We both came away from it inspired as to the future of education and the possibilities available to educators and students in the future. Speakers such as Larry Rosenstock, the Principal of High Tech High in the US, spoke to us about the reason why schools are divided into periods and subjects and taught to children in age groups. Basically it is a system devised in 1892 to accommodate the likes of Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt to develop a workforce for their production lines. As we all know, these jobs no longer exist! We were also shown the likelihood of other existing jobs not being needed into the future and the list is staggering. What we do know is that our children will be doing jobs that have not yet been invented and to prepare them for that we need to teach them how to learn, unlearn and relearn. Speakers like Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki and Richard Gerver told us about the future that children will grow up in and the way they learn now in the age of Technology. Richard told of his son who he walked in on one evening and he was speaking Russian to someone on his computer. Richard Gerver End of Term 1, 2016 Please note that we finish school at 2.30 on Thursday March 24 th , 2016. Term 2 begins at 9.00am on Tuesday April 12 th . NO SCHOOL MONDAY APRIL 11 TH CURRICULUM DAY ago and they had been conversing ever since, teaching each other language as required! Other speakers told us of the production line that is schooling. From Foundation through to Year 12 we prepare children for that mark that will get them into university. The problem is; university is no longer a guarantee of a job! The overall message was that children learn by doing and more significantly by making and we need, as a system, to change the way we work to accommodate this.
