency in the five-set loss at San Diego State on Sept. 6. Despite the loss, Jordan’s 30-kill performance marked the first time a Mountaineer has scored 30 or more kills in a game since Morgan Montgomery posted 31 vs. Marshall on Sept. 15, 2015. Jordan also had eight kills in the 3-0 sweep over Arkansas on Sept. 5 and a team-high 11 kills in the 3-1 setback to Arizona on Sept. 7.

BRI FOR MVPAfter helping WVU claim the 2019 Delaware Classic tournament title to open the season, junior middle blocker Briana Lynch was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 3. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native helped WVU post a 3-0 record at the Delaware Classic, earning MVP honors in the process. Lynch posted a career-high 16 kills and hit .394 in a four-set win against host Delaware on Aug. 30. She also had nine kills on 17 attacks for a .412 hitting percentage in a 3-0

win over Coppin State and four kills on 13 attacks for a .308 hitting efficiency in a 3-0 sweep over Binghamton. Additonally, Lynch posted five total blocks on the weekend.

CHALLENGING SLATEWVU will play five matches against opponents who qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, and a pair of contests against teams who received bids to the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), including the NIVC Champion Iowa State. Of note, Baylor and Texas are ranked in the top five of this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, sitting at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively.

LEADING THE PACKSeniors Gabrielle Cuckovich and Erin Slinde, as well as Zerwas, were appointed as this year’s co-captains. Slinde came to West Virginia as a setter in 2016, but is finishing her career in a Mountaineer uniform as a right-side hitter. Looking to fill the role of graduate Natania Levak, Slinde transitioned into the position last spring and has played in 40 sets this season. Zerwas took over as the starting setter midway through her freshman campaign. She now leads the Mountaineer offense with 635 assists, averaging 10.08 per set to rank fourth in the league. Additionally, Cuckovich played in 84 sets as a junior, finishing with 144 digs to rank fifth on the team.

NICE TO MEET YOUFreshman defensive specialist Natalie Winter comes to Morgantown from Katy, Texas, where she played for Amy Cataline at Seven Lakes High and Chuck Schneider at the Houston Juniors Volleyball Club. A 5-foot-9 defensive specialist, she is the program’s career leader in digs (1,531)

and aces (168) and was a three-time first team all-district honoree. Winter led her team to four consecutive regional tournament appearances, including its first-ever Class 6A state final in 2017. Additionally, Winter was a five-time qualifier for the USA Volleyball National Championship as a member of the Houston Juniors Volleyball Club.

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHTAnother trip to the Lonestar State will be televised, as the Mountaineers’ Nov. 3 contest at Texas will broadcast live on ESPNU starting at 1 p.m. ET. The first meeting between the two squads came in August of 2012 and was WVU’s first-ever Big 12 contest. The Longhorns are 14-0 in the series. Of note, WVU dropped a four-set match in its first televised event of the season at Texas Tech on Sept. 25.
